The \u2063debate hinges on gun safety versus\u2064 personal defense rights, with varying views on empowering educators for security.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>After passing legislation through the Tennessee House last Tuesday to allow teachers to carry firearms in school, Tennessee Republicans faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2024\/04\/23\/tennessee-house-republicans-pass-bill-to-allow-teachers-to-carry-handguns\/73331384007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticism<\/a> from Democrat lawmakers and activists who have a track record of demonizing any \u201cgun violence prevention\u201d efforts that return self-defense authority to the people.<\/p>\n<p>Their opposition to such a policy stems solely from the fear that it would underscore the belief that law-abiding Americans can safeguard themselves and others through the proper exercise of their Second Amendment rights, fundamentally undermining the\u00a0left\u2019s\u00a0argument that the issue lies with the firearm instead of the individual. Rather than empowering law-abiding gun owners, who could serve as a strong deterrent against those seeking to misuse firearms, they opt for \u201cgun-free zones\u201d and continuous restrictions, seemingly granting criminals an advantage in violent scenarios.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-422706752\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-330932255a3a8a59a501cacf584ac828 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-330932255a3a8a59a501cacf584ac828\"><\/div>\n<p>We must move away from scapegoating firearms and instead\u00a0shift our focus toward\u00a0enabling law-abiding citizens to engage in positive actions that contribute to safety and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>After all, this is what Americans want. According to a 2022 PDK International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/45-percent-of-american-adults-support-armed-teachers-in-schools-poll-finds\/2022\/08\">poll<\/a>, 80 percent of respondents favored allowing preventative safety measures in schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/police-officers-descend-on-nikki-haleys-home-after-anonymous-call\/\" title=\"Police swarm Nikki Haley's residence following anonymous tip\">including armed police<\/a>.\u00a0Forty-five\u00a0percent somewhat or strongly favored arming teachers as a \u201csafety strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 32 states allow teachers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usconcealedcarry.com\/blog\/which-states-allow-teachers-to-carry-concealed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conceal-carry<\/a> firearms, and others are working on joining this effort. Sadly, the \u201cprogressive\u201d\u00a0left\u00a0is doing everything in its power to demonize this move, meaning children in the remaining 18 states and the District of Columbia are left to fend for themselves behind \u201cgun-free zone\u201d signs.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0left\u00a0is also working to block Idaho teachers from protecting their students, <a href=\"https:\/\/idahocapitalsun.com\/2024\/01\/24\/idaho-republicans-advance-bill-to-arm-school-staff\/\">calling<\/a> the legislation \u201ccompletely impractical\u201d or the process \u201creally troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-44fefac38bc27ab7f68b6a80002d71f7 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-44fefac38bc27ab7f68b6a80002d71f7\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAs far as we can see, no educators are actually asking for this,\u201d said Paul Stark, the executive director of the Idaho Education Association.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Idaho Republicans began taking steps to allow teachers to\u00a0conceal carry\u00a0firearms in schools. HB 415 \u2014 sponsored by GOP state Rep. Ted Hill \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/sessioninfo\/2024\/legislation\/h0415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed<\/a> through the House and will grant school employees the right to carry guns in classrooms and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/n-y-governor-approves-abortion-safe-haven-laws\/\" title=\"N.Y. governor approves abortion safe haven laws\">provide legal protections<\/a> for defensive fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese select school employees will provide an armed force to protect children in the first minutes of an attack,\u201d Hill said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to have a stack of 20 kids dead in a classroom because we didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One month later, state Sen. Jim Guthrie, R, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.idahoreports.idahoptv.org\/2024\/03\/08\/senate-committee-introduce-new-guns-in-school-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced<\/a> a similar bill in the Idaho Senate Affairs Committee co-sponsored by Rep. Ted Hill. The bill is a bit more flushed out, as it would require annual training for those who want to carry a gun in school and would require an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mississippi-schools-board-updates-policy-clearing-way-for-some-staff-to-have-guns-on-campus\/\" title=\"Mississippi Schools Board Updates Policy, Clearing Way for Some Staff to Have Guns on Campus\">enhanced carry license<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-35941569f8b17519f7d56d1ce0bccaa2 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-35941569f8b17519f7d56d1ce0bccaa2\"><\/div>\n<p>The bill would also require \u201c\u2019gun-free school zone\u2019 signs to be accompanied by additional signage\u201d notifying the public that the staff is armed. Letting an intruder know that the staff is armed and ready seems to be a better deterrent than telling intruders that no one in the area is carrying a gun.<\/p>\n<p>But if you follow the leftist logic that labels the gun as the problem and not the intruder, then you are probably horrified that there is a gun on campus at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere, where we have the school boards that are not authorizing this, it\u2019s for a reason\u2026They think the gun is the problem,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/idahocapitalsun.com\/2024\/01\/24\/idaho-republicans-advance-bill-to-arm-school-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Aoibheann Cline, Idaho state director for the NRA.<\/p>\n<p>Allowing teachers to carry firearms undoubtedly adds a layer of rapid protection that children deserve. The FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usconcealedcarry.com\/blog\/active-threat-events-more-than-run-hide-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> that most active threat events \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apexofficer.com\/resources\/active-shooter-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mass shootings<\/a> \u2014 are over within five minutes. Yet it takes law enforcement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usconcealedcarry.com\/blog\/guns-as-risk-management-during-disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">between<\/a> five and 10 minutes (at best) to respond to a shooting. The situation is even more dire for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usconcealedcarry.com\/blog\/pros-and-cons-of-arming-teachers-with-guns-in-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rural schools<\/a> that could be\u00a0left\u00a0stranded for over 20 minutes waiting for police response. <\/p>\n<p>Honorable, well-trained, law-abiding teachers can effectively fill that gap and save countless lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still highly believe in arming staff,\u201d Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center Superintendent Lori Snyder-Lowe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usconcealedcarry.com\/blog\/pros-and-cons-of-arming-teachers-with-guns-in-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> USCCA. \u201cEspecially in rural areas where access to law enforcement is limited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0left\u00a0cannot be allowed to twist the narrative and place the blame on firearms.
