The piece \u2062underscores the nation&#8217;s vulnerability\u200d despite \u200cits \u2063food abundance, stressing the need for\u2063 readiness in the \u200cface of potential disruptions in the food \u200dsector.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/%20\"><span>Samuel Short<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   April 29, 2024 at 1:46pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>While America is blessed with an abundance of food and many of us are fortunate enough to not worry about finding our next meal, sometimes reality rears its head that our nation is also susceptible to shortages.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Chipotle Chief Restaurant Officer Scott Boatwright sent an email to store managers informing them that free or discounted meals for employees should not include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/largest-us-fresh-egg-producer-halts-production-plant-destroys-nearly-2-million-chickens-disease-hits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chicken<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-25\/chipotle-tells-workers-to-skip-chicken-as-customer-demand-surges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported, Boatwright wrote, \u201cDue to its sustained strong sales we need your help to keep up with our guests\u2019 demand for this popular protein option,\u201d in an effort to get managers, employees and officer workers to stop ordering chicken.<\/p>\n<p>Boatwright\u2019s email came after the reintroduction of Chipotle\u2019s chicken al pastor menu item in March, which has apparently created a surge in chicken sales.<\/p>\n<p>Chipotle attributed both chicken al pastor and braised beef barbacoa to a 7 percent increase in first quarter comparable restaurant sales over last year.<\/p>\n<p>Another email was sent out on Wednesday from Chipotle Corporate Affairs and Food Safety Officer Lauria Schalow to clarify that this was a request: \u201cDue to the high demand for chicken in our restaurants and sustained success of our limited time offer Chicken al Pastor, we temporarily asked all of our employees at corporate and in-restaurants to select another protein option for their meals to preserve our supply. We expect this situation to be resolved within a week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chipotle gave the OK to employees to resume ordering freely in a statement on Thursday. Despite how short-lived the affair was, employees were still upset.<\/p>\n<p>Harper McNamara, a Chipotle employee in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/democratic-presidential-candidate-abruptly-unsuspends-campaign-bidens-michigan-debacle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a>, said, \u201cIt\u2019s disrespectful, just on a personal level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg also reported that some branch managers went as far as throwing out employees\u2019meals if they included chicken or threatening disciplinary actions.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with \u201cBloomberg TV\u201d, Chipotle Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol said, \u201cI think this is a story that\u2019s looking for a headline,\u201d in an effort to downplay the shortage.<\/p>\n<p>He did provide an explanation in saying, \u201c[T]he supply got really tight. We ask all our employees, including myself, to pitch in for a week to maybe try something else on our menu. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/good-news-bad-news-poll-majority-americans-ditching-movie-theaters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">good news<\/a> is we\u2019re through that pinch. There\u2019s no challenges on our chicken supply, actually. Our supply team\u2019s done fabulous job of securing supply to what has been really tremendous demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Niccol can explain the issue away as a simple pinch in-the-moment with Chipotle trying to keep up with what costumers are ordering, we know some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/critics-biden-infrastructure-plan-doesnt-address-cyber-security-threats-to-u-s-power-grid\/\" title=\"Critics: Biden infrastructure plan doesn\u2019t address cyber security threats to U.S. power grid\">supply chain issues<\/a> have plagued the economy as a whole lately.<\/p>\n<p>Lets just take Niccol at his word.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s still something to be learned here. We often go to the grocery store or our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-is-just-the-kind-of-chaos-the-american-economy-needs-cnn-praises-u-s-labor-shortage\/\" title=\"\u2018This Is Just The Kind Of Chaos The American Economy Needs\u2019: CNN Praises U.S. Labor Shortage\">favorite restaurant<\/a> and take it as a given that food will be readily available. Food is just there for us to eat or take home to our families to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>However, America is not insulated. We often look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chaos-begins-unfold-another-caribbean-island-people-take-streets-demanding-food-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food shortages<\/a>, or shortages of other necessities, and think its impossible for those things to happen here to us.<\/p>\n<p>This is America after all!<\/p>\n<p>Most don\u2019t want to face the uncomfortable reality: We do not exist in a bubble. We are susceptible to economic fluctuations and shortages. It was only four years ago we were going to the grocery stores to find the shelves cleared out in the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/rand-paul-newly-obtained-documents-show-alarming-extent-great-covid-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether its surging prices, shortages, or something worse \u2014 whimsically thinking these issues aren\u2019t \u201cAmerican\u201d could land us in a world of trouble.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
