Not only are military parents barred from accessing all but basic information on their 13- to 17-year-olds in the military\u2019s online health care portal, but the adolescent minor also is <a href=\"https:\/\/womack.tricare.mil\/Portals\/152\/Document\/MHS%20GENESIS\/FT%20BRAGG_MHS_GENESIS_Patient_Portal_Eligibility_flyer.pdf?ver=Mc0zzM8LAmeRgyZrw9UDuA%3d%3d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not allowed<\/a> to have a user logon until 18. Though elected officials are tackling this issue on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=255136744343014&#038;id=100095400704658&#038;mibextid=WC7FNe&#038;rdid=ZxOu5dyj9EuUdthz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state<\/a> level, military parents will need to be their own advocates as they appeal to Congress to restore their parental rights.<\/p>\n<p>Military insurance provider Tricare finally issued a press release in March explaining Department of Defense (DOD) <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tricare.mil\/News\/TRICARE-News\/Article\/3714321\/the-hipaa-privacy-rule-and-military-health-care-what-parents-of-minors-need-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policies<\/a> that restrict parents from adolescent records in the portal, Military Health System (MHS) Genesis, as well as from \u201csensitive\u201d physical records.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1357337404\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-139a2d28d76f63ad32b2aa8bab71a19b fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-139a2d28d76f63ad32b2aa8bab71a19b\"><\/div>\n<p>Last year, I <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/26\/defense-department-is-boxing-parents-out-of-their-childrens-medical-care-and-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> about my experience of spending months trying to obtain the official policy that barred parents from these records. Now that the policy is out in the open, it must not be allowed to stand, as it is ultimately harmful to children.<\/p>\n<p>Many military parents object to providers\u2019 having a confidential relationship with their children because they do not trust activist MHS doctors who believe a child can be born in the wrong body to counsel their children on <em>anything<\/em> in secret \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/robbystarbuck\/status\/1646942049763991566\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as some are doing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One sobering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2341367\/how-opposing-daughters-gender-transition-made-parents-enemy-to-us-medical-establishment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">example<\/a> of what can happen when parents are excluded occurred in Louisiana, where two civilian parents were treated as the enemy. After less than an hour behind closed doors with their 13-year-old, the provider tried to manipulate them into affirming their daughter\u2019s new identity as a boy by asking them if they would \u201crather have a dead daughter or a live son.\u201d One of the doctors involved, Dr. Ryan Pasternak, is a leader in adolescent medicine and has co-written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jahonline.org\/article\/S1054-139X(14)00053-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommendations<\/a> for the Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) on the management of electronic health records. SAHM\u2019s ideal method includes permitting full access only to the adolescent, while actively blocking parents so they receive only nonconfidential information.<\/p>\n<p>Even as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmyJHaywood\/status\/1780284485772120575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state legislatures<\/a> are moving to restore parental access to unemancipated minor medical records, the MHS seems to be plowing ahead with its efforts to keep parents in the dark. With all I\u2019ve uncovered about adolescent confidentiality and gender activists within the MHS, parents are right to be concerned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-949e47a800382220a706b239dcdbac4d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-949e47a800382220a706b239dcdbac4d\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Congress Fails to Act<\/h2>\n<p>In 2017, the Defense Health Board, a federal committee that advises the secretary of defense, acknowledged in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.mil\/Reference-Center\/Reports\/2017\/12\/18\/Pediatric-Health-Care-Services-Report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> that the emerging field of adolescent medicine had \u201crecently made a profound shift from its traditional role. Instead of providing preemptive guidance to parents, providers now work to reduce risk-taking behaviors with their focus aimed directly at the adolescent.\u201d The board also recommended expanding the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to address\u00a0gender dysphoria and <em>suggested possibly including surgeries for gender-confused children<\/em> in the future. The board pointed out that the Tricare Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Treatment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2016-09-02\/pdf\/2016-21125.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">final rule<\/a> on Sept. 2, 2016, \u201cpermits \u2018coverage of all non-surgical medically necessary and appropriate care in the treatment of gender dysphoria.\u2019\u201d This was a final rule that came from unelected bureaucrats \u2014 not Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, recent efforts in Congress to prohibit coverage for transgender procedures for minor military children were <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/12\/senate-dems-vote-against-dod-ban-on-transgender-procedures-for-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">removed<\/a> by the Senate from the House-passed fiscal 2024 National Defense Authorization Act. <a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/IN\/IN12203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Language<\/a> to prevent the Exceptional Family Member Program from being used to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/08\/01\/military-sex-change-gender-transition-minors-special-needs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facilitate<\/a> child transgender transitions was also removed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bases, Schools Push Transgenderism<\/h2>\n<p>Today, adolescents can receive confidential care on military bases and in school-based clinics. For example, Joint Base Lewis-McChord\u2019s Madigan Army Medical Center\u2019s adolescent clinic offers subspecialty care for transgender confusion, sexuality issues, and substance use, among other <a href=\"https:\/\/madigan.tricare.mil\/Portals\/104\/Documents\/Minors-Health-Care-Rights-Washington-State.pdf?ver=2020-09-28-053237-947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">services<\/a>. Madigan also runs a system of <a href=\"https:\/\/madigan.tricare.mil\/Health-Services\/Pediatrics\/School-Based-Health-Clinics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/michelle-malkin-exposing-the-woke-school-counselor-cabal\/\" title=\"Michelle Malkin: Exposing the Woke School Counselor Cabal\">school-based health clinics<\/a><\/a> in 10 area schools; dependents on Tricare Prime insurance can visit the clinic once each week.