(AP Photo\/Eric Risberg)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The program is slated to cost more than $6 million over a five-year pilot period, with money also coming in from anonymous donors. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt All Adds Up\u201d will give 450 families that have recently experienced homelessness a monthly stipend. Half of the group will get $1,000 a month, with no strings attached, for five years. The other half, the control group, will get $50. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCash is just one of many vital supports Bay Area families need to break the cycle of homelessness for good,\u201d the \u201cIt All Adds Up\u201d website reads. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile research has already proven GBI (Guaranteed Basic Income) effective in improving individuals\u2019 health, financial, and employment outcomes, \u2018It All Adds Up\u2019 is a first-of-its-kind effort to determine the impact of direct cash payments on families\u2019 long-term housing stability,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italladdsupsf.org\/the-pilot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"it adds\">it adds<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oakland-to-enroll-600-families-of-color-in-guranteed-income-pilot-program\/\" title=\"Oakland to Enroll 600 Families of Color in \u2018Guranteed Income\u2019 Pilot Program\">guaranteed income programs<\/a> have been around for centuries, the concept has once again started to gain traction with policymakers who see it as a tool to help combat homelessness and promote affordable housing. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/17\/openais-altman-ai-will-make-wealth-to-pay-all-adults-13500-a-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"OpenAI founder Sam Altman\">OpenAI founder Sam Altman<\/a> is also funding a pilot to study the practice of guaranteed basic income. He predicted three years ago that AI could one day create enough money to pay every adult in the United States $13,500 per year. <\/p>\n<p>San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle, as well as Portland, Oregon, and Oakland, California, are among the West Coast cities that have been hammered with a spike in homelessness over the past several years. More people have been taking to the streets after being pushed out of their homes due to sky-high rents and wealth disparities.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco has experienced a surge in family homelessness in recent months, with 427 families waiting in line for shelter as of April 17. A wait list for individual shelter beds had 172 people on it this\u00a0week. The city pledged in 2017 to eliminate homelessness among families, but the problem has only grown. New migrant families have also become vulnerable to homelessness in San Francisco.\u00a0Mental health and addiction have also affected the rise in homelessness. <\/p>\n<p>San Francisco, along with Oakland and Santa Clara County, have all launched pilot basic income programs over the past few years, but \u201cIt Adds Up\u201d will be the first to focus on families on the edge of homelessness. <\/p>\n<p>Compass Family Services and Hamilton Families are in charge of running the new program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know it works,\u201d Hamilton Families CEO Kyriell Noon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/sf-google-guaranteed-income-19431969.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told \">told <\/a>the <em>San\u00a0Francisco Chronicle<\/em>. \u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is gather enough compelling data to take to City Hall, Sacramento, (the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development) and change policy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER \">CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/nlihc.org\/oor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"report \">report <\/a>from the National Low Income Housing Coalition found that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/Looking-to-rent-a-2-bedroom-in-S-F-Better-make-16312902.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>took more than four minimum wage jobs<\/a> for a household to afford a two-bedroom apartment in the San Francisco area comfortably.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that we live in a place where there\u2019s so much wealth and resources,\u201d Noon said, \u201cand yet there are families choosing between eating and paying rent.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Francisco&#8217;s recently homeless families receive $1,000 monthly through a program partly funded by Google&#8217;s nonprofit.
