Institutions like Columbia, \u200cVirginia Tech, Northeastern, and others faced challenges when protesters occupied spaces, leading to arrests and confrontations. Despite the varied responses, universities aim to balance free speech\u2064 with safety and adherence to policies. Each institution&#8217;s approach reflects its commitment to managing protests effectively.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/campus-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>College campuses<\/a> across the United States have seen massive upheaval due to pro-Palestinian protests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/columbia-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Columbia University<\/a>, the school with likely the most high-profile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>protest<\/a> encampment, was forced to navigate difficult circumstances with the nation watching. The school has been criticized by people on both sides of the issue, and many other colleges now share the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>Some have cracked down on protesters, some compromised, and others have not acted very harshly in either direction.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> decided to categorize those colleges\u2019 choices.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Swift and successful<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h5><strong>Arizona State University \u2014<\/strong> Mass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/phoenix\/2024\/04\/29\/palestinian-protests-arizona-state-university-arrests\">arrests<\/a>; encampments not allowed<\/h5>\n<p>Arizona State saw police arrest at least 72 people, with only 15 students included, and students in fraternities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article\/jewish-asu-frat-boys-speak-viral-video-shows-helping-cops-throw-away-gaza-glampers-tents-exclusive-interview\/25353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>helped<\/a> police tear down encampments.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile the university will continue to be an environment that embraces freedom of speech, ASU\u2019s first priority is to create a safe and secure environment that supports teaching and learning,\u201d ASU officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona-education\/2024\/04\/30\/pro-palestinian-protests-spread-across-arizonas-college-campuses\/73514748007\/\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of Texas at Austin \u2014<\/strong> Mass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/2024\/04\/30\/south-mall-ut-austin-campus-protest-pro-palestine-encampment-live-updates\/73506684007\/\">arrests<\/a>; weapons confiscated<\/h5>\n<p>79 people were arrested at UT at Austin, and the college said protesters had weapons like \u201cguns, buckets of large rocks, bricks, steel-enforced wood planks, mallets, and chains\u201d in their possession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Texas learned Tuesday that, of the 79 people arrested on our campus Monday, 45 had no affiliation with UT Austin,\u201d the school said in a statement. \u201cThese numbers validate our concern that much of the disruption on campus over the past week has been orchestrated by people from outside the University, including groups with ties to escalating protests at other universities around the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Ohio State University<\/strong> <strong>\u2014<\/strong> Continued protests after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/education\/2024\/05\/01\/ohio-state-university-sees-israel-hamas-war-protests-over-palestine\/73524708007\/\">police<\/a> denied encampment<\/h5>\n<p>University police officers stifled attempts to create an encampment at Ohio State because tent camping was not allowed in a section of the campus. Another protest is scheduled for Wednesday night in the same area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a public university, demonstrations, protests and disagreement regularly occur on our campus \u2014 so much so that we have trained staff and public safety professionals on-site for student demonstrations for safety and to support everyone\u2019s right to engage in these activities,\u201d Ohio State President Ted Carter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/education\/2024\/04\/29\/ohio-state-protests-president-campus-will-not-be-overtaken\/73502582007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said.<\/a> \u201cSadly, in recent days, I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-guide-to-university-statements-on-anti-israel-campus-protests\/\" title=\"University Guidelines for Addressing Anti-Israel Demonstrations\">watched significant safety issues<\/a> be created by encampments on other campuses across our nation. These situations have caused in-person learning and commencement ceremonies to be canceled. Ohio State\u2019s campus will not be overtaken in this manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of Georgia \u2014<\/strong>  16 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redandblack.com\/uganews\/16-arrested-on-uga-campus-during-pro-palestine-encampment-demonstration\/article_5340fa6c-062c-11ef-9eb1-9b6a8157b2a6.html\">arrested<\/a> after short-lived encampment<\/h5>\n<p>A Georgia encampment only lasted an hour and a half before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/capitol-police-arrest-demonstrators-overcrowding-area-as-supreme-court-hears-miss-abortion-case\/\" title=\"Capitol Police arrest demonstrators overcrowding area as Supreme Court hears Miss. abortion case\">police arrested demonstrators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us make it abundantly clear that while the University of Georgia staunchly supports freedom of expression, we will not cede control of our campus to groups that refuse to abide by University policy and threaten the safety of those who live, work and study here,\u201d Georgia\u2019s administration said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/nowhabersham.com\/uga-releases-statement-regarding-arrests-at-campus-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>. \u201cThe University of Georgia remains an institution where ideas, viewpoints, and scholarship can be openly expressed and debated.