<\/p>\n<p>If military parents aren\u2019t \u201caffirming\u201d of a transgender identity, activist group PFLAG <a href=\"https:\/\/pflag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/At-Ease-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommends<\/a> that children talk with \u201ca school counselor, the on-base youth Military Family Life Counselor (MFLC), a chaplain (if from an affirming denomination), or an online friend or peer.\u201d PFLAG also reveals that MHS Genesis \u201cnow allows patients to mark their gender identity in addition to their sex assigned at birth.\u201d This will \u201callow transgender youth to receive appropriate care without as many obstacles.\u201d And \u201cmilitary LGBTQ+ organizations are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AmyJHaywood\/status\/1783193658595959246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working with DoDEA<\/a> [schools for children of military families]  to incorporate the same procedures in school documents.\u201d   <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0de7fc23c63d6b764224717eae569068 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0de7fc23c63d6b764224717eae569068\"><\/div>\n<p>In the school-to-scalpel age, confidential care being provided to adolescents should cause alarm bells to go off. Ian Prior, founder of Fight for Schools, in his <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/15\/queer-whistleblower-exposes-evils-of-the-school-to-scalpel-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>, \u201cQueer Whistleblower Exposes Evils of the School to Scalpel Pipeline,\u201d shows how indoctrination into transgenderism can begin at school as young as kindergarten. In many cases, children are encouraged to socially transition at school. By the time parents find out, children can be convinced they were born in the wrong body, and doctors who favor the \u201cgender affirmation\u201d approach steer parents and their dysphoric children down that path of care.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to an official Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/dc.claremont.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Grooming-Future-Revolutionaries_Numbered-with-Cover_compressed-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teacher training<\/a> in May 2021, we know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openthebooks.com\/assets\/1\/6\/Culture_of_Secrecy_at_DoDEA2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">secret transgender transitions<\/a> are happening in overseas schools for military children. Former Rep. Vicky Hartzler wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-H-rOJJ_tcc&#038;t=216s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to DOD in 2021 asking why teachers were being trained at a DODEA teachers summit to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/24\/dod-is-forging-a-woke-k-12-army-with-race-and-sex-indoctrination-in-military-schools\/\">transition children<\/a> at school without parents\u2019 knowledge. She never received a response \u2014 and DODEA has avoided accountability even to this day.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke with a military mom whose daughter, Cami (not her real name), was enrolled in a public school in Fairfax County, Virginia, that concealed from her parents that she had transitioned to a boy at school. Though the mother only wanted Cami to see a therapist to address her depression, military medicine additionally referred her to a so-called gender clinic in the Washington, D.C., area. When the mother didn\u2019t take her daughter to the clinic, she received a call from a military doctor who suggested Cami might need puberty blockers to give her time to decide about her sex. At the time of our conversation, the family was still reeling from the harm that \u201ctrusted\u201d adults at school had caused.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MHS Treats Thousands of Confused Dependents<\/h2>\n<p>Armed with this information about a gender clinic on base, I found <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/milmed\/article\/184\/5-6\/e447\/5133038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> conducted by active-duty medical doctors and a medical school professor that mentioned a regional referral-based adolescent medicine clinic that opened in 2014 and serves dependents between the ages of 9 and 24. It provides \u201cservices including diagnosis, puberty suppression, affirming-hormone treatment, reproductive health services \u2026 and affirming counseling, and refers for surgical, ancillary (e.g., voice therapy) and complex mental health services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ft. Belvoir in Virginia fit the clinic\u2019s description, and transgender-confused children do, indeed, seek care there. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/military-families-transgender-kids-fear-future-n787046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. David Klein<\/a> was chief of adolescent medicine at Ft. Belvoir in 2016. He and his associates have diligently documented their research on transgender-identifying military dependents. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6503498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reveal<\/a> that from 2009 until 2017, more than 2,500 military dependents, ages 4 to 25, sought treatment for gender confusion from the MHS. When Tricare began to pay for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for dependents in 2016, they observed a marked increase in the number of patients seeking such care. One can only imagine how high the figures are today when taking into account estimates that the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/39-states-take-sides-in-pivotal-trial-over-ban-on-child-transgender-surgeries\/\" title=\"39 States Take Sides in Pivotal Trial Over Ban on Child Transgender Surgeries\">transgender-identifying youth<\/a> in the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/trans-adults-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly doubled<\/a> between 2016 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Another Klein <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/milmed\/article\/184\/5-6\/e447\/5133038?