The Wall Street Journal highlighted that menthol\u200c cigarettes constitute about a third of all cigarette sales in the U.S., particularly popular among black consumers. The ban&#8217;s opponents fear\u200d it might drive an increase in illegal market activities.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a> has reportedly canceled a plan to ban menthol cigarettes after his administration feared that banning them could cause black voters to revolt against the president ahead of the upcoming election.<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/biden-administration-shelves-plan-to-ban-menthol-cigarettes-0c41df7a?mod=hp_lead_pos2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that menthols account for roughly a third of all cigarette sales in the U.S. and that black people are overwhelmingly the largest consumers of the product.<\/p>\n<p>Activist groups believe that by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-gops-newest-midterm-issue-menthols\/\" title=\"The GOP\u2019s Newest Midterm Issue: Menthols?\">banning menthol cigarettes<\/a>, there will be an explosion in black market sales of the product, which they claim will lead to racial profiling by law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis rule has garnered historic attention and the public comment period has yielded an immense amount of feedback, including from various elements of the civil rights and criminal justice movement,\u201d said Xavier Becerra, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. \u201cIt\u2019s clear that there are still more conversations to have, and that will take significantly more time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Journal reported that the administration pulled back on its plan as it considered the \u201cpolitical repercussions\u201d of banning the product as Biden is significantly \u201cunderperforming with Black voters, especially Black men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NAACP President Derrick Johnson said the decision by the administration was \u201ca blow to the Black community, who continue to be unfairly targeted and unjustly killed by Big Tobacco. Let\u2019s be clear \u2013 valuing Black lives should not be used as a pawn to get our people to the polls, but rather a platform that our leaders refuse to step down from.