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Virginia Commonwealth University \u2014<\/strong> 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/local-news\/richmond\/faculty-and-staff-condemn-vcus-decision-to-deploy-police-on-pro-palestinian-protest-on-campus\/\">people<\/a> arrested<\/h5>\n<p>Police clashed with protesters in an encampment that didn\u2019t last a full day before officials took down structures that violated school policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile our community cherishes the right to peaceful protest, setting up structures on our campus lawn violated our policy,\u201d VCU President Michael Rao <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vcu.edu\/article\/2024\/04\/a-message-from-president-rao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said.<\/a> \u201cOur staff respectfully and repeatedly asked individuals to comply. As has happened on other campuses around the country, conflict between police and protesters took place.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Arrests after escalation <\/strong><\/h2>\n<h5><strong>Virginia Tech University \u2014<\/strong> 82 protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vt.edu\/articles\/2024\/04\/president-letter-april29.html\">arrested<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>After protesters occupied the Graduate Life Center lawn for three days, police arrested 82 demonstrators for trespassing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night, 82 protesters (largely students) were arrested for trespassing after occupying the Graduate Life Center lawn for three days and repeatedly refusing to comply with university policy and public safety regulations,\u201d VT President Tim Sands said. \u201cWhile I am grateful the incident was resolved peacefully by Virginia Tech Police, I was saddened by the way our officers were treated. I am also deeply disappointed to see members of our community choose uncivil and unlawful behavior over purposeful engagement in difficult conversations and robust debate that should be part of the Virginia Tech experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Northeastern University \u2014<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/northeastern-protests-arrests-mit-tufts-harvard-campus\/\">Nearly<\/a> 100 protesters arrested<\/h5>\n<p>A combination of factors led Northeastern to clear out a several-day-old encampment and arrest nearly 100 demonstrators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to note that all protesters were provided with several advance notices that the encampment would be dismantled,\u201d\u00a0Northeastern Chancellor Ken Henderson and Provost David Madigan <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/moving-forward-together\/\">said.<\/a> \u201cProtesters were offered several opportunities to leave the area and face no legal consequences. Many people took advantage of those opportunities. Those who refused to leave were detained by police.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of Wisconsin-Madison \u2014<\/strong> Violent confrontation with protesters, tents taken down and put back up<\/h5>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">An update on the UW encampment demonstration. Library Mall is peaceful <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iz1dFngsvo\">pic.twitter.com\/iz1dFngsvo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cat Carroll (@cgcarroll23) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cgcarroll23\/status\/1785776835147530241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Wisconsin police cracked down on a university encampment on the third day of protests and faced formidable resistance from protesters, with the clash growing violent. After taking down encampment tents, protesters later replaced them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery individual was given the opportunity to move away from the tent area and continue peaceful protest,\u201d UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/police-remove-tents-at-uw-madisons-pro-palestinian-encampment\">wrote.<\/a> \u201cI cannot emphasize strongly enough our support for free expression and peaceful protest. Now that the illegal activity has been resolved, students and others are free to resume peaceful protest that abides by campus protest guidelines today or at any time in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of Connecticut \u2014<\/strong> 24 students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfsb.com\/2024\/04\/29\/pro-palestinian-protest-continues-uconn\/\">arrested<\/a>, one former student<\/h5>\n<p>An encampment on its fifth day of existence was cleared after officials found multiple problems with the camp as \u201csafety, health, and basic community standards need to be recognized and maintained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe group was warned multiple times over a period of days that while they were free to be in the space and exercise their free speech rights, the guidelines needed to be followed and the tents needed to be taken down,\u201d a spokeswoman for the school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/2024\/04\/30\/uconn-cracks-down-on-student-protest-more-arrested\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said.