Introduced by Rep.\u200b Mike Lawler, the bipartisan Antisemitism\u2063 Awareness Act of \u200b2023 aims to define antisemitism. While some support the bill, others, including\u2063 House Democrats,\u200b advocate for a\u200c separate bipartisan \u200cmeasure to combat antisemitism\u2064 with\u2063 a focus on creating a national coordinator \u200bwithin the White House.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The House will vote on an <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>antisemitism<\/a> bill on Wednesday in response to the nationwide pro-<a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/palestinian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Palestinian<\/a> protests occurring across college campuses, with some <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Democrats<\/a> coming out against the legislation as it would expand the definition of antisemitism. <\/p>\n<p>The bipartisan Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023, which was introduced by Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), would require the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/education-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Education Department <\/a>to codify the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s working definition of antisemitism in Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. All <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-commit-to-barring-schools-receiving-federal-funds-from-allowing-biological-males-in-womens-sports\/\" title=\"Republicans Commit To Barring Schools Receiving Federal Funds From Allowing Biological Males In Women\u2019s Sports\">schools receiving federal funds<\/a> must comply with Title IV, changing how federal anti-discrimination laws on college campuses would be enforced.<\/p>\n<p>Several House Republicans have praised the bill as the necessary next step after pro-Palestinian protesters have engaged in antisemitic behavior on such campuses as Columbia University, University of California, Los Angeles, and George Washington University, among others. Many of the demonstrations have forced Jewish students off campus or prohibited their ability to go to class, prompting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2978428\/johnson-stares-down-jeers-at-hostile-columbia\/\">Republicans<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2974644\/house-democrat-columbia-president-antisemitic-protests-job-on-line\/\">Democrats<\/a> to visit Columbia and condemn the actions of the students.<\/p>\n<p>Others have also gone so far as to criticize President Minouche Shafik\u2019s inability to maintain order, calling on her and other Columbia officials to resign if protests are not disbanded. <\/p>\n<p>The Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023 has 13 Democratic co-sponsors. However, several Democrats have pushed back against Lawler\u2019s proposal, instead pushing for a separate bipartisan measure that would create a position within the White House tasked with countering antisemitism. <\/p>\n<p>The Bipartisan Countering Antisemitism Act from Rep. Cathy Manning (D-NC) would establish a national coordinator within the White House to oversee a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cant-just-blame-the-republicans-rep-ro-khanna-hits-biden-on-inflation-says-u-s-needs-bolder-vision-and-faster-action\/\" title=\"\u2018Can\u2019t Just Blame The Republicans\u2019 \u2014 Rep. Ro Khanna Hits Biden On Inflation, Says U.S. Needs \u2018Bolder Vision And Faster Action\u2019\">task force focused<\/a> on combating domestic antisemitism. It would also require the administration to report to Congress on federal strategies implemented to combat antisemitism and designate a senior official in the Education Department to advise the department\u2019s response to antisemitism on campuses.<\/p>\n<p>That proposal has received the backing of Democratic leaders, who have called on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to bring the legislation to the floor for a vote instead. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effort to crush antisemitism and hatred in any form is not a Democratic or Republican issue,\u201d Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said in a letter to Johnson on Monday. \u201cIt\u2019s an American issue that must be addressed in a bipartisan manner with the fierce urgency of now. In this spirit, I strongly urge you to schedule a vote on the bipartisan Countering Antisemitism Act forthwith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) also praised Manning\u2019s bill because it would specifically task an official \u201cbased inside the White House,\u201d arguing the proposal would be Democrats\u2019 \u201cchosen vehicle\u201d to crack down on antisemitism. <\/p>\n<p>What is notable about Jeffries\u2019s preferred bill is that it does not touch on the definition of antisemitism, which is the key element of Lawler\u2019s bill. House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who has been one of the most vocal Democrats against the New York Republican\u2019s bill, said that he thinks Lawler\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/religious-leaders-demand-congress-take-seven-step-plan-to-fight-and-condemn-antisemitism\/\" title=\"Religious leaders urge Congress to adopt seven-step plan against antisemitism\">awareness act<\/a> is \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need is a comprehensive approach, such as in the Manning bill, and we need to increase appropriations for the Office of Civil Rights, which is in charge of enforcing Title IV against antisemitism and other forms of discrimination in education,\u201d Nadler said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lawler bill doesn\u2019t do anything to combat antisemitism; it simply codifies definitions put out by the International Holocaust Remembrance [Alliance], and it specifically rejects two other definitions, which are equally valid,\u201d the New York Democrat added.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that even the chief author of the IHRA definition, Kenneth Stern, has said it should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/persons-of-interest\/the-problem-with-defining-antisemitism\">not be codified<\/a> into law.<\/p>\n<p>Other House Democrats are worried that the bill is pouring more gas on the fire. Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), who is Jewish, said she is \u201cvery concerned\u201d that codifying the IHRA definition will limit the ability of people to have \u201cconstructive and legitimate criticism of Israel.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also think it is, yet again, more performative action by a party that has been clearly not champions against antisemitism, so I have a very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virginia-dems-balk-at-passing-major-gun-control-reforms-ahead-of-election\/\" title=\"Virginia Dems Balk at Passing Major Gun-Control Reforms Ahead of Election\u00a0\">difficult time taking<\/a> it seriously,\u201d Balint said.<\/p>\n<p>The Vermont Democrat praised the Manning bill, saying it \u201cactually does something\u201d to combat antisemitism instead of being a \u201cperformative way to divide us in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we please focus on the work that we need to do in Congress and give these schools the opportunity to work this out campus by campus? I just \u2014 I don\u2019t think a sledgehammer approach is going to help in this moment when tensions are so inflamed. I just don\u2019t see how that helps,\u201d Balint said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like it is more of this, like, seizing on the moment to enflame war,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd what I\u2019m trying to do is bring the temperature down so we can talk about it.
