Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   April 29, 2024 at 10:45am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A freight train derailed around 6:00 Monday morning, resulting in the closure of the Steel Bridge in Portland, Oregon, just in time for rush hour.<\/p>\n<p>Six cars from the Union Pacific freight train were involved in the accident, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kptv.com\/2024\/04\/29\/steel-bridge-closed-due-train-derailment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KPTV<\/a> \u2014 two empty lumber cars that were completely derailed, and four others that only partially came off the track.<\/p>\n<p>KPTV\u2019s Karli Olson reported that one of the cars was leaning against a structural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/condo-rescue-efforts-paused-for-safety-concerns-more-than-140-still-missing\/\" title=\"Condo Rescue Efforts Paused For Safety Concerns; More Than 140 Still Missing\">support column<\/a> of the Steel Bridge, and that Portland Fire and Rescue said its stability would have to be assessed by engineers before the bridge would be reopened.<\/p>\n<p>HazMat teams were also on site to \u201chelp determine the contents of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dea-agents-police-officers-shot-during-amtrak-inspection-in-arizona\/\" title=\"DEA Agents, Police Officers Shot During Amtrak Inspection In Arizona\">train cars<\/a>.\u201d No <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alarming-discovery-montana-issues-warning-not-eat-fish-caught-train-derailed-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hazardous materials<\/a> were yet reported to have been involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/train-cars-carrying-plastic-plunge-river-derailment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the crash<\/a>, but that assessment remained ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/kval.com\/news\/local\/train-derails-on-steel-bridge-bridge-closed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KVAL<\/a>, Union Pacific said that all the cars involved were empty, but it was unclear whether the railroad was referring to both cars that were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/deadly-train-derailment-closes-busy-interstate-directions-foreseeable-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fully derailed<\/a> or all six involved in the incident.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Six train cars were derailed on the east side of the Steel Bridge, according to Portland Fire and Rescue. Crews working to figure out if there are any hazardous materials on board. No injuries reported. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/udi673u7Nl\">pic.twitter.com\/udi673u7Nl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Karli Olson (@olson_karli) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/olson_karli\/status\/1784961965661819116?\">April 29, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>PF&#038;R also said that no injuries had been reported in the crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bridge is completely closed to all train, vehicle, and pedestrian traffic,\u201d KPTV reported. \u201cA section of the Eastbank Esplanade near the bridge is also closed to pedestrian traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you think train derailments are big issue in America?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The station also noted that several lines of the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District were \u201cdisrupted\u201d because of the bridge closure, so commuters were encouraged to use bus service for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>Willamette River traffic was also being affected, according to a statement from PF&#038;R spokesman Lt. Laurent Picard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue here is that one of the fully derailed cars is leaning against a support column of the bridge, so out of an abundance of caution, we closed down the entire bridge to all modes of traffic,\u201d Picard told KVAL. \u201cAn additional issue is the bridge can\u2019t be raised, obviously, so it\u2019s going to affect the traffic of vessels on the Willamette River as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt about 8:15 a.m. CDT, approximately five Union Pacific train cars derailed near the east end of the Union Pacific Steel Bridge in Portland, Oregon,\u201d Union Pacific said in a statement cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/news\/union-pacific-freight-train-derails-in-portland-hazmat-crews-on-scene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KSAZ<\/a>. \u201cThe train cars are empty. Clean up is underway, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Portland Police Bureau told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/traffic\/train-derailment-steel-bridge-bridge-portland\/283-82a5e93c-b09c-4300-ad45-cd3348dad16a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KGW<\/a> that the bridge was expected to remained closed for at least \u201cseveral hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the hardest working bridge in the city,\u201d Picard told KVAL. \u201cIt takes TriMet, multiple rail lines, light rail, cars, pedestrians, so there\u2019s really no other bridge in the city that has as many modes of transportation across it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s definitely a significant incident,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>KSAZ noted that Steel Bridge, a vertical lift bridge, was over a century old, having been opened in 1912.<\/p>\n<p>It is owned and operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-one-year-devastating-derailment-railroads-say-striving-improved-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Union Pacific Railroad<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koin.com\/news\/portland\/train-derailment-portland-steel-bridge-max-delays-04292024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KOIN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