<\/a> \u201cThis was ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUConn Police directed them four times on Tuesday morning to remove the tents and disperse, and they again repeatedly ignored the directives. Officers then entered the site to remove the tents and tarps, and to arrest those who refused compliance,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Columbia \u2014<\/strong> Administrators passive in addressing, then order New York Police Department arrests after building break-in<\/p>\n<p>Columbia was the site of one of the first pro-Palestine encampments, and the university mostly hesitated to deploy the NYPD until protesters breached an academic building. (AP Photo\/Julius Motal)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBecause my first responsibility is safety, with the support of the University\u2019s Trustees, I made the decision to ask the New York City Police Department to intervene to end the occupation of Hamilton Hall and dismantle the main encampment along with a new, smaller encampment,\u201d Columbia President Minouche Shafik said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/president.columbia.edu\/news\/message-president-minouche-shafik-5-1-24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>. \u201cThese actions were completed Tuesday night, and I thank the NYPD for their incredible professionalism and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>California State Polytechnic University<\/strong> <strong>at Humboldt \u2014<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/30\/nyregion\/california-poly-humboldt-protests-arrests.html\">Arrested <\/a>protesters after administrative building occupied<\/h5>\n<p>Protesters occupied an administration building, causing a campus shutdown and at least 25 people to be arrested.<\/p>\n<p>President Tom Jackson Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/students\/free-speech\/2024\/05\/01\/cal-poly-humboldt-pro-palestinian-occupation-finally-ends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>described<\/a> the occupation as \u201cserious criminal activity that crossed the line well beyond the level of a protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI commend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/instagram-announces-policing-of-private-direct-messages-law-enforcement-team-up-in-latest-hate-speech-crackdown\/\" title=\"Instagram Announces Policing Of Private Direct Messages, Law Enforcement Team-Up\u00a0In Latest \u2018Hate Speech\u2019 Crackdown\u00a0\">law enforcement team<\/a> for their effort in resolving this very dangerous situation, and I\u2019m incredibly grateful for the many agencies who advised us and who came to our aid in our time of need,\u201d he said. \u201cOur focus for the entire time has been on doing all we could do to protect the safety of all involved, and we were very patient and very disciplined with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of Florida<\/strong> <strong>\u2014<\/strong> Small amount of arrests on campus encampment <\/h5>\n<p>A five-day occupation of the campus ended when police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alligator.org\/article\/2024\/04\/police-arrest-9-pro-palestine-protestors-on-uf-campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>acted<\/a> on the university\u2019s warnings toward protesters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not complicated: The University of Florida is not a daycare,\u201d a UF spokesman said. \u201cWe do not treat protestors like children \u2014 they knew the rules, they broke the rules, and they\u2019ll face the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Unique responses<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Northwestern University \u2014 <\/strong>Reached an agreement<\/p>\n<p>Northwestern\u2019s administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/education\/2985335\/northwestern-protesters-taking-down-encampment-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>came to an agreement<\/a> with protesters that they would form an advisory committee on university investments and other commitments in exchange for protesters halting demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis agreement represents a sustainable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/northwestern-university-caves-to-anti-israel-protesters-granting-numerous-demands\/\" title=\"Northwestern University Caves To Anti-Israel Protesters, Granting Numerous Demands\">de-escalated path forward<\/a>, and enhances the safety of all members of the Northwestern community while providing space for free expression that complies with University rules and policies,\u201d a statement from President Michael Schill, Provost Kathleen Hagerty, and Vice President for Student Affairs Susan Davis, said.