The DOJ objected to the law, stating it oversteps federal boundaries.\u200c Iowa&#8217;s Attorney\u2063 General resisted, prioritizing state\u2064 safety \u200camidst border security worries.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration\u2019s Department of Justice (DOJ) warned Iowa that it will sue the state if it enforces a recently passed law that seeks to crack down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/illegal-immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal immigration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ\u2019s warning comes after Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2024\/04\/10\/reynolds-signs-law-letting-iowa-police-arrest-undocumented-immigrants-texas-illegal-reentry\/73279222007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed legislation<\/a> last month that would make illegal reentry into the state an aggravated misdemeanor, empowering the state to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-gov-greg-abbott-says-state-will-build-its-own-border-barriers-if-biden-wont-address-immigration-crisis\/\" title=\"Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Says State Will Build Its Own Border Barriers If Biden Won\u2019t Address Immigration Crisis\">arrest illegal immigrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden administration has failed to enforce our nation\u2019s immigration laws, putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk,\u201d Reynolds said after first signing the legislation. \u201cThose who come into our country illegally have broken the law, yet Biden refuses to deport them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden DOJ\u2019s Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Boynton responded to the legislation with a letter to Governor Kim Reynolds and Attorney General Brenna Bird, giving the state until May 7 to suspend the enforcement of the new law before the federal government steps in. Boynton argued that Iowa\u2019s new law \u201cis preempted by federal law and violates the United States Constitution\u201d and that it \u201ceffectively creates a separate state immigration scheme,\u201d which \u201cintrudes into a field that is occupied by the federal government and is preempted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s Attorney General Brenna Bird signaled that Iowa will not capitulate to the Biden administration\u2019s request. \u201cIowa will not back down and stand by as our state\u2019s safety hangs in the balance. If Biden refuses to stop the border invasion and keep our communities safe, Iowa will do the job for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Governor Reynolds asserted that the law is only necessary because of the Biden administration\u2019s unwillingness to secure the southern border. \u201cThe only reason we had to pass this law is because the Biden administration refuses to enforce the laws already on the books,\u201d Reynolds contended. \u201cI have a duty to protect the citizens of Iowa.
