The act aims to address antisemitism and provide transparency through quarterly reports and policy\u2064 recommendations.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A pair of <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a> lawmakers introduced a bill on Friday to impose a third-party <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>antisemitism<\/a> monitor at universities and colleges following the pro-Palestinian demonstrations at <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/columbia-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Columbia University<\/a> that created a \u201chostile\u201d environment for <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jewish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Jewish<\/a> students.<\/p>\n<p>Reps. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) and Mike Lawler (R-NY) are sponsoring the College Oversight and Legal Updates Mandating Bias Investigations and Accountability, or COLUMBIA, Act that would impose third-party antisemitism monitors at collegiate institutions that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mayo-clinic-debuts-woke-policies-including-wearable-pronoun-buttons\/\" title=\"Mayo Clinic Debuts Woke Policies Including Wearable Pronoun Buttons\">receive federal funding<\/a>. The monitor and its terms and conditions would be imposed by the education secretary, and the expenses to pay for the monitor would fall on the college or university selected.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to comply with the monitorship would result in the loss of federal funds, according to a press release from Torres\u2019s office. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis past week\u2019s crisis at Columbia is not an isolated incident \u2014 it is the straw that has broken the camel\u2019s back \u2014 and I am prepared to do something about it,\u201d Torres said in a statement. \u201cThat\u2019s why I am introducing the COLUMBIA Act today, and I urge all of my colleagues in the House, from both parties, to join me in this crucial action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The monitor would release a publicly available online quarterly report that would evaluate the progress that a college or university has made toward combating antisemitism on campus. It would also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bill-de-blasio-establishes-racial-justice-commission-stocked-with-aides-and-allies\/\" title=\"Bill De Blasio Establishes \u2018Racial Justice\u2019 Commission Stocked With Aides And Allies\">make policy recommendations<\/a> to Congress, the education secretary, and state and local regulators as needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJewish students have told my office that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/social-security-update-second-round-of-direct-payments-worth-up-to-4555-arrives-in-two-days\/\" title=\"Social Security update: ,555 direct payments coming in two days.\">feel completely abandoned<\/a> by their university administrators and they view Congress as the only avenue for accountability and safety. Let\u2019s honor our word to them and get this done,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation comes after several New York Democrats and Republicans visited Columbia University this week as clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protesters led to President Minouche Shafik\u00a0announcing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/education\/2973827\/columbia-president-makes-classes-virtual-intimidating-harassing-behavior-pro-palestinian-protesters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shift to virtual classes <\/a>on Monday, the beginning of Passover, due to the high levels of campus unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Several New York Republicans, as well as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), called for Shafik to step down while speaking to reporters on the steps of the university on Wednesday. If colleges will not step up to protect their students, Congress must act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House Rules Committee is planning to meet on Monday to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2980101\/house-plans-vote-campus-antisemitism-bill-protests-spread\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"take up a vote\">take up a vote<\/a> on the Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023, which was introduced by Lawler.
