This decision coincided with \u2062protests following the Israel-Hamas conflict at universities nationwide, raising safety concerns\u200d for Jewish students. The bill, supported by 187 Republicans and 133 Democrats, \u2062adopts\u200c the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism. House GOP\u2064 Conference \u200cChair Elise Stefanik emphasized the importance of ensuring\u200c safety for Jewish students\u200c on campuses.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The GOP-led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/u-s-house-of-representatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House<\/a> passed a bill on Wednesday to codify a definition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/anti-semitism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-Semitism<\/a> meant to guide enforcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/federal-court-approves-settlement-in-case-over-black-only-relief-fund\/\" title=\"Federal Court Approves Settlement in Case Over Black-Only Relief Fund\">federal anti-discrimination laws<\/a> concerning educational programs \u2014 at a time when protests in response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza have sprung up at universities across the country and spurred safety concerns for Jewish students.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three-quarters of the chamber, including <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2024172\">187 Republicans and 133 Democrats<\/a>,\u00a0voted in favor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/6090\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antisemitism Awareness Act<\/a>. Twenty-one Republicans and 70 Democrats voted against the measure. Nine members of each party did not vote.<\/p>\n<p>Introduced by Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), the bill adopts the working definition of anti-Semitism put forward by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) that <a href=\"https:\/\/holocaustremembrance.com\/resources\/working-definition-antisemitism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> anti-Semitism is \u201ca certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and\/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On X, House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepStefanik\/status\/1785642360539332672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the bill codifies an executive order from former President Donald Trump and \u201cis an incredibly important step to ensure that Jewish students and community members at America\u2019s universities feel safe once again on campus and sends a clear message that [House Republicans] will not tolerate antisemitism anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I fully support <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMikeLawler?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepMikeLawler<\/a>&#8216;s Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023. <\/p>\n<p>This bill codifies President Trump\u2019s Executive Order and is an incredibly important step to ensure that Jewish students and community members at America\u2019s universities feel safe once again on campus and sends\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Elise Stefanik (@RepStefanik) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepStefanik\/status\/1785642360539332672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the bill\u2019s critics was Judiciary ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?535288-2\/house-session&#038;live&#038;vod&#038;start=4905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> in floor remarks that settling on a single definition of anti-Semitism could undermine enforcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-justice-department-pick-helped-kill-pipeline-favored-by-key-senator\/\" title=\"Biden Justice Department Pick Helped Kill Pipeline Favored by Key Senator\">federal civil rights law<\/a>. He also noted the IHRA has a list of \u201ccontemporary examples\u201d of anti-Semitism that may include \u201cprotected speech in some contexts, particularly with respect to criticism of the state of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/1785686846426488942\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised similar freedom of speech<\/a> concerns with regard to the list. Rep.
