The decision\u2063 came amidst a competitive mayoral race, with Mayor London Breed facing \u2063challenges. \u200cBreed&#8217;s handling\u2063 of issues like homelessness and crime has led to concerns among voters and businesses in the \u200dcity. The San Francisco advocacy group, \u200dTogetherSF Action, \u200bpulled\u2063 back \u2063a reform proposal to empower the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-last-acceptable-hate-crime\/\" title=\"The Last Acceptable Hate Crime\">future mayor<\/a>, \u200cattributing it to \u2062insufficient backing. \u200bThe move coincided with a tight mayoral race, where Mayor\u200b London Breed encounters obstacles. Concerns over Breed&#8217;s management of homelessness\u2063 and crime \u200chave raised worries among\u200d residents and businesses in San Francisco.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"November ballot\">San Francisco<\/a> political advocacy group that has spent millions to get two reform measures on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"November ballot\">November ballot<\/a> announced this week it was pulling one that would have given the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/london-breed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"next mayo\">next mayor<\/a> more powers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tsfaction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"TogetherSF Action\">TogetherSF Action<\/a> claimed it could not gain traction on an initiative that would have given the mayor the sole authority to appoint and remove members of most of the city\u2019s commissions as well as create deputy mayor positions and delegate responsibilities to them.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>San Francisco Mayor London Breed delivers her State of the City address on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the Pier 27 cruise terminal in San Francisco. (AP Photo\/Eric Risberg)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The group\u2019s founder, <a href=\"https:\/\/togethersf.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Kanishka Cheng\">Kanishka Cheng<\/a>, said it decided to stop collecting signatures due to a \u201clack of clarity in voters\u2019 minds\u201d about who the city\u2019s next\u00a0mayor would be, the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/sf-initiative-pulled-mayoral-power-19433299.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Kanishka Cheng\">  reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0race for mayor has become\u00a0incredibly competitive over the past couple of months, with Mayor London Breed facing stiff opposition. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2868809\/london-breeds-reelection-bid-in-serious-trouble-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"poll\">poll<\/a> commissioned by the Chronicle showed Breed, a Democrat, is at serious risk of losing her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fox-news-gop-calls-on-rep-lee-zeldin-to-challenge-cuomo\/\" title=\"Fox News: GOP Calls On Rep. Lee Zeldin To Challenge Cuomo\">reelection race<\/a>\u00a0and that a majority of San Francisco voters hold a negative view of her.<\/p>\n<p>Breed has failed to gain traction with voters who have complained the city hasn\u2019t rebounded as quickly as others following the pandemic. Others have pointed to\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/san-francisco-office-vacancies-hit-all-time-record-as-businesses-flee-crime-homelessness\/\" title=\"San Francisco office vacancies reach record high due to crime and homelessness, causing businesses to leave.\">persistent homelessness crisis<\/a> and open-air drug use on city streets as to why they favor a leadership change. There has also been an exodus of businesses in San Francisco that claim the city is rife with crime and very little punishment.<\/p>\n<p>Breed has recently pushed a number of tough-on-crime policies. <\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s also demanded accountability for welfare recipients. She ruffled feathers in\u00a0February when she announced midcycle budget cuts as her\u00a0administration gets ready to pass its budget\u00a0in July. That has translated into pausing several programs, including a homeless center in the Tenderloin district, which had been funded in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-bidens-hhs-sec-grins-as-he-refuses-to-say-the-word-mother-instead-of-birthing-people\/\" title=\"WATCH: Biden\u2019s HHS Sec Grins As He Refuses To Say The Word \u2018Mother\u2019 Instead Of \u2018Birthing People\u2019\">previous budget<\/a> but has not yet launched.<\/p>\n<p>Two of her closest opponents, Daniel Lurie, the heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, and former interim Mayor Mark Farrell, a venture capitalist, have blasted Breed for a hollowed-out downtown and deteriorating conditions on the streets. While Laurie and Farrell are considered centrists by San Francisco standards, Breed\u2019s newest opponent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2955622\/aaron-peskin-could-be-london-breeds-biggest-reelection-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Aaron Peskin\">Aaron Peskin<\/a>, is not. <\/p>\n<p>Peskin, the president of the Board of Supervisors, has cast himself as the progressive choice and has slammed centrist groups for being controlled by big-money assets.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Cheng did not specifically say which way voters were swaying, political observers suggested Peskin may have been a motivating factor in dropping the proposal. Peskin has called TogetherSF Action\u2019s\u00a0reform proposals as \u201cno way to do public policy or run a government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they have revealed is that this is an exercise for them to consolidate\u00a0power for their intended candidate,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/05\/01\/san-francisco-together-sf-ballot-measure-mayor-abandoned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"he told \">he told <\/a>the <em>San Francisco Standard.<\/em> \u201cIt is actually quite frightening.
