Last year, Best Buy confirmed to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/digital\/news\/best-buy-ending-dvd-blu-ray-disc-sales-1235754919\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a> it would be phasing out the sale of DVD and Blu-Ray discs in early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Just before that, Netflix \u2014 which made its bones shipping DVDs by mail \u2014 ended the physical media side of its own business on Sept. 29, per Variety.<\/p>\n<p>This trend is troubling for consumers who want to maintain control over the content they purchase.<\/p>\n<p>While a purchased physical disc can never be taken away by the original seller, recent years have shown that digital copies of movies and games \u2014 even after purchase \u2014 can be legally removed from customers\u2019 devices.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you prefer physical media?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As reported by the New York Times\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/wirecutter\/blog\/you-dont-own-your-digital-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wirecutter<\/a>, consumers actually don\u2019t \u201cown\u201d the digital files they purchase on online media streaming services like Amazon Prime, Vudu and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/neil-young-comes-crawling-back-spotify-2-years-woke-virtue-signaling-fails-move-needle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you\u2019re purchasing in most cases is a license to watch that video or listen to that song. Effectively that license is good for as long as it really matters,\u201d Wirecutter reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026[I]f Disney, for example, decides it doesn\u2019t want to allow Vudu to sell its movies anymore, the company can have Vudu turn off Disney movies.
