Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 4, 2024 at 7:35am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Some U.S. restaurants have been warning customers of a \u201cnational pickle shortage,\u201d and it turns out that those warnings have some merit.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/cucumber-imports-restaurant-shortage-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox Weather<\/a>, heat and drought across Mexico brought on by the El Ni\u00f1o climate cycle has led to a shortage of pickling cucumbers in the country.<\/p>\n<p>When you consider that the U.S. imports about three-quarters of its fresh cucumbers \u2014 including those used for pickling \u2014 from south of the border, it\u2019s easy to see how problems in Mexico could lead to a shortage in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/webdocs\/outlooks\/109067\/vgs-372.pdf?v=5761.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from the Department of Agriculture, cucumber imports were down 7 percent in January and February.<\/p>\n<p>Fox noted that pickling cucumbers need temperatures in the 70-to-90 degree Fahrenheit range to thrive, but experts say parts of the growing area in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mexico-breaks-diplomatic-ties-ecuador-major-division-forms-central-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico<\/a> have been seeing temperatures of 100 degrees because of El Ni\u00f1o this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere indeed has been a shortage in pickling cucumbers, and it has to do with reduced supply from Mexico,\u201d Jonathan Schultheis, a professor in horticultural science at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/duke-star-brags-painting-nails-nc-state-beats-team-shocking-march-madness-upset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina State University<\/a>, told Fox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn certain growing regions, it has been too hot (100 \u00b0F), which reduces yields,\u201d he explained. \u201cIn other key production regions in Mexico, it has been too cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crop has not suffered from freezes but temperatures that do not promote pickling cucumber growth,\u201d Schultheis added.<\/p>\n<p>Parts of the country have also suffered drought significant enough to lower reservoir levels and prompt the government to enact water-use restrictions in some areas, Fox said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are you a fan of pickles?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Typically, the cucumber crop needs about an inch of water weekly to thrive, most of which comes during the wet summer season. How much of that they\u2019ll receive this year is obviously hard to know this early.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has become increasingly dependent on Mexico for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/usda-wants-information-vegetable-patches-flowerbeds-federal-peoples-garden-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fresh vegetables<\/a> \u2014 including cucumbers \u2014 in recent years, which Fox said is due to a number of issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrade groups have noted that the increase in imports of cucumbers is due to a lack of laborers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jamaica-may-have-a-marijuana-shortage-report-says\/\" title=\"Jamaica May Have A Marijuana Shortage, Report Says\">poor weather<\/a> in the Southeast, and consumers\u2019 taste buds favoring the consistency of Mexico\u2019s products over those produced domestically,\u201d the outlet noted.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the U.S. typically imports more than 750,000 tons of fresh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/veggietales-creator-joins-rob-reiner-create-anti-christian-documentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cucumbers<\/a> from Mexico and consumes 20 billion or more pickles annually, El Ni\u00f1o could be putting a crimp in the dietary habits of many Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from their high salt content, pickles are generally considered a healthy snacking option, according to WedMD, as they contain vitamin K, calcium, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/these-four-common-supplements-could-increase-your-risk-of-cancer\/\" title=\"These Four Common Supplements Could Increase Your Risk of Cancer\">beta-carotene<\/a> and potassium, among other nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether Mexico\u2019s production can turn around and overcome weather extremes remains to be seen, but there are plenty of other countries in the Americas that could aid in the pickle dilemma,\u201d Fox reported.<\/p>\n<p>Which, I suppose, is good news.
