Gov Brian Benjamin Arrested For Campaign Finance Scheme\">federal bribery charges<\/a> last week, Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/henry-cuellar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Cuellar<\/a> (D-TX) is being called on to step down by a Democrat colleague in the House.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/dean-phillips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dean Phillips<\/a> (D-MN), a former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">long-shot candidate<\/a> for president, lumped Cuellar in with former President Donald Trump and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) as part of a list of politicians who he insisted should resign because they have been indicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the bar for Federal indictment is high, trust in our government is low,\u201d Phillips <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/deanbphillips\/status\/1786544184490381436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a post to X. \u201cThat\u2019s why office holders and candidates under indictment should resign or end their campaigns, including Sen. Bob Menendez, Donald Trump, &#038; Rep. Henry Cuellar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice (DOJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/us-congressman-henry-cuellar-and-his-wife-charged-bribery-unlawful-foreign-influence-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> on Friday that Cuellar, a 10-term congressman, and his wife Imelda were charged with allegedly participating in schemes involving bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>Cuellar, 68, accepted $600,000 in bribes from two foreign entities \u2014 an energy company controlled by Azerbaijan and a bank headquartered in Mexico City \u2014 in exchange for official acts as a member of Congress, the DOJ said.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/05\/03\/henry-cuellar-texas-azerbaijan\/64373556-0966-11ef-b186-090cb777107e_story.html?ref=upstract.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> responding to the indictment, Cuellar said he and his wife were \u201cinnocent of these allegations,\u201d taking a similarly defiant stance as Trump and Menendez have as they seek to fend off the charges they face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything I have done in Congress has been to serve the people of South Texas,\u201d Cuellar said. \u201cBefore I took action, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/henry-cuellar-proclaims-innocence-ahead-of-reported-doj-indictment\/\" title=\"Henry Cuellar asserts innocence prior to alleged DOJ indictment\">proactively sought legal advice<\/a> from the House Ethics Committee, who gave me more than one written opinion, along with an additional opinion from a national law firm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cFurthermore, we requested a meeting with the Washington D.C. prosecutors to explain the facts and they refused to discuss the case with us or hear our side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ said the Cuellars, who face decades in prison if convicted, surrendered to authorities on Friday and made an initial appearance before a federal judge in Houston before each being released on $100,000 bond, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/henry-cuellar-bribery-indictment-investigation-texas-ec9904da5c51d11600718a3261f73d0c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez, who also faces bribery-related charges, has also been pressured to step down by a fellow Democrat \u2014 Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) \u2014 amid his legal battle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Menendez should resign,\u201d Fetterman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fetterman.senate.gov\/press-releases\/fetterman-calls-on-senator-menendez-to-resign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cHe\u2019s entitled to the presumption of innocence under our system, but he is not entitled to continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations.
