Introduced by Rep. Mike Lawler, the bill aims to address antisemitism on college campuses amid escalating protests and concerns over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/snl-elon-musk-wants-to-buy-twitter-so-white-guys-can-say-the-n-word\/\" title=\"\u2018SNL\u2019: Elon Musk Wants To Buy Twitter So White Guys Can Say \u2018The N-Word\u2019\">free speech restrictions<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The House passed a bill on Wednesday that will expand the definition of <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>antisemitism<\/a> used when applying the Civil Rights Act to universities despite <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democratic<\/a> pushback as pro-<a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/palestinian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Palestinian<\/a> and anti-<a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Israel<\/a> demonstrations are spreading across college campuses. <\/p>\n<p>House members<strong> <\/strong>voted 320-91<strong> <\/strong>to require the Education Department to codify the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s working definition of antisemitism in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Though a majority of Republicans voted for the bill, 21 Republicans joined 70 Democrats in opposing the measure.<\/p>\n<p>The Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023, introduced by Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), is the latest step being taken by House Republicans to combat antisemitism on campuses after protests sprouted up at colleges like Columbia University, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Wisconsin, Madison, and George Washington University, among others. Some of the demonstrations have turned violent, with both Democrats and Republicans condemning the behavior as going beyond the boundaries of protected free speech.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having 13 Democratic co-sponsors, several House Democrats, including Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-NY), opposed the bill because it ignored several other definitions of antisemitism. He added that even the chief author of the IHRA definition, Kenneth Stern, has said it should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/persons-of-interest\/the-problem-with-defining-antisemitism\">not be codified<\/a> into law.<\/p>\n<p>Nadler adamantly opposed Lawler\u2019s words during floor debate earlier on Wednesday, saying that any suggestion that Democratic opposition to the bill means supporting antisemitism is \u201cslanderous\u201d and a \u201cdisgrace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others said they were worried it would restrict free speech or inflame tensions that derive from the war between Israel and Hamas since Oct. 7 of last year.<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) called on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) earlier this week to bring the Bipartisan Countering Antisemitism Act from Rep. Cathy Manning (D-NC) to the House floor for a vote instead. Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) had argued the proposal would be Democrats\u2019 \u201cchosen vehicle\u201d to crack down on antisemitism. <\/p>\n<p>Lawler said he would support Manning\u2019s bill coming to the floor, but the objective right now is to \u201cclearly define\u201d antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>While not altering the definition of antisemitism, Manning\u2019s bill would establish a national coordinator within the White House to oversee a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cant-just-blame-the-republicans-rep-ro-khanna-hits-biden-on-inflation-says-u-s-needs-bolder-vision-and-faster-action\/\" title=\"\u2018Can\u2019t Just Blame The Republicans\u2019 \u2014 Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), who is Jewish, said on Tuesday that she was \u201cvery concerned\u201d that codifying the IHRA definition will limit the ability of people to have \u201cconstructive and legitimate criticism of Israel.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also think it is, yet again, more performative action by a party that has been clearly not champions against antisemitism, so I have a very difficult time taking it seriously,\u201d Balint said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like it is more of this, like, seizing on the moment to enflame war,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd what I\u2019m trying to do is bring the temperature down so we can talk about it.
