Yet, Republicans outnumber\u2064 Democrats \u2062by 900,000 in voter registration. Despite a recent uptick in Republican registrations,\u2064 Democrats \u2064face historical challenges. Both parties \u200dare intensifying efforts for victory in this pivotal swing state.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democratic-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats<\/a> are projecting confidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Florida<\/a> is in play for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>President Joe Biden<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>this November<\/a>, particularly now that the issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>abortion access<\/a> will be on the state\u2019s ballots.<\/p>\n<p>But Florida voter registration data underscores the challenge for Biden if he wants to change the Sunshine State from red to blue this election cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Republicans now have 900,000 more registered voters than Democrats, with 5,250,234 Republicans compared to 4,349,737 Democrats, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewsWire_US\/status\/1783847738804707394\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reports<\/a>. That is an important, historic comparative advantage considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>former President Donald Trump<\/a> won the state\u2019s 29 electoral votes in 2020 by 3 percentage points, or 371,686 people, and that, until three years ago, Democrats have had the edge since Reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p>That data also represent a slight increase in Republican voter registration since publicly available data were last updated on March 31, the day before the Florida Supreme Court\u2019s abortion decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republican gains are a big deal as Florida Democrats were able to win some statewide elections over the past 24 years when they had at least a small lead in voter registration,\u201d University of Central Florida politics professor\u00a0Aubrey Jewett\u00a0told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cBut even with the small lead, they were often losing close statewide elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good examples include Florida gubernatorial races since former Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jeb-bush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Jeb Bush<\/a>\u2018s (R-FL) in 1998. Democrats lost to ex-Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rick-scott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Rick Scott<\/a> (R-FL) by about 1 point or less in 2010 and 2014 and then by less than half a point against incumbent Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ron-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ron DeSantis<\/a> (R-FL) in 2018. Republicans have also occupied the state\u2019s Senate seats since Scott replaced onetime Florida Democratic Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bill-nelson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Bill Nelson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>NASA<\/a>\u2018s administrator, in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the real question is, if Florida Democrats were barely staying competitive in some statewide races when they had a small lead in voter registration, how will Democrats be able to compete when Republicans have a sizable lead in voter registration?\u201d Jewett said.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential races in Florida have also historically been close, although Republicans have won the state in four of the six elections since 2000, and Trump, as a resident, is a favorite son candidate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only two races the Dems won were in 2008 and 2012, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" title>[former President Barack]  Obama<\/a> defeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-mccain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>John McCain<\/a> in 2008 by less than 3% of the partisan vote and in 2012 when Obama defeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mitt-romney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Mitt Romne<\/a>y by less than 1% of the partisan vote in Florida,\u201d University of South Florida government professor emeritus\u00a0Darryl Paulson told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cAll six of the Florida presidential races were decided by margins of 3% or less, with the 2000 presidential race decided by a margin of 537 votes in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/george-w-bush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>George W. Bush<\/a> after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>U.S. Supreme Court<\/a> halted the recount in Florida in <em>Bush v. Gore<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden campaign has cited Obama\u2019s wins, with abortion last being on Florida\u2019s ballots in 2012, Biden\u2019s policy positions, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>healthcare<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/entitlement-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>entitlement program reform<\/a>, and the president\u2019s popularity with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/seniors\/\">older voters<\/a>, in addition to Trump\u2019s underperformance in its Republican primary in March, as evidence of his path to victory in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c155,000 Republican primary voters\u00a0in Florida voted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nikki-haley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nikki Haley<\/a> in a primary that came after she suspended her campaign,\u201d Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez wrote in a memo this month of the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>U.N.