Bryan Chai&#8217;s article delves into the 2023 box office letdowns and the anticipation surrounding the upcoming &#8220;Deadpool &#038; Wolverine&#8221; film produced by Disney.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/entertainment\/\">  Entertainment <\/a>  <\/p>\n<h2>Marvel Head Honcho Exposes Studio&#8217;s Desperation By Sharing What He Told Hugh Jackman Years Ago<\/h2>\n<p> <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/%20\"><span>Bryan Chai<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 3, 2024 at 11:42am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that things aren\u2019t exactly going swimmingly at Disney\u2019s typically-lucrative Marvel Studios division.<\/p>\n<p>A quick glance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/year-flopbuster-2023s-10-biggest-box-office-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 box office receipts<\/a> will confirm as much (or you can just listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disney-exec-blames-massive-box-office-bombs-bigoted-fans-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">screeching Disney execs<\/a>, too).<\/p>\n<p>Given the horrific 2023, as well as the over-saturation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/has-disney-peaked-damning-response-from-fans-tells-all-flashback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general malaise<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/director-matt-vaughn-claims-deadpool-3-will-save-the-whole-marvel-universe-with-a-jolt\/\" title=\"Director Matt Vaughn promises that 'Deadpool 3' will rejuvenate the Marvel Universe with a powerful impact\">superhero film genre<\/a> of late, there\u2019s quite a bit riding on the upcoming \u201cDeadpool &#038; Wolverine\u201d film \u2014 the first R-rated superhero film under Disney\u2019s purview.<\/p>\n<p>(Previous Deadpool movies, as well as the R-rated \u201cLogan,\u201d came under Fox\u2019s banner due to a tangled web of licensing issues.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeadpool &#038; Wolverine\u201d will feature the return of Ryan Reynolds as the foul-mouthed mercenary Deadpool, and that alone has fans of the franchise excited.<\/p>\n<p>But even more exciting than Reynold\u2019s ballyhooed return? Hugh Jackman\u2019s return to don the cowl of the legendary X-Men enforcer, Wolverine.<\/p>\n<p>Jackman last portrayed Wolverine in 2017\u2019s epic \u201cLogan,\u201d a film that gives Jackman\u2019s character a fitting conclusion and send-off.<\/p>\n<p>It was such a perfect end for Wolverine, in fact, that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had previously told Jackman never to return to the iconic role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don\u2019t come back,\u2019\u201d Feige recalled in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/deadpool-wolverine-hugh-jackman-sides-we-havent-seen-before-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Empire<\/a> magazine. \u201c\u2018You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That\u2019s not something we should undo.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are you excited for \u201cDeadpool &#038; Wolverine\u201d?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Spoilers<\/strong>: \u201cLogan\u201d ends with Wolverine (who canonically has always gone by \u201cLogan\u201d as his most oft-used alias) dying to protect a young mutant girl who happens to have similar powers to him.<\/p>\n<p>But apart from the finality of the conclusion, the film also allows the wrathful Wolverine character to atone for much of that rage and death in his past.<\/p>\n<p>To Feige\u2019s credit, the beleaguered Marvel Studios president was 100 percent correct that Jackman\u2019s run as Wolverine truly should have ended in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>So then why is Jackman returning to the role over seven years later?<\/p>\n<p>The Empire piece tries to frame this as a role that Jackman truly wanted to return to, and there\u2019s no reason to doubt that.<\/p>\n<p>But it takes two to tango, and Marvel obviously had to sign off on bringing back a character that had such a noble sendoff in \u201cLogan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To that end, it\u2019s pretty clear what Feige is admitting: He\u2019s out of ideas, and he desperately needs a box office win after the likes of 2023 duds such as \u201cThe Marvels\u201d and \u201cAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marvel Studios isn\u2019t just dipping back into a well-used well, but it\u2019s doing so at the cost of re-writing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jordan-peeles-new-film-nope-debuts-at-no-1-with-44-million\/\" title=\"Jordan Peele\u2019s New Film \"Nope\" Debuts At No. 1 With  Million\">incredible film<\/a> in its own right.
