Jake Hoffman and Anthony Kern and state Republican National Committee member Tyler Bowyer.\u00a0 They are all listed as those who sought to be alternative Republican electors in the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/04\/24\/arizona-fake-electors-indictments\/73184206007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Arