However, Trump&#8217;s reluctance to engage with Nikki Haley could alienate crucial voter segments and hinder his reelection bid. The interactions between\u2062 key Republican \u200cfigures \u200clike Cesar Conda\u200d shed\u200b light on the\u2064 dynamics within the\u2062 party and their \u2062strategic\u2062 implications for the future.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The detente between former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> and Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ron-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ron DeSantis<\/a> (R-FL) is a boon for Trump and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican Party<\/a> before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But with Trump not yet reaching out to former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>U.N.<\/a> Ambassador <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nikki-haley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nikki Haley<\/a>, he could be undermining his own reelection campaign by not appealing to her voters.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans, including party strategist Cesar Conda, welcomed primary rivals Trump and DeSantis meeting last weekend in their home state of Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Trump-DeSantis meeting shows that Trump is trying to consolidate some voters who might still be upset at the harsh words tossed both ways,\u201d Conda, a founding partner of Navigators Global, an all-Republican lobbying firm, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cIt is unifying that Republicans oppose President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/d-c-city-council-pushes-soft-on-crime-overhaul-of-its-criminal-code\/\" title=\"D.C. City Council Pushes Soft-on-Crime Overhaul of Its Criminal Code\">radical left-wing policies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven former Trump Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/william-barr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>William Barr<\/a> has conceded that Biden is so radical that even Republicans with deep concerns about another Trump term will not hesitate to cast a ballot to keep President Biden out of office for a second term,\u201d Conda said.<\/p>\n<p>Considering their similar populist policy positions, Trump\u2019s and DeSantis\u2019s voters overlapped more than either one of theirs did with Haley\u2019s, though DeSantis and Haley did share anti-Trump support. Regardless, by making overtures to DeSantis\u2019s voters, Trump could shore up his support among people who approved of DeSantis\u2019s Trump-esque platform but disapproved of the former president\u2019s temperament.<\/p>\n<p>Conda hopes that Trump and Haley will also \u201cmend fences,\u201d particularly because Haley retains \u201csignificant support\u201d from primary voters despite suspending her campaign in March after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/super-tuesday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Super Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump benefits by removing the argument that not all Republican primary voters will support him in the fall, and Haley will benefit if she has her eye on 2028,\u201d the former chief of staff to Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marco-rubio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Marco Rubio<\/a> (R-FL) said. \u201cParty unity is important when you have an election that is expected to be so close in the swing states of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Pennsylvania<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wisconsin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Wisconsin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Michigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/arizona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Arizona<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nevada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nevada<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Georgia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>North Carolina<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second Republican strategist, John Feehery, DeSantis\u2019s decision to sit down with Trump after an acrimonious primary was motivated, too, by his own political aspirations. During the primary, Trump nicknamed the term-limited DeSantis \u201cDeSanctimonious,\u201d and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/super-pacs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>super PAC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/maga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>MAGA<\/a>, Inc. ran ads about the governor\u2019s reported predilection for pudding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing successful in politics is an exercise in getting over past grievances and finding a way to be for what is going to happen,\u201d Feehery, a partner at EFB Advocacy, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Trump\u2019s party, and he has a better than 50% chance of winning the election,\u201d Feehery said. \u201cIt makes sense for DeSantis to be seen as helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claremont McKenna College politics professor John Pitney quipped that \u201cTrump and DeSantis would probably like to march each other to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kristi-noem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kristi Noem<\/a>\u2018s gravel pit,\u201d a reference to recent revelations that the Republican South Dakota governor personally put down her dog and a goat on her farm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they have a mutual interest in making nice,\u201d Pitney, a former Republican aide, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cLegal fees are causing Trump to hemorrhage money, and DeSantis can help him with fundraising. He could also come in handy during the fall if the polls show that Florida is close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever happens in the election, Trump will be a force in Republican politics for years to come, and DeSantis will have a tough time with future campaigns if Trump opposes him,\u201d Pitney said.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden campaign did not respond to the <em>Washington Examiner\u2019s<\/em> request for comment about DeSantis, but Biden and his team have made entreaties to Haley voters, including last week through a six-figure digital ad buy after 157,000 Republicans supported her in Pennsylvania\u2019s closed primary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor months, Donald Trump told Nikki Haley voters that he didn\u2019t want their support, and they heard him loud and clear,\u201d Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler told reporters.<strong> <\/strong>\u201cOur campaign has been clear from the beginning that we welcome anyone who knows that four more years of Trump would destroy our freedoms and devastate our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But at least one former Haley staffer is skeptical the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/south-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>South Carolina<\/a> governor\u2019s voters will support Biden, instead encouraging Trump to expand his coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s near impossible to win a swing state without earning the support of Haley Republicans,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/poll-most-americans-dont-believe-biden-will-run-for-second-term\/\" title=\"POLL: Most Americans Don\u2019t Believe Biden Will Run For Second Term\">operative told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThese are Republican primary voters who are fed up with the drama and chaos of the past and are actively turning out to vote against the presumptive Republican nominee. If Trump wants to win, he should do everything he can to win over Nikki\u2019s support and her voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump and DeSantis had breakfast last Sunday, organized by Steve Witkoff, a real estate mogul and friend of the pair, at Witkoff\u2019s Shell Bay Club in Hallandale Beach, Florida, at the governor\u2019s request. The meal ended a yearlong standoff between Trump and DeSantis that started when DeSantis posed a credible threat to Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-biden-administration-abandoning-15-minimum-wage-over-worries-it-wont-survive-covid-talks\/\" title=\"Report: Biden Administration Abandoning  Minimum Wage Over Worries It \u2018Wont Survive\u2019 COVID Talks\">primary campaign<\/a>, long before the governor dropped out of the race in January after the Iowa caucuses but before the New Hampshire primary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very happy to have the full and enthusiastic support of Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida,\u201d Trump posted on social media. \u201cThe conversation mostly concerned how we would work closely together to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Also discussed was the future of Florida, which is FANTASTIC! I greatly appreciate Ron\u2019s support in taking back our Country from the Worst President in the History of the United States. November 5th is a BIG DAY!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis did endorse Trump in his concession video after days earlier criticizing Republicans who kowtow to Trump, but unlike other primary opponents, he has not campaigned or fundraised for the former president. Rather, DeSantis told donors last month he would raise money for Trump as he tries to maintain relationships with his supporters before another potential bid.