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> looked at 53 gender-confused adolescents and measured parental support for their care. Researchers looked at MHS data from 2014 to 2017 and rated strong support of parents for initiation or continuation of \u201cgender transition\u201d at 55.8 percent, non to moderately supportive at 25 percent, and conflicted support at 19.2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Though numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcktraining.com\/blog\/20220701caution-and-hope-for-military-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies<\/a> show that military kids suffer from a higher rate of anxiety and depression than their civilian peers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2018\/1201\/p645.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">key recommendations<\/a> from Klein and his co-authors provide advice to doctors as if wrongly named \u201cgender affirmation\u201d is the only approach for treating gender dysphoria. They claim a transgender diagnosis is not necessarily related to other mental health concerns and that attempts \u201cto convert a person\u2019s gender identity to align with their sex assigned at birth are unethical and incompatible with current guidelines and evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klein and colleagues made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/pentagon-doctors-claim-7-year-olds-can-make-decisions-injected-hormones-puberty-suppressants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news<\/a> last year and caught <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/gop-reps-accuse-pentagon-doctors-advocating-chemical-castration-military-connected-minors-radical-agenda.amp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">congressional attention<\/a> when they stated in their latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2022.307163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>, in a discussion about understanding the risks and benefits of \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care, that 7-year-olds can begin participating in medical decision-making. Fortunately, as former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard pointed out to Tucker Carlson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=547449297577613&#038;ref=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">53 percent of MHS physicians<\/a> in that study said they would refuse to prescribe hormones even if trained to do so. Sadly, others would be willing to, and Klein is now the Family Adolescent Medicine Program director at Travis Air Force Base in California \u2014 training the next generation of military physicians.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Falling out of Favor Around the World<\/h2>\n<p>Even as MHS leaders continue to promote this harmful medicating of children, it is rapidly falling out of favor among doctors around the world, who are opting for psychotherapy as a first line treatment for gender dysphoria, after <a href=\"https:\/\/acpeds.org\/press\/pediatricians-release-position-statement-reviewing-over-60-studies-on-mental-health-in-adolescents-with-gender-dysphoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies<\/a> have shown \u201cno demonstrable, long-term benefit\u201d on \u201cpsychosocial well-being of adolescents with gender dysphoria.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the leading organization for transgender care, WPATH, was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/56a45d683b0be33df885def6\/t\/65e6d9bea9969715fba29e6f\/1709627904275\/U_WPATH+Report+and+Files.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exposed<\/a> for its lack of evidence and safeguards that led to members performing pseudoscientific surgical and hormonal experiments on minors. And, similarly, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cass.independent-review.uk\/home\/publications\/final-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cass Review<\/a>, released this month, detailed how England\u2019s leading\u00a0specialist youth transgender \u201cclinic,\u201d now permanently closed, was <a href=\"https:\/\/donoharmmedicine.org\/2024\/04\/11\/cass-report-slams-gender-affirming-care-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">untethered from evidence-based<\/a> medicine.<\/p>\n<p>As the rationale for transgender drugs and surgeries unravels, a <a href=\"https:\/\/libertycenter.org\/breaking-chloe-cole-pursues-punitive-damages-in-medical-malpractice-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legal reckoning<\/a> is being led in the United States by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/18\/detransitioned-teens-explain-why-they-regret-changing-genders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detransitioners<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/22\/opinion\/medicine-shuns-gender-detransitioners-like-me-but-we-deserve-to-be-heard-and-helped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chloe Cole<\/a>, who began transitioning at 12 and had a double mastectomy by 15. DOD and affirming doctors in the MHS must be included in this reckoning and held accountable for any harm suffered by military dependents under their care.<\/p>\n<p>Laws and policies that allow medical records and medical treatment of adolescents to be hidden from parents are potentially harmful to children and destructive to families, and this is why military parents must urge Congress to strike DOD\u2019s policies that drive a wedge between them and their children and to pass <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/article\/congress-must-ensure-parental-rights-receive-highest-level-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legislation<\/a> that clarifies their right to guide the medical care of their children.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-414d0f250cdbc1d3ef3951b33235b12b fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-414d0f250cdbc1d3ef3951b33235b12b\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parents nationwide are facing restrictions on accessing their teenage children&#8217;s online health records. Military parents are particularly limited in viewing detailed information on their 13 to 17-year-olds in the military health portal.
