The \u200cuniversity faced pro-Palestinian protests, with the ADL monitoring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/orthodox-jews-trending-even-more-toward-republican-party-while-vast-majority-of-american-jews-lean-left-despite-democrat-position-on-anti-semitism-and-israel-poll-shows\/\" title=\"Orthodox Jews Trending Even More Toward Republican Party While Vast Majority Of American Jews Lean Left, Despite Democrat Position On Anti-Semitism And Israel, Poll Shows\">antisemitic incidents<\/a>. Despite efforts to maintain order, the university&#8217;s response to antisemitism falls short. Incidents, primarily by \u200cstudents, include death threats and\u200c assaults. \u200dThe U.S. Department of Education investigates Title VI violations, and students push for divestment from Israel-related companies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 The Anti-Defamation League gives the University of Virginia an \u201cF\u201d in its Campus Antisemitism Report Card as the pro-Palestinian protesters mark another day of demonstrations on campus.<\/p>\n<p>As anti-Zionism demonstrations continue to creep up on college campuses across the nation, the ADL has been active in keeping score of antisemitic incidents prior to the latest campus uprisings, with the goal to serve students and their families information on the \u201ccurrent state of antisemitism on campus\u201d and how those institutions respond.<\/p>\n<p>The ADL said they are currently \u201cassessing the situation on each campus and updating profiles where necessary\u2026As this is a fluid, evolving situation, we are making assessments as needed,\u201d a spokesperson for the ADL told The Center Square.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Virginia has thus far been able to contain the protests, staving off encampments\u2014drawing a line in the sand respecting students\u2019 right to free speech while making it clear the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rutgers-students-face-disenrollment-over-coronavirus-vaccine-mandate-requirements\/\" title=\"Rutgers students risk losing enrollment due to COVID vaccine mandate.\">university stands firm<\/a> on protecting property and maintaining \u201ca safe atmosphere free from disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the university\u2019s firm stance, the school carries a failing grade on how it deals with antisemitism on campus and its response.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that many of the troubling antisemitic incidents have been perpetrated by students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncidents [of antisemitic rhetoric from faculty and staff] were marked as severe and occurred much less frequently than incidents wherein perpetrators were students,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>The ADL reports high incidents of \u201csevere antisemitic and anti-Zionist incidents\u201d on campus, \u201cmany hostile anti-Zionist student government\u201d activities, and the presence of \u201chostile anti-Zionist student groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report details alleged incidents of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nice-speech-mr-president-but-now-is-the-time-for-antiterrorist-action\/\" title=\"Great speech, Mr. President! It's time for action against terrorism.\">antisemitic activities<\/a> on campus, including \u201cone Jewish student said he has received death threats since Oct. 7, was physically assaulted while counterprotesting at an anti-Israel walkout and has been called antisemitic slurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the report states that the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Office for Civil Rights opened \u201ca Title VI investigation against UVA in December 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report also detailed that \u201cUVA students passed a referendum recently calling for divestment from companies that do business with Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ADL also stated that an art history professor canceled her class in an act of solidarity with the \u201cdivestment movement,\u201d prior to the referendum being passed.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the incidents, in December, UVA formed a task force on Religious Diversity and Belonging to assess reports of antisemitic incidents and \u201crecommending educational offerings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ADL said UVA President Jim Ryan has been vocal in his opposition to the divestment resolution, warning that the university \u201cshould not use its investment strategy to take sides on a \u2018complex and deeply contested\u2019 issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report also noted that the university took swift action to update its \u201cpolicies on time, place and manner restrictions\u201d regarding campus protests in response to the \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The ADL also reports that the university has \u201cpartially\u201d fulfilled criteria, including antisemitism in its Code of Conduct and Policies. Despite UVA spending approximately $20 million annually on their diversity, equity and inclusion program staff salaries, the ADL reports the school has only partially fulfilled its criteria for mandatory antisemitic education for students and staff.
