He was only 33 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Details of the his\u00a0 cause of death were not released, but the discovery of the body was confirmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2024\/05\/04\/nba-los-angeles-lakers-darius-morris-dead-33\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TMZ Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The California native\u2019s family released a statement asking for privacy in the wake of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/42-year-old-former-nba-player-collapses-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sudden death<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith great sadness we announce the passing of our dearly beloved son, Darius Aaron Morris,\u201d the family said in a statement released on Saturday. \u201cDuring this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers posted an image of Morris to social media and noted that the team is \u201cheartbroken\u201d over the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nba-star-caught-camera-viciously-pelting-opposing-fans-playoff-loss-gonna-get-suspended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">player\u2019s<\/a> passing.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We are heartbroken by the passing of Darius Morris \ud83d\udc9c <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jkTs2VrKb6\">pic.twitter.com\/jkTs2VrKb6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lakers\/status\/1786858994059084105?\">May 4, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Morris came to the attention of the sports world with a standout career at the University of Michigan from 2009 to 2011. In his sophomore year he recorded 235 assists, the fourth-highest in school history, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/former-nba-guard-darius-morris-dies-at-33-191442754.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YahooSports<\/a> reported. He was also only the fifth player the school has with more than 200 or more assists in a season.<\/p>\n<p>The player went on to win All-Big Ten third-team honors and was part of the team\u2019s advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2011.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are you a fan of the Lakers?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe was a leader in that program-changing 21-win season (who) laid the foundation for Michigan\u2019s next decade of success,\u201d former Michigan head coach John Beilein wrote about Morris on social media, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/wolverines\/2024\/05\/former-michigan-basketball-star-dies-at-33.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MLive.com<\/a>. \u201cRIP D-Mo and condolences to the Morris family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris was drafted by the L.A. Lakers in the second round in 2011 and played two seasons in L.A. but he ultimately only played for four seasons in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nba-announces-rare-lifetime-ban-player\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the Lakers, Morris went on with brief stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, and the Brooklyn Nets.<\/p>\n<p>The 6-foot-4 Morris averaged 3.3 points and 1.1 assists per game. His best season was with Philadelphia during the 2013-14 season when he scored 6.9 points per game with 2.6 assists, shooting 42 percent on 3-pointers.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the NBA, Morris went on to play in leagues in China, Russia, and France. His last games were in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He also played for the NBA\u2019s G League with the L.A. D-Fenders, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and the Santa Cruz Warriors.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Morris was arrested for domestic abuse for allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nba\/articles\/former_lakers_and_clippers_player_darius_morris_caught_on_video_beating_his_girlfriend\/s1_16751_34567721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beating<\/a> his then-girlfriend Kristen Evangeline. She also released graphic images of bruises she said she suffered at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Evangeline later sued him for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nba-coach-luke-walton-hit-sexual-assault-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sexual assault<\/a> and causing mental distress, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/04\/16\/ex-laker-nets-player-darius-morris-sued-by-woman-for-alleged-assault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> reported in 2021.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
