Defense attorney Emil Bove questioned\u2062 the tabloid&#8217;s\u2064 practices \u2062prior to a\u2062 2015 \u2064meeting\u2064 with Trump, challenging the prosecution&#8217;s narrative.\u2063 The \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/austin-approves-changes-to-classified-information-handling-following-leaks\/\" title=\"Austin has approved changes to how classified information is handled after leaks.\">defense aims<\/a> to\u2063 undermine the prosecution&#8217;s argument of \u200da unique deal with Pecker.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The New York\u00a0criminal hush money trial against former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/author\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> resumed Friday with the cross-examination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/2973520\/who-is-david-pecker-media-mogul-reported-to-be-first-testimony-in-trump-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Pecker<\/a>,\u00a0the former publisher of the <em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/national-enquirer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Enquirer<\/a><\/em><\/em>, as defense attorney Emil Bove attempted to dismantle the prosecution\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p>Under questioning from Bove on Friday, Pecker acknowledged his tabloid had already been running negative articles about Hillary Clinton, who would become the Democratic nominee for president against Trump in 2016, before he agreed to help Trump suppress stories. Prosecutors want the 12-member jury to view Pecker\u2019s conduct in running negative stories on Trump\u2019s political opponents, while silencing negative press about the then-presidential candidate, as a unique pattern that proves Trump sought his services to influence the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>But Pecker admitted Friday that running negative stories about Trump\u2019s political foes was a practice he engaged in well before a 2015 meeting with Trump and Trump\u2019s former attorney Michael Cohen, which the prosecution says marked the beginning of a \u201ccatch-and-kill\u201d scheme to avoid \u201cembarrassment\u201d by the Trump 2016 campaign.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>(Associated Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBefore the August 2015 meeting, the <em>National Enquirer<\/em> was already running negative articles about Bill and Hillary Clinton, right?\u201d defense attorney Bove asked Pecker, according to press reports. Pecker responded, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors objected after Bove asked Pecker if the practice was \u201cmutually beneficial,\u201d which trial Judge Juan Merchan allowed it to be sustained.<\/p>\n<p>Bove also pointed out that negative articles Pecker\u2019s publication ran about Trump\u2019s Republican rivals in the primary race at the time, such as Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Dr. Ben Carson, relied on information that was recycled from other news outlets.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Trump&#8217;s lawyer Bove: Because it was cost efficient, you would have run those articles whether or not you discussed it with President Trump, right?<br \/>Pecker: Correct.<br \/>Bove: This malpractice allegations against Dr. Carson<br \/>[Below, from exhibits] <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PvHcWpNgGX\">pic.twitter.com\/PvHcWpNgGX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Inner City Press (@innercitypress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/innercitypress\/status\/1783857811836781004?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 26, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The defense attorney asked Pecker if recycling that material was \u201ccost-efficient and made business sense,\u201d which Pecker acknowledged was the case.<\/p>\n<p>Pecker also affirmed that he would have run a fake story about a child Trump allegedly had with another woman out of wedlock if it turned out to be true, an effort that seemed to dispel prosecutors\u2019 notion that Pecker was operating entirely for Trump\u2019s personal gain.<\/p>\n<p>The line of questioning by Trump\u2019s attorney may seek to undermine prosecutors\u2019 argument that Pecker\u2019s deal with Trump to silence his bad press and elevate his opponents\u2019 was unique.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has charged Trump with 34 counts under New York Penal Law Section 175.10, falsifying business records in the first degree, for an alleged effort to cover up a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels after she threatened to come forward about an alleged affair with Trump, which he denies. Falsification alone is a misdemeanor under Section 175.05, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/radical-cultural-change-coming-to-america\/\" title=\"Radical Cultural Change Coming to America?\">district attorney<\/a>, an elected Democrat, has boosted the charge to a felony by alleging Trump falsified the records with the \u201cintent to commit another crime and aid and conceal the commission thereof.\u201d Trump is not charged with any additional crimes, however, and has pleaded not guilty to the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>Legal experts have largely described Bragg\u2019s approach as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-demand-testimony-from-former-prosecutor-who-called-for-trump-charges\/\" title=\"House Republicans Demand Testimony From Former Prosecutor Who Called for Trump Charges\">untested legal theory<\/a>, and part of the defense\u2019s strategy is to create the notion that the meetings with Trump, his ex-lawyer, and Pecker were run-of-the-mill negotiations that countless celebrities have engaged in in years past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs anticipated, Bove took great care to work through inconsistencies in Pecker\u2019s testimony,\u201d legal analyst and corporate general counsel Alton Harmon told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-demands-biden-admin-commit-to-sanctions-on-iranian-human-rights-abuses\/\" title=\"GOP Demands Biden Admin Commit to Sanctions on Iranian Human Rights Abuses\">week sought<\/a> to show Cohen and Pecker\u2019s alleged \u201ccatch and kill\u201d scheme was done with the intent of preventing the emergence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2976174\/trump-trial-witness-recounts-frantic-efforts-kill-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"anything damaging or \u201cembarrassing\u201d\">anything damaging or \u201cembarrassing\u201d<\/a> to the then-candidate\u2019s 2016 campaign. <\/p>\n<p>Bove\u2019s cross-examination has so far revealed Pecker made shady deals with other politicians and celebrities, ranging from Mark Wahlberg and Tiger Woods to Arnold Schwarzenegger when he ran for governor of California and Rahm Emanual while running for mayor Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Harmon said he believes Bove\u2019s strategy was an attempt to \u201censure the jury ends its Friday thinking that Pecker\u2019s acts had nothing to do with election interference but were par for the course in the tabloid industry and were a part of AMI\/<em>National Enquirer\u2019s<\/em> \u2018standard operating procedures.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the defense may have hit something of a snag in their approach Friday afternoon after Pecker admitted that out of the \u201chundreds of thousands\u201d of nondisclosure agreements executed by his tabloid magazines, Trump was the only presidential candidate he ever helped out in such a manner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only one,\u201d Pecker <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KatiePhang\/status\/1783902428301025611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York trial of former President Donald Trump for hush money charges resumed.
