Ali,\u2064 received a &#8220;Justice Tribute&#8221; award from an Arab-American civil rights group linked to anti-Israel sentiments. The group supports BDS,\u2062 with a board member praising \u200bHamas.\u200d Ali&#8217;s affiliation raises concerns, as he has ties to organizations calling to \u200bdefund the police. \u200cSimilar ties have affected other nominees&#8217; confirmations. Ali in November received a &#8220;Justice Tribute&#8221; award from an Arab-American civil rights group that supports the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, and whose board member has praised Hamas and other terrorist groups.<\/p>\n<p>The Arab American Civil Rights League, based in Dearborn, Michigan, has called for boycotts of the state\u2019s two Democratic senators over their opposition to the BDS movement. One of the league\u2019s board members said the Arab-American community &#8220;stand[s] with&#8221; Hamas and Hezbollah against Israel. And days after Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 attack on the Jewish state, the Arab American Civil Rights League <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.law360news.com\/1733000\/1733138\/acrl%20v%20us%20secretary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> the State and Defense Departments for failing to evacuate Palestinian-Americans in Gaza. The lawsuit made no mention of Americans held hostage by Hamas in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks after the lawsuit, Arab American Civil Rights League president Nabih Ayad presented Ali, the nominee for the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., with its &#8220;Justice Tribute&#8221; award for his work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-announces-new-legal-team-for-impeachment-defense-after-previous-team-collapsed\/\" title=\"Trump Announces New Legal Team For Impeachment Defense After Previous Team Collapsed\">civil rights litigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ali\u2019s affiliation with the anti-Israel group comes amid <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/biden-judicial-nominee-leads-left-wing-group-that-wants-to-defund-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrutiny<\/a> over his role at a nonprofit, the MacArthur Justice Center, that has called to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-trump-headlines-save-america-rally-in-sarasota-fla\/\" title=\"President Trump headlines Save America rally in Sarasota, Fla.\">defund police departments<\/a>. Ali, who started at the MacArthur center in 2017 and became its director in 2021, testified at his confirmation hearing that he was unaware his group had called to defund police departments. Ali said he does not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-on-if-some-dems-support-defunding-police-do-some-in-gop-think-were-sucking-blood-out-of-kids\/\" title=\"Biden On If Some Dems Support Defunding Police: Do Some In GOP \u2018Think We\u2019re Sucking Blood Out Of Kids?\u2019\">support defunding police<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Links to anti-Israel groups have jeopardized other Biden nominees. The confirmation of Adeel Mangi to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals is in limbo over his position on the advisory board of the Rutgers Center on Security, Race, and Rights, a think tank that has pushed anti-Israel views and hosted a convicted terrorism financier at a 9\/11 anniversary event in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Ali disclosed his award from the Arab American Civil Rights League in his questionnaire to the Senate Judiciary Committee, but referred to the organization only by its acronym, ACRL.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the then-chairman of the organization called for a boycott of Democratic Michigan Sens. Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow over their support for a bill against the BDS movement. &#8220;We should not invite them to our dinners, we should not welcome them into our community and we should not give them a dime and find other candidates,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/arabamericannews.com\/2019\/02\/08\/civil-rights-group-calls-for-boycott-of-stabenow-peters-after-their-yes-votes-on-anti-bds-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Nasser Beydoun, who now serves on the Arab American Civil Rights League\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>Beydoun made those remarks in an interview with Arab American Civil Rights League board member Amer Zahr and <em>Arab American News<\/em> publisher Osama Siblani. Both are ardent critics of Israel and defenders of Hamas. Zahr has said &#8220;we stand with&#8221; any organization that fights against Israel, &#8220;whether it\u2019s called Hamas; whether it\u2019s called Hezbollah,&#8221; the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/michigans-top-dems-say-they-support-israel-theyve-courted-a-hamas-loving-anti-israel-activist-for-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Siblani has called Hamas and Hezbollah &#8220;freedom fighters.&#8221; At a rally in May 2022 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gina-carano-to-sit-down-with-ben-shapiro-in-first-interview-since-being-canceled-by-hollywood\/\" title=\"Gina Carano To Sit Down With Ben Shapiro In First Interview Since Being \u2018Canceled\u2019 By Hollywood\">received national attention<\/a>, Siblani <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/meet-rashida-tlaibs-favorite-anti-israel-publisher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a> the &#8220;<em>fedayeen<\/em>,&#8221; or Islamic militants, and urged Arabs to take up &#8220;stones&#8221; and &#8220;guns&#8221; against Israel. At an Arab American Civil Rights League <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_QIsy45JdTk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gala<\/a> weeks earlier, Siblani said the United States should provide Palestinians with &#8220;economic and military aid to fight Israelis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zahr and Siblani attended the &#8220;Justice Tribute&#8221; ceremony for Ali, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dearborn.org\/preview\/photos-the-acrl-detroit-branch-naacp-6th-annual-justice-awards-tribute-42745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photos<\/a> of the event. It is unclear whether Ali knows either activist.\u00a0He referred the <i>Free Beacon<\/i> to the White House for comment. White House spokesman Andrew Bates defended Ali as an &#8220;extraordinarily qualified&#8221; nominee who has &#8220;strong law enforcement and Jewish community support.&#8221; Bates baselessly accused the <em>Free Beacon<\/em> of &#8220;targeting \u2026 Muslim nominees&#8221; with &#8220;guilt-by-association smears.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ali disavowed Hamas in written responses to the Senate Judiciary Committee. He said that he would disqualify potential law clerks who praise Hamas, as well as those who blame Israel for the Hamas attack.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will expect my law clerks to have sound judgment, and the endorsement or praise for a Foreign Terrorist Organization would be disqualifying,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/2024-02-08_-_qfr_responses_-_ali.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.\t<\/p>\n<p>But Ali has links to another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/antifa-blm-vandalize-ice-building-burn-original-starbucks\/\" title=\"Antifa, BLM vandalize ICE building, burn original Starbucks\">left-wing group<\/a> that has explicitly blamed Israel for the Hamas attack, and defended the &#8220;Palestinian right&#8221; to &#8220;armed struggle&#8221; against Israel. Ali is a member of the National Police Accountability Project, a subsidiary of the radical left-wing National Lawyers Guild.<\/p>\n<p>The National Lawyers Guild <a href=\"https:\/\/nlginternational.org\/2023\/10\/nlg-international-emphasizes-palestinian-right-to-resist-stands-in-solidarity-with-palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defended<\/a> Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 attack on the grounds that Palestinians have a right to use &#8220;armed struggle&#8221; against Israel.