<\/a> ambassador. \u201cSimilar to other states, including those with exit polls, we fully expect that many of those voters will not vote for Trump and are winnable for President Biden this November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Paulson, of the University of South Florida, downplayed the likelihood of Biden winning Florida on the single issue of abortion, conceding \u201cabortion combined with other factors may move Florida into the blue column.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem for Biden and Democrats is that most of the political factors in play in Florida currently favor Republicans and not Democrats,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rnc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican National Committee<\/a> remains adamant that \u201cBiden is losing in Florida and he knows it.\u201d Trump does lead Biden in the state by an average of 10 points, per <em><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/president-general\/2024\/florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>FiveThirtyEight<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Republican enthusiasm skyrocketing, voters are ready to turn out for President Donald J. Trump this November,\u201d RNC spokeswoman Rachel Lee\u00a0told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cDespite Biden\u2019s best attempts to gaslight voters, they know exactly who is to blame for soaring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>costs<\/a>, a spiraling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>border<\/a> crisis, and staggering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>crime<\/a> rates across the country.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>DeSantis, who met with Trump last weekend for the first time since he dropped out of the Republican primary in January, embodies Republicans\u2019 dominance in Florida, though some Republicans contend the state was trending red regardless of the governor. DeSantis won reelection in 2022 by almost 20 points. <\/p>\n<p>Florida is also poised to be the epicenter of Republican politics this weekend, with Trump holding a\u00a0three-day donor retreat in Palm Beach, attended by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-LA), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tucker-carlson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Tucker Carlson<\/a> addressing the Florida Family Policy Council\u2019s annual dinner in Orlando.<\/p>\n<p>For the University of Central Florida\u2019s Jewett, Florida Republicans\u2019 advantage over Democrats \u201cis not yet insurmountable,\u201d but Florida Democrats are \u201cclearly in trouble when it comes to registration and turnout numbers\u201d after more new residents registered as Republicans, as well as South Florida Hispanics, predominantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/cuban-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Cuban Americans<\/a>, becoming \u201cmore strongly Republican in the last few years as they started thinking Democrats were socialists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComplete Republican control of the election machinery of Florida has resulted in the passage of laws having a negative impact on Democratic voter registration, especially with minority voters,\u201d Paulson added. \u201cDemocrats may have a chance to win Florida\u2019s electoral votes in 2024, but only if the political doors open far wider than they currently are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding the odds, the Biden campaign\u2019s confidence comes from Florida\u2019s Supreme Court deciding, first, that DeSantis\u2019s six<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vogue-magazine-help-freezing-texans-by-paying-for-their-travel-to-get-an-abortion\/\" title=\"Vogue Magazine: Help Freezing Texans By Paying For Their Travel To Get An Abortion\">-week abortion ban<\/a> could become law on Wednesday and then, secondly, ruling that a constitutional amendment permitting abortions until about 24\u00a0weeks\u00a0of pregnancy could appear on the state\u2019s ballots in November. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps the most realistic hope for Florida Democrats may be that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ohio-abortion-rights-amendment-advances-after-ballot-language-approved\/\" title=\"Ohio abortion rights amendment advances after ballot language approved\">abortion rights amendment<\/a> may drive Democratic turnout so the results are not a blowout like they were in 2022 and that they actually are competitive and possibly win additional seats for Congress or at least in the state legislature,\u201d Jewett said. \u201cIf they can do that, then perhaps they can begin to turn the tide on registration. If not, then, indeed, Florida will begin to look and act like a reliably red Republican state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is significant that Biden and national Democrats say they will compete in Florida because if they don\u2019t make visits and spend money on ads, then Democrats will lose big, a self-fulfilling political prophecy,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Kamala-Harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kamala Harris<\/a> will be in Jacksonville on Wednesday after Biden traveled to Tampa last week to mark seven days before the abortion ban and following a digital ad buy for a 30-second abortion-focused spot called <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GgtPkQtEb_k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>\u201cTrust.\u201d<\/a> Florida Democrats have organized a press call on Tuesday to preview Harris\u2019s trip ahead of their leadership conference this weekend in Orlando.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats are optimistic about Biden&#8217;s chances in Florida this November, especially with abortion access on the ballot.
