The incident at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, where a bear preyed on\u200b ducklings\u2063 in front of children, highlighted the harsh \u2063but educational \u200caspects of \u200cnature, providing a firsthand lesson on the\u200d circle \u200cof\u200b life \u200cand the realities of wildlife.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>  <\/p>\n<h2>Kids at Zoo Get Firsthand Look at Nature as Mother Duck and Ducklings Land in Enclosure &#8211; Screams Begin as Hungry Bear Appears<\/h2>\n<p> <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/aanton\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/aanton\/%20\"><span>Allison Anton<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 3, 2024 at 11:37am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>In moving from an agrarian to an industrial society, many Americans have lost touch with the harsh realities of the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, many people have pets and visit zoos, but for the most part, ordinary Americans\u2019 understanding of nature has mostly been filtered through cute cartoons and selective footage in movies or nature documentaries.<\/p>\n<p>But at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, a group of children got to witness firsthand how brutal and, indeed, un-cute nature could be.<\/p>\n<p>As seen in a TikTok video captured on April 25 by a mother hosting a birthday party for her daughter, the girl and their guests were watching a female grizzly bear named Juniper swimming around the enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>A mother duck and its ducklings swam across the bear\u2019s path, and the bear saw an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Unperturbed by the presence of an underage audience, Juniper vaulted herself toward the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-adorable-baby-ducklings-ushered-outside-waddling-library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ducklings<\/a>, grabbing one of them and biting off its head.<\/p>\n<p>The children tried banging on the glass to distract the bear, and they screamed and whimpered as Juniper tucked into her feast.<\/p>\n<p>The bear, however, was unbothered.<\/p>\n<p>The mother could be heard to say, \u201cOK, we can\u2019t watch this,\u201d to her child. She then said to the bear, \u201cHey buddy, can you leave them alone? Can we not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though she described the scene as a \u201cnatgeo trainwreck\u201d in her TikTok post, the mother said her children were \u201cnot traumatized\u201d by the incident because \u201cwe see wildlife doing their thing all over where we live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@hppytrees\/video\/7361608121854397742\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mother\u2019s account<\/a> has been made private, the video was widely shared on social media:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Bear was eating those baby ducks like they were popcorn chicken! Kids def scared for life <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bN0nlVpjGI\">pic.twitter.com\/bN0nlVpjGI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 X-Tok (@X_tik_tok) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/X_tik_tok\/status\/1783951443637981648?\">April 26, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/01\/lifestyle\/bear-eats-ducklings-at-the-zoo-in-front-of-horrified-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> noted in their story on the incident that even though the ducklings might have seemed like a minuscule snack for the large brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elderly-man-die-prison-allegedly-killing-grizzly-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bear<\/a>, the animals are omnivorous and will eat almost anything they can get their hands on.<\/p>\n<p>The Woodland Park Zoo sent an email to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuow.org\/stories\/bear-eats-family-ducks-ducklings-seattle-zoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KUOW-FM<\/a> in Seattle seeking to demystify Juniper\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-did-animals-escape-from-a-new-jersey-zoo-when-remnants-of-hurricane-ida-passed-through\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: Did Animals Escape From A New Jersey Zoo When Remnants Of Hurricane Ida Passed Through?\">animal care team<\/a> doesn\u2019t officially document these natural occurrences, this is the season of waterfowl and bird hatchings and, therefore, a vulnerable time of year for ducklings, goslings and other chicks,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoodland Park Zoo is truly an urban oasis and naturally draws native wildlife to our grounds,\u201d the zoo said. \u201cOver the years, our animal care team has tried to discourage waterfowl and other birds from nesting in or near our habitats throughout the zoo, particularly where our carnivores live. However, free-flying ducks and birds can choose where to nest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we know it can be difficult to watch, bears and other carnivores predating on chicks is a natural instinct and is indeed the circle of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Would you move children away from a scene like this?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>As violent as the sight of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mama-duck-watches-intently-as-firefighters-save-her-baby-ducklings-from-storm-drain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cute ducklings<\/a> getting mercilessly gobbled up was, it was but a small glimpse of what regularly happens in nature.<\/p>\n<p>It has always consisted of more than just cute baby animals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-jaguar-v-crocodile-fight-shows-joke-libs-live-harmony-nature-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature<\/a> is a tough creation, nature is resilient and nature is more than capable of taking care of and feeding itself.<\/p>\n<p>Mice and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sheriffs-office-helps-rescue-23-abandoned-rabbits-living-florida-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rabbits<\/a>, for instance, reproduce exponentially since they have hardly any natural defenses.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, predators such as bears not only feed themselves by attacking defenseless ducklings but also help naturally regulate the animal populations in the wild.<\/p>\n<p>It might not have been pretty, but it was the way nature was designed to self-regulate by our all-knowing Creator.<\/p>\n<p>And that was something these children saw firsthand from behind the glass at the zoo.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
