Unsurprisingly, however, another Democrat is.<\/p>\n<p>Recent surveys have revealed the extent to which restaurant prices have skyrocketed in California since that state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/25\/californias-disastrous-minimum-wage-hike-offers-a-cautionary-tale-to-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new minimum wage<\/a> for chain restaurants took effect. Even though Biden had nothing to do with this latest bout of rising costs for residents, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/11\/17\/california-governor-breaks-his-own-covid-rules-to-eat-fancy-french-food-while-americans-go-hungry-in-lockdown\/\">French Laundry<\/a>) and Golden State lawmakers helped bring it about.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-966503460\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1918182b830ba9b21e0b05946003f2af fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1918182b830ba9b21e0b05946003f2af\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soaring Prices<\/h2>\n<p>Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/hospitality\/california-fast-food-chains-are-now-serving-sticker-shock-64009282?mod=trending_now_news_1\">published<\/a> in The Wall Street Journal provided visual evidence of how the required higher wage, which took effect on April 1, had raised prices of meals in California restaurants by as much as 10 percent over the past two months alone:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Journal interviewed one Los Angeles resident who said \u201chis usual $16 meal that he picks up weekly at the Chick-fil-A in Hollywood \u2026 now costs $20.\u201d To most Americans, the idea of paying $16 for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/climate-hysteria-france-pushes-harsh-new-airfare-plan-to-save-the-planet\/\" title=\"France's new airfare plan aims to combat climate change.\">fast-food meal<\/a> already seems like highway robbery, let alone after tacking on a 25 percent increase. But now, as the Journal noted, the state that already had some of the highest fast-food prices in the country will have to suffer even more inflationary pain.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Governor\u2019s Businesses Exempt<\/h2>\n<p>The minimum wage mandate began causing pain months before it went into effect. As I <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/25\/californias-disastrous-minimum-wage-hike-offers-a-cautionary-tale-to-congress\/\">previously noted<\/a> in The Federalist, establishments began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/california-pizza-hut-lays-off-delivery-drivers-amid-new-wage-law-2023-12\">laying off drivers<\/a> just before Christmas in anticipation of higher wage costs, and businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/california-pizza-hut-lays-off-delivery-drivers-amid-new-wage-law-2023-12\">told customers<\/a> they would have to raise prices to keep up. (You can\u2019t say they didn\u2019t warn you.)<\/p>\n<p>While the mandate has obvious inflationary effects, it also has distortionary ones. Because it only applies to fast-food restaurants, businesses in other industries \u2014 even large-scale behemoths like Amazon \u2014 will not face a government requirement to raise wages. So it will make restaurants more lucrative for workers and less profitable for owners when compared to, say, grocery stores, most of which now sell prepared food similar to that prepared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-california-bill-would-outlaw-fast-food-and-intensify-inflation\/\" title=\"This California Bill Would Outlaw Fast Food And Intensify Inflation\">fast-food establishments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7be4b3548eae7afb59444eedf36f7960 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7be4b3548eae7afb59444eedf36f7960\"><\/div>\n<p>Moreover, as the Journal noted, \u201cthe California wage law doesn\u2019t apply to restaurants with fewer than 60 national locations.\u201d While it may sound nice to cut \u201cmom-and-pop\u201d operations a break from the new mandate, government has no place picking winners and losers in such a manner. More to the point: What do you think the odds are that a growing business with 59, or even 55, establishments will expand further to cross that 60-establishment threshold and expose itself to higher wage costs across all its California locations? Two words: fat chance.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a further irony, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it involves Newsom. As a recent Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/california-minimum-wage-fast-food-plumpjack-cafe-gavin-newsom-d191c087?mod=opinion_feat1_editorials_pos3\">editorial<\/a> reported, a branch of the wine shop Newsom founded three decades ago recently advertised for a busboy opening \u2014 one that pays $16 an hour, not the $20 hourly wage required by the new law. Despite offering a $28 wagyu burger and a New York strip steak costing $67, this establishment can\u2019t afford to pay its workers the \u201cliving wage\u201d Newsom claims restaurant workers need.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Out-of-Touch Elites<\/h2>\n<p>Newsom told the Journal that he put his business \u201cinto a blind trust after he was elected Governor in 2018 and doesn\u2019t run its restaurants on a daily basis.\u201d (<em>Of course he would say that<\/em>.) But it\u2019s yet another instance of politicians not even attempting to live by the standards they impose upon others. Perhaps if the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/11\/17\/california-governor-breaks-his-own-covid-rules-to-eat-fancy-french-food-while-americans-go-hungry-in-lockdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chi-chi French Laundry<\/a> started complaining to Newsom about the cost of labor, he would actually listen.<\/p>\n<p>It shouldn\u2019t cost an arm and a leg for a family to afford an inexpensive night out at a local quick-service establishment \u2014 one of the few treats some families get to enjoy on a semi-regular basis. But that dream, like so many others, continues to grow out of reach for so many California households, which might explain why so many of them are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/travel\/news\/california-exodus-charts-show-huge-shift-in-which-us-states-most-people-are-moving-to\/ar-AA1iEbOC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moving elsewhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e4dc727c2078474183fcf2c2a7950797 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e4dc727c2078474183fcf2c2a7950797\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-06fc8e3bfb751bccc534c2b9b79c6334 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-06fc8e3bfb751bccc534c2b9b79c6334\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rising prices aren&#8217;t Joe Biden&#8217;s fault this time.
