Brian Kemp signed a series of public safety bills on Wednesday, including a measure to require Georgia counties to comply with federal immigration laws.<\/p>\n<p>Kemp, a Republican, signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/63873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Senate Bill 63<\/strong><\/a>, which expands the list of \u201cserious offenses\u201d for which bail is required, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/66477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SB 421<\/strong><\/a>, which stiffens the penalties for \u201cswatting\u201d and drive-by shootings. The move to tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/georgia\/article_3e92a5d8-d801-11ee-9f99-c3f279b96cb3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>swatting<\/strong><\/a> follows several instances involving Georgia officials around the Christmas holiday, following a national trend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorgia families are always top of my mind,\u201d Lt. Governor Burt Jones, a Republican, said in a statement. \u201cThe passage of these bills helps enable law enforcement to do their jobs and allows offenders to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We will not allow criminals to roam free in our streets. These bills continue our efforts to keep Georgians safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the ACLU of Georgia took umbrage, saying the measure \u201cis cruel, costly, and counterproductive\u201d and promised a legal challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch shows that sweeping people into incarceration only increases crime and taxpayer costs, and yet Georgia locks up a higher percentage of its people than any other state in the country,\u201d the group said in a statement. \u201cSB 63 doubles down on that position, forcing even more people to languish in jail because they are poor or mentally ill. We are very disappointed that Gov. Kemp has sacrificed the good of Georgia for political gain. The ACLU of Georgia will challenge SB 63 in the courts to stop it from going into effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/calif-gov-slammed-for-bill-signing-ceremony-in-deli\/\" title=\"Calif. Gov. slammed for bill signing ceremony in deli\">bill signing ceremony<\/a> at the Georgia Public Training Center in Forsyth, Kemp also signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/66568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>House Bill 1105<\/strong><\/a>, the Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act of 2024, which aims to force local jurisdictions to comply with federal immigration laws. The push took renewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/georgia\/article_c5175d76-d4da-11ee-bbd5-bfb66fa5babf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>urgency<\/strong><\/a> following the February slaying of a college student in Athens, allegedly at the hands of someone who entered the country illegally.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute said it is \u201cdisappointed\u201d by the bill\u2019s signing, saying it \u201cis a state mandate without any supportive funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on\u202fprior data, it is expensive and strips scarce resources from local governments, replacing local discretion with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doug-burgum-wants-to-move-past-celebrity-president-idea-and-focus-gop-on-economy\/\" title=\"Doug Burgum aims to shift GOP's focus from the \"celebrity president idea\" to the economy.\">state-level decision-making<\/a> to the detriment of local communities,\u201d David Schaefer, GBPI\u2019s vice president of research and policy, said in a statement. \u201cHB 1105 will likely expand the state\u2019s system of\u202fcarceral control\u202fand\u202fcaging of people of color while perpetuating the separation of immigrant families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor also signed several other bills, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/63580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SB 10<\/strong><\/a>, the \u201cSafe Streets Act.\u201d It creates an offense for knowingly facilitating or attending illegal drag races or exhibitions of \u201claying drag;\u201d it also increases the penalty for reckless stunt driving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorgians have witnessed the disastrous impact lawlessness is having on communities across the country,\u201d Kemp said in a statement. \u201cThanks to the work of our legislative partners in the General Assembly, we are able to once again send the message that such lawlessness will find no safe haven in Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed public safety bills, including SB 63 and SB 421.
