The city&#8217;s \u200dauditor, the sole elected\u200b official lacking subpoena power, faces challenges in\u2064 enforcing minimum \u2063and prevailing wage laws due to employers withholding critical\u200b information. Denver aims to equip the auditor \u200cwith the necessary tools for effective oversight.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 With one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/investing\/080515\/top-5-us-cities-highest-minimum-wage.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>highest<\/strong><\/a> minimum wages in the country, the city of Denver is looking to give subpoena power to its auditor so it can go after businesses for what it has deemed \u201cwage theft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city of Denver\u2019s auditor is the only elected official without subpoena power. The city stated that sometimes employers refuse to provide information necessary for investigators to enforce the city\u2019s minimum wage and prevailing wage laws. The city wants to give the auditor the ability to fine businesses that don\u2019t comply a $1,000 daily fine. The bill is before the city council on April 29.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the city can fine businesses $1,000 for failing to provide documentation. <\/p>\n<p>The city of Denver\u2019s prevailing wage <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/%20https\/\/denvergov.org\/Government\/Agencies-Departments-Offices\/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory\/Auditors-Office\/Denver-Labor\/Prevailing-Wage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordinance<\/a><\/strong> requires payment of the prevailing wage on any contracts with the city that are more than $2,000 that involve construction, improvement, repair, maintenance, demolition or janitorial work.<\/p>\n<p>There have been many studies about the cost of prevailing wage laws. The Michigan House Fiscal Agency produced a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.house.mi.gov\/hfa\/PDF\/Alpha\/Prevailing_Wage_Memo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a><\/strong> in 2015 that highlighted studies that showed the increased costs in the law. One 2011 study of construction costs in resurfacing highways in Colorado found there was no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cannabis-users-hospitalised-with-psychiatric-issues-up-74-per-cent-since-scotlands-quasi-decriminalisation\/\" title=\"Cannabis Users Hospitalised with Psychiatric Issues Up 74 Per Cent Since Scotland's Quasi-Decriminalisation\">statistically significant increase<\/a> in costs due to prevailing wage. Other studies cited found increased costs due to prevailing wage.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Denver\u2019s minimum wage is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denvergov.org\/Government\/Agencies-Departments-Offices\/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory\/Auditors-Office\/Denver-Labor\/Citywide-Minimum-Wage\/How-Enforcement-Works#:~:text=Denver's%20Minimum%20Wage%3A%20%2418.29%2Fhour,a%20jurisdiction%2Dwide%20minimum%20wage.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>$18.29<\/strong><\/a> an hour in 2024.
