Tim Kennedy won the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a> special election in the state\u2019s 26th Congressional District\u00a0to replace former <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democratic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democratic<\/a> Rep. Brian Higgins, narrowing the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Republican<\/a> majority even further ahead of the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2024 election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy defeated Republican Gary Dickson, a West Seneca supervisor who is an Army and FBI veteran, on Tuesday night. Kennedy has been a member of the New York state Senate since January 2011 and has said he considered Higgins a mentor.<\/p>\n<p>The state senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2979656\/new-york-republican-touts-better-message-in-long-shot-special-election-against-kennedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ran on a Democrat platform<\/a> of protecting Social Security and Medicare, as well as reproductive rights, in a \u201csolid Democratic\u201d seat ranked D+10 by <em>Cook Political Report<\/em>. Despite the similar last names, he is not related to former President John F. Kennedy. However, with his win, he will become the sole Democratic Kennedy in Congress since the exit of former Massachusetts Rep. Joe Kennedy, who served from 2013 to 2021 and now serves as the United States\u2019s special envoy for Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy held a significant advantage regarding fundraising and exposure in the special election. Kennedy also spent years becoming one of the top New York political fundraisers, raising $745,000 in the first six weeks after entering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jims-gonna-be-dead-in-two-years-jennifer-carnahans-cynical-plot-to-replace-her-late-husband-jim-hagedorn-in-congress\/\" title=\"'Jim's Gonna' Be Dead in Two Years: Jennifer Carnahan's Cynical Plot to Replace Her Late Husband Jim Hagedorn in Congress\">special election race<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Associated Press<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/special-election-congress-new-york-kennedy-dickson-e7b6956b577c63109491ccf805f0bc81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"called\">called<\/a> the race for Kennedy shortly after polls closed. With 26% of the vote tallied, Kennedy had 72%.<\/p>\n<p>The newly elected congressman will now finish out Higgins\u2019s term in the 118th Congress through Jan. 3, 2025, narrowing Speaker Mike Johnson\u2019s (R-LA) GOP majority to 217-213, meaning he can only afford to lose one vote on any given measure to pass along party lines.<\/p>\n<p>The election for the full term for New York\u2019s 26th District is June 25. Former Democratic congressional candidate Nate McMurray, who ran for the House on two occasions in the past 10 years, will challenge Kennedy for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-republican-touts-better-message-in-long-shot-special-election-against-kennedy\/\" title=\"Republican in New York emphasizes 'strong message' in unlikely special election against Kennedy\">full-term primary election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kennedy filed a lawsuit ahead of the special election, claiming that the signatures McMurray gathered to fulfill the petition requirement to be on the June ballot were fraudulent. McMurray submitted over 1,400 petitions, but the lawsuit claims <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/buffalo\/politics\/2024\/04\/16\/ny-26--kennedy-asks-judge-to-take-mcmurray-off-primary-ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"only 382 are valid,\">only 382 are valid,<\/a> per Spectrum News 1. The lawsuit also alleged Desmond Abrams, whom McMurray recruited to gather signatures, committed fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Other special elections in Colorado and New Jersey are on the horizon to replace Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO), who resigned in March, and New Jersey Democratic Rep. Donald Payne Jr., who died last week at 65.
