The move is perceived as a preventative measure to \u200ddiscourage election \u200dtampering and\u2064 promote accountability.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Associated Press (AP) admitted Friday that this week\u2019s indictment of 18 Arizona Republicans is \u201cpart of a campaign\u201d to \u201cdeter\u201d Republicans from raising challenges and concerns about the integrity of the 2024 election. <\/p>\n<p>Democratic Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes indicted 18 individuals, 11 of whom she claims acted illegally when they convened as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/david-brock-launches-dark-money-effort-to-disbar-shame-impoverish-trump-election-lawyers-3\/\" title=\"David Brock Launches 'Dark Money' Effort to Disbar, Shame, Impoverish Trump Election Lawyers\">alternate electors<\/a> to certify the Arizona election in favor of Donald Trump while challenges to the tight election\u2019s initial results were ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Under the headline \u201cCharges against Trump\u2019s 2020 \u2018fake electors\u2019 are expected to deter a repeat this year,\u201d AP\u2019s Nicholas Riccardi <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fake-electors-trump-2020-arizona-indictments-059a719514b0c6cb56f7d7339e87d0d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> the indictment of 18 people \u201ccould help shape the landscape of challenges to the 2024 election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe indictment issued Wednesday is part of a campaign to deter a repeat of 2020, when Trump and his Republican allies falsely claimed he won swing states, filed dozens of lawsuits unsuccessfully challenging Democrat Joe Biden\u2019s victory and tried to get Congress to let Trump stay in power,\u201d Riccardi wrote. <\/p>\n<p>The outlet cited Center for Election Innovation &#038; Research founder David Becker \u2014 whose organization helped dump hundreds of millions of dollars in \u201cZuckbucks\u201d into local election offices to influence election administration \u2014 to emphasize the \u201cdeterrent effect.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are going to have to think twice about doing things to undermine the election,\u201d Becker told the AP. \u201cThe deterrent effect is real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Riccardi also quoted Justin Levitt, a veteran of the left-wing Brennan Center who was <a href=\"https:\/\/publicinterestlegal.org\/press\/pilf-urges-white-house-rescind-appointment-of-justin-levitt-to-senior-policy-advisor-for-democracy-and-voting-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tapped<\/a> as a senior adviser for \u201cdemocracy and voting rights\u201d by the Biden White House in 2021, to cheer the \u201cseverity\u201d of the lawfare being waged against Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that fosters deterrence most is swiftness and severity,\u201d Levitt reportedly said. \u201cThough the wheels of justice are turning slow, they are turning, and we are seeing consequences for the lieutenants in this conspiracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cconspiracy\u201d Mayes has accused 18 Republicans of, however, involves the same kind of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/19\/as-michigan-charges-trump-electors-with-felonies-recall-how-leftists-everywhere-urged-2016-electors-to-defect-to-hillary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electoral disobedience<\/a>\u201d that Democrats have engaged in without consequence in the past.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READNEXT:[READNEXT:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/25\/sotomayor-hijacks-trump-immunity-hearing-to-push-democrats-debunked-fake-electors-smear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sotomayor Hijacks Trump Immunity Hearing To Push Democrats\u2019 Debunked \u2018Fake Electors\u2019 Smear<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After Election Day in 2016, many Democrats sought ways to stop electoral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-continuous-media-covid-fear-mongering-may-backfire-and-diminish-democrat-voter-turnout\/\" title=\"The Continuous Media COVID Fear Mongering May BACKFIRE and Diminish Democrat Voter Turnout\">votes<\/a> from being cast for Trump. The Atlantic \u2014 along with many other Democrats \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2016\/11\/the-electoral-college-was-meant-to-stop-men-like-trump-from-being-president\/508310\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">urged<\/a> electors whose states had voted for Trump to consider contradicting voters and casting their votes for Hillary Clinton instead, because \u201cthe electoral college was meant to stop men like Trump from being president.\u201d The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/the-constitution-lets-the-electoral-college-choose-the-winner-they-should-choose-clinton\/2016\/11\/24\/0f431828-b0f7-11e6-8616-52b15787add0_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> an op-ed by Lawrence Lessig that declared electors should \u201cchoose Clinton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even more analogous to the alternate Trump electors in 2020 was the situation in Hawaii during the 1960 presidential election between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, as noted by The Federalist\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/15\/the-lefts-2020-fake-electors-narrative-is-fake-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Margot Cleveland<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The outcome of Hawaii\u2019s election was debated for weeks, and even though the acting governor certified the election in Nixon\u2019s favor in late November 1960, Democrats challenged the result. In December, both Democrat electors for Kennedy and Republican electors for Nixon cast separate votes for their respective candidates. Eventually, a judge determined Kennedy had won the election.
