An FBI raid in September on the couple\u2019s $1.2 million house <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/4218060-fbi-found-gold-bars-in-menendezs-house-money-stuffed-in-jackets-prosecutors-say\/\">found<\/a> $480,000 in cash\u2014&#8221;much of it stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets, and a safe&#8221;\u2014along with gold bars worth around $100,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Senator Menendez suffered intergenerational trauma stemming from his family\u2019s experience as refugees, who had their funds confiscated by the Cuban government and were left with only a small amount of cash that they had stashed away in their home,&#8221; the filing read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lawyers also said Menendez &#8220;experienced trauma when his father, a compulsive gambler, died by suicide after Senator Menendez eventually decided to discontinue paying off his father\u2019s gambling debts.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Menendez has asked the court to bring in a psychologist to verify his claims. Federal prosecutors, however, opposed the request and accused him of trying to bias the jury by &#8220;engender[ing] sympathy based on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kids-are-resilient-and-kids-will-recover-natl-teachers-union-president-dismisses-effects-of-school-lockdowns\/\" title=\"\u2018Kids Are Resilient And Kids Will Recover\u2019: Nat\u2019l Teachers\u2019 Union President Dismisses Effects Of School Lockdowns\">family background<\/a>, in the guise of expert testimony.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The embattled Democrat has been indicted four times by federal authorities on bribery and corruption charges but has denied any wrongdoing and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/bob-menendez-tells-dem-colleagues-he-wont-resign\/\"><span>dismissed<\/span><\/a><span>  bipartisan calls for him to resign from the Senate.<\/span>\t<\/p>\n<p><span>A court filing in April showed Menendez may be poised to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/bob-menendez-poised-to-blame-wife-in-bribery-case\/\"><span>blame<\/span><\/a><span>  his wife for involving him in the scandal. The senator\u2019s attorneys intend to demonstrate the &#8220;absence of any improper intent on Senator Menendez\u2019s part&#8221; by showing that his wife &#8220;withheld information from Sen. Menendez or otherwise led him to believe that nothing unlawful was taking place.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The senator\u2019s trial is scheduled to begin on May 13 in Manhattan.
