Krasner&#8217;s reforms,\u2064 including cashless bail and reduced sentences, were under scrutiny.\u2064 The GOP emphasized the need for \u2064tougher\u200d prosecution to curb crime waves.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania \u2014 <\/strong>House Republicans highlighted the deaths of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kazakhstan-chaos-reports-of-riots-beheadings-as-russia-sends-troops\/\" title=\"Kazakhstan Chaos: Reports of Riots, Beheadings as Russia Sends Troops\">slain police officers<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/philadelphia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Philadelphia<\/a> field hearing that laid blame at the feet of District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/2923408\/phillys-soros-funded-district-attorney-deceived-court-to-get-murderer-off-death-row\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Larry Krasner<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-judiciary-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Judiciary Committee<\/a> met in the city on Friday for its fourth hearing focused on urban crime, receiving testimony from family members of those officers who accused Krasner of giving criminals a \u201cfree pass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Krasner, elected to a second term in 2021, is one of several district attorneys who have pursued criminal justice reforms that Republicans say have led to a nationwide spike in crime. He has advocated cashless bail and reduced sentences for nonviolent offenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you don\u2019t prosecute bad guys, you shouldn\u2019t be surprised that you get more crime. When you defund the police, you shouldn\u2019t be surprised when you get more crime,\u201d Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) said in his opening remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats on the committee panned the hearing as an attempt to politicize the crime wave, which peaked during the pandemic and has since declined. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), the ranking Democrat, denounced what he called \u201cpure political theater designed to create a forced narrative\u201d about his party ahead of the November elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, its members largely sidestepped Krasner altogether, striking a sympathetic tone toward the victims testifying on Friday while emphasizing the need for legislative solutions to violent crime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/south-dakota-republicans-stand-strong-at-their-convention\/\" title=\"South Dakota Republicans Stand Strong at Their Convention\">including red flag laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats invited two witnesses with expertise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-judiciary-chairman-says-gun-control-is-top-priority\/\" title=\"Senate Judiciary Chairman Says Gun Control Is \u2018Top Priority\u2019\">gun violence prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Terri O\u2019Connor, the widow of a slain Philadelphia police officer, was among the GOP witnesses. She led off the testimony recounting the story of her husband\u2019s death while serving a murder warrant in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans also invited the parents of Sgt. Christopher Fitzgerald, another officer killed in the line of duty. Each blamed Krasner for policies they said had enabled criminals at the expense of public safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/radical-cultural-change-coming-to-america\/\" title=\"Radical Cultural Change Coming to America?\">district attorney<\/a>, prosecutors, and judges did their jobs, maybe he\u2019d still be here today,\u201d O\u2019Connor said of her husband, holding back tears as she concluded her testimony.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) accused the committee of \u201ctrading on the pain of other people\u201d with the invitations but was forced to clarify a statement she made moments earlier that Jordan had \u201cbrought his traveling circus to town\u201d with the hearing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aren\u2019t circus animals,\u201d Joel Fitzgerald, the father of Christopher, retorted when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) asked about the remark. \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t be used as circus animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scanlon responded that she was referring to the \u201cactions of our colleagues,\u201d not the witnesses, \u201cwhose pain is very real.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Joel Fitzgerald, the father of slain police Sgt. (David Sivak\/Washington Examiner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In another moment of controversy, Nadler, one of the longest-serving Jewish members of the House, accused Gaetz of antisemitism when he entered into the record an article tying Democratic megadonor George Soros to the election of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eric-adams-shows-yet-again-that-progressives-dominate-the-dialogue-only-to-lose-elections\/\" title=\"Eric Adams Shows Yet Again That Progressives Dominate The Dialogue, Only To Lose Elections\">progressive district attorneys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Krasner did not appear at the hearing on Friday. Jordan confirmed to the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>that he had not been invited, though he added he \u201cwouldn\u2019t mind\u201d cross-examining him after Krasner said this week he was open to appearing.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Krasner\u2019s policies were central to the hearing as Republicans focused on everything from violent crime to retail theft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want less crime. House Republicans held a field hearing last year in New York City centered on another district attorney, Alvin Bragg. Bragg is prosecuting former President Donald Trump on alleged business fraud charges.<\/p>\n<p>Krasner has faced controversy for his policies. The Pennsylvania House impeached him in 2022, in part for his refusal to enforce certain minor crimes. House Republicans invited the special prosecutor for that impeachment to testify on Friday as well.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Krasner <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crime-pennsylvania-philadelphia-impeachments-government-and-politics-ecf663668f12422de42ba5cb5eaaeed7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>dismissed<\/a> the body for not \u201cpresenting a single shred of evidence connecting our policies to any uptick in crime,\u201d while the Senate indefinitely postponed his trial amid a court battle. He was overwhelmingly elected to a second term a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Judiciary Democrats noted that crime has fallen since the pandemic, with a 35% drop in homicides so far this year compared to the same time period in 2023.
