McConnell \u200cemphasized the significance of focusing on Senate leadership while respecting\u2063 the selection made \u200bby Republican voters.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Senate Minority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mitch-mcconnell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Mitch McConnell<\/a> (R-KY) indicated that he will support former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> in the upcoming election, arguing that it is who voters desire to be the Republican Party\u2019s nominee.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell\u2019s statement comes as Trump is the Republican Party\u2019s presumptive nominee for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2024 presidential election<\/a>, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schiff-nadler-call-flynn-pardon-abuse-of-power\/\" title=\"Schiff, Nadler Call Flynn Pardon 'Abuse of Power'\">minority leader<\/a> falling back on his previous statement in 2021 that he would support the nominee. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kentucky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kentucky<\/a> senator has greatly criticized Trump in the past, claiming in February 2021 that Trump was \u201cpractically and morally responsible\u201d for the Capitol protest on January 6. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell the answer is the Republican voters of this country have spoken,\u201d McConnell told <em>Meet the Press<\/em>. \u201cThey get to pick nominees for president. So, how I\u2019m spending my time is on something I can have an impact on, which is making sure my successor is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-ends-negotiations-with-nancy-pelosi-on-coronavirus-relief\/\" title=\"Donald Trump Ends Negotiations with Nancy Pelosi on Coronavirus Relief\">majority leader<\/a> and not the minority leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite his criticism in February 2021, McConnell voted not to impeach Trump in his second impeachment vote. The senator defended that decision, explaining that Trump \u201cwas not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-running-against-rubio-releases-first-campaign-ad-doesnt-list-single-congressional-accomplishment\/\" title=\"Democrat Running Against Rubio Releases First Campaign Ad, Doesn\u2019t List Single Congressional Accomplishment\">president anymore<\/a> at that point.\u201d He reiterated that he still stands by his past criticism, though recognizing that there was a \u201cbig debate\u201d over whether someone who is no longer in office could still be impeached.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2903669\/mcconnell-endorses-trump-for-president-despite-rocky-past\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>McConnell endorsed Trump on March 6<\/a>, the same day former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley suspended her 2024 presidential campaign. Like McConnell, Barr has been a critic of Trump, though he has argued that the former president is better equipped to handle the multitude of problems facing the United States than President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/2977340\/trump-wipes-biden-momentum-swing-states-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Recent polling data<\/a> from the past week showed Trump having a lead over Biden in six of seven swing states, including Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, and Wisconsin.
