First, they\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/26\/nyregion\/columbia-student-protest-zionism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clearly<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sahar_tartak\/status\/1782083841001402558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">included<\/a> some antisemitism, much of which is far more radical than conservative speech the same schools and supportive journalists regularly subject to suppression. Second, many if not most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pressed-to-address-anti-semitic-sign-displayed-at-campus-rally-northwestern-law-dean-instead-denounces-doxing\/\" title=\"Northwestern Law Dean condemns 'Doxing' instead of addressing anti-Semitic sign at campus rally\">campus protesters<\/a>, outside headline-grabbing antisemites, believe they oppose Hamas, do not hate Jews, and genuinely think they are fighting a colonialist genocide. <\/p>\n<p>The point of recognizing this is not to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dont-bother-to-bring-in-the-clowns-theyre-already-here-john-kennedy-gives-big-city-mayors-step-by-step-guidance-how-to-fix-rising-crime\/\" title=\"\u2018Don\u2019t Bother To Bring In the Clowns, They\u2019re Already Here\u2019: John Kennedy Gives Big City Mayors Step-By-Step Guidance How To Fix Rising Crime\">excuse schools<\/a> for botching their responses or let organizers off the hook for platforming bigotry. (They\u2019ve certainly never let the right off the hook for hangers-on or plants.) The point is actually to suggest that while antisemitism will sadly never be extinguished \u2014 and there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/02\/13\/1230928104\/large-majorities-americans-antisemitism-serious-problem-ajc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some<\/a> evidence it may be rising \u2014 the ideology motivating campus protesters is becoming much more widespread. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1687673831\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9ee3f34f6e79d7dbe4e566508e80d7c8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9ee3f34f6e79d7dbe4e566508e80d7c8\"><\/div>\n<p>Indeed, many of these protesters are Jewish, a reality that\u2019s very familiar to pro-Israel Jews around the world. One Jewish student protester I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DM1SPHTsdyY&#038;t=1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interviewed<\/a> this week actually expressed frustration with the difficulty of keeping legitimate antisemites out of the encampment. More broadly, though, the rapid proliferation of anti-Western worldviews presents a bigger problem for the country at large than the seriously disturbing but minority outbursts of antisemitism among protesters. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/op-eds\/a-brief-polling-history-on-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minority at least for now<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Different people obviously share different definitions of antisemitism. That\u2019s understandable. Oftentimes anti-Zionism is a mask for genuine antisemitic bigotry. Personally, I detest the left\u2019s argument that, for instance, opposing \u201cequity\u201d is racist. I\u2019m sure a lot of genuine racists oppose the concept but it\u2019s also not particularly helpful to insist a lot of well-intentioned people are bigots instead of ideological opponents of critical race theory. You end up arguing around people\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vaccine-inquisitions-as-covid-vaccination-mandates-increase-religious-exemptions-come-under-fire\/\" title=\"Vaccine Inquisitions? As COVID Vaccination Mandates Increase, Religious Exemptions Come Under Fire\">actual beliefs<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Such is the case with many of these students. It\u2019s entirely fair to argue their activism is enabling and emboldening bigotry. They won\u2019t, however, be persuaded by arguments insisting they are mostly bigots on a personal level because many of them believe deeply that Israel is engaged in a genocidal slaughter.<\/p>\n<p>They believe this because they believe Israel and its allies in the West are broadly evil, poisoned from their very foundations. Some see these systems as morally equal to Hamas, Hezbollah, and the \u201cresistance.\u201d I have good friends who believe this, and I\u2019m sure people younger than me see this worldview reflected in even more of their peers. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e0b0008e4b77502d054ed64a77d4395e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e0b0008e4b77502d054ed64a77d4395e\"><\/div>\n<p>Indeed, on Friday Jonas Du, a student journalist at Columbia and the founder of the excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundial-cu.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Columbia Sundial<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/episode\/a-dispatch-live-from-the-columbia-encampment--59669837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joined<\/a> me on \u201cThe Federalist Radio Hour.\u201d The encampment, he explained, is \u201cvery much about being anti-Western, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-move-to-strip-funding-from-schools-that-use-1619-project\/\" title=\"Republicans Move To Strip Funding From Schools That Use 1619 Project\">anti-capitalist<\/a>, anti-American essentially.\u201d For many of the students, opposition to Israel is seen as a necessary extension of this all-encompassing perspective, said Du.<\/p>\n<p>That ideology reflects a dangerous myopia. Viewed through the full scope of human history, Western pluralism and tolerance is a remarkable achievement made possible, as longtime atheist Ayaan Hirsi Ali recently <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2023\/11\/why-i-am-now-a-christian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">determined<\/a>, by the spread of Christian ideas about protecting the weak and vulnerable. Our societies are far from perfect, but they are relatively incredible and generally superior to the societies of our enemies. Even the limits we\u2019ve agreed upon in the last century to categorize \u201cwar crimes\u201d are inflected by this novel consensus. Even when we fail to live up to those rules, countries like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/thousands-israelis-join-anti-government-protests-calling-new-elections-2024-04-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Israel<\/a> and the U.S. generally allow citizens to protest their leaders vigorously and vote for change. We take it for granted. <\/p>\n<p>A failure to appreciate and guard our political inheritance jealously could well engender a revival of Nietzschean ethics wherein, for example, powerful men are allowed into women\u2019s shelters because they claim to be women on the basis of moral relativism. Or the champions of compassion and tolerance and justice saying things <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/26\/nyregion\/columbia-student-protest-zionism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">like<\/a> \u201cZionists don\u2019t deserve to live\u201d and \u201cBe grateful that I\u2019m not just going out and murdering Zionists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are many reasons to be disturbed by the scenes rolling in from America\u2019s college campuses. Nonviolent speech should not, however, be subjected to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/emilyjashinsky\/status\/1783938667876163712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new<\/a> censorship regimes from Republicans, who also should hardly find civil disobedience objectionable in and of itself. I\u2019m actually glad students are trying to fight for their idea of justice, because it at least accepts the important premise of our values that justice protects the weak. What\u2019s troubling, though, is the extension of reasonable skepticism towards our institutions and recent militarism into categorical hatred of foundational American ideals. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bb4b0c5303b07e7eb400d9d53d43e03f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bb4b0c5303b07e7eb400d9d53d43e03f\"><\/div>\n<p>We know what justice looks like, but we\u2019re at risk of losing any source of agreement on that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4ffccc4aeab355b6039a464291a53c92 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4ffccc4aeab355b6039a464291a53c92\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acknowledging the truths about anti-Israel campus protests is crucial.
