Jim Jordan has written to Attorney General Merrick Garland seeking records regarding one of the Department of Justice\u2019s most senior former employees.<\/p>\n<p>In his letter, dated April 30, the chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary said that the committee was \u201cconducting oversight\u201d of what he called \u201cpolitically motivated prosecutions,\u201d specifically those launched last year against former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan wrote seeking records regarding former Acting Associate Attorney General Matthew Colangelo, one of the men in New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg\u2019s office who is leading the prosecution of Trump regarding 34 counts of first degree falsification of business records.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, such crimes are prosecuted as misdemeanors, but Bragg has claimed that since Trump allegedly falsified those records to \u201cprevent or promote [his own] election\u201d to office \u2014 itself another misdemeanor \u2014 the counts rise to the felony level, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/house-judiciary-investigating-bragg-prosecutor-senior-role-biden-doj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Colangelo\u2019s case relies heavily on the testimony of former Trump attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/federal-judge-slaps-michael-cohens-attempt-sue-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Cohen<\/a>, who himself had been investigated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/doj-refuses-comply-congressional-subpoena-hand-biden-audio-despite-threat-contempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Justice<\/a> and pleaded guilty to eight charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the Committee has previously explained, Bragg\u2019s politicized prosecution of President Trump has serious consequences for federal interests,\u201d Jordan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat a former senior Biden Justice Department official is now leading the prosecution of President Biden\u2019s chief political rival only adds to the perception that the Biden Justice Department is politicized and weaponized,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan requested copies of correspondence regarding Trump between Colangelo and other government offices \u2014 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/legal-expert-says-alvin-braggs-first-choice-witness-trump-trial-telling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York County<\/a> District Attorney\u2019s Office, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/georgia-republicans-give-huge-gift-fulton-county-da-going-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fulton County<\/a> District Attorney\u2019s Office, and the Department of Justice\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/official-ethics-complaint-filed-special-counsel-jack-smith-face-discipline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Special Counsel\u2019s Office<\/a>, all of which are currently involved in active criminal prosecutions against the former president.<\/p>\n<p>He is also seeking any correspondence between Colangelo and the office of New York Attorney General Leticia James, who filed a civil suit against Trump claiming that he had lied on financial statements in an attempt to secure more favorable terms on bank loans.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are the prosecutions of former President Donald Trump politically motivated?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Trump has pleaded not guilty to all counts in every case and has repeatedly argued that the criminal charges against him are politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan also wants to see any documents involving requests that all such documents be turned over to by the close of business on May 14 \u2014 a deadline that seems highly unlikely to be met.<\/p>\n<p>Witness testimony in the hush money case being prosecuted by Bragg began on April 22, and the trial is expected to last six to eight weeks, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/projects\/trump-investigations-civil-criminal-tracker\/#:~:text=Trump%20was%20subsequently%20indicted%20in,to%20four%20years%20in%20prison.\" target=\"_blank\"