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of South Florida \u2013 <\/strong>Tear gas used amid 10 arrests, protest planned off campus<\/h5>\n<p>Police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/breaking-news\/2024\/05\/01\/usf-protests-university-south-florida-protesters-arrested-tear-gas-uf-fsu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>used<\/a> tear gas on protesters to disperse them as law enforcement said protesters intended to use weapons against them. A protester was found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/more-usf-protesters-taken-into-custody-after-tear-gas-used-to-disperse-rally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>with<\/a> a gun, according to police.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">USF PROTESTS: Police have moved in on the protesters with what appears to be tear gas. However, the expression of free speech must remain peaceful and not violate the law or USF policies. The university has been clear the violence, threats, harassment and disruptions will not be tolerated,\u201d they continued.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Yale University<\/strong> <strong>\u2014<\/strong> No arrests <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/blog\/2024\/04\/30\/live-new-haven-and-yale-police-move-to-arrests-protesters-on-cross-campus\/\">made<\/a> as encampment cleared<\/h5>\n<p>Yale managed to compromise with protesters and got them to leave without any arrests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYale personnel issued final warnings that protesters in an encampment set up on Sunday afternoon on Yale\u2019s Cross Campus must end the encampment or face discipline including suspension for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/department-of-education-investigating-seven-schools-over-antisemitism-and-islamophobia-allegations\/\" title=\"Department of Education investigating seven schools over antisemitism and Islamophobia allegations\">violating university rules<\/a> and arrest for trespassing,\u201d a university statement <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yale.edu\/2024\/04\/30\/statement-regarding-campus-protests-cross-campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reads<\/a>. \u201cAll the protesters chose to leave the encampment, and the university is in the process of clearing tents and other items from the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Emory University \u2014<\/strong> Mass arrests follow growing encampment and misinformation<\/h5>\n<p>Emory quickly cleared an encampment last week before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/campus-protests-metro-atlanta-students-105431333.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>new protests<\/a> cropped up on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on the information we had early Thursday morning, we determined that the individuals who constructed the encampment on our Quad were not members of our community,\u201d Emory President Gregory Fenves <a href=\"https:\/\/news.emory.edu\/stories\/2024\/04\/er_campus_updates_28-04-2024\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said.<\/a> \u201cIt is clear to us now that this information was not fully accurate, and I apologize for that mischaracterization. My goal was to remove a growing encampment, as allowing such an encampment would have been highly disruptive, affecting everything from classes and exams to our ability to hold Commencement. I felt like they were being honest and telling me how they felt, which was very meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign \u2014<\/strong> Encampment <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyillini.com\/news-stories\/around-campus\/2024\/04\/30\/third-day-encampment-persists\/\">persists<\/a>; two unaffiliated men arrested<\/h5>\n<p>Illinois refused to take strict action against protesters on their campus, though two men <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcia.com\/news\/champaign-men-charged-with-mob-action-following-arrests-at-ui-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>who are not affiliated<\/a> with the school were arrested and charged with mob action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite our continued efforts throughout the day to ensure those who were participating were fully informed of the policies and rules that they needed to follow to continue their activities, the participants refused to adhere to them,\u201d Chancellor Robert Jones and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost John Coleman said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/massmail.illinois.edu\/massmail\/1523837289.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis afternoon, when university police officers attempted to escort university staff into the area to remove the encampment structures violating university policy, members of the demonstrating group prevented their entry and physically resisted,\u201d they added. \u201cThis included use of pieces of lumber as well as other physical tools and objects to push the officers back. Our officers made the decision to deescalate the situation and stepped back to reduce the risk of injury to themselves or the demonstrators.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><strong>University of California at Los Angeles \u2014<\/strong> Rival protest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/may\/01\/violence-erupts-ucla-university-campus-clashes-rival-gaza-protest-groups\">attacks<\/a> encampment, police intervene<\/h5>\n<p>Counterprotesters assaulted a pro-Palestine encampment on Tuesday as police arrived to quell tensions.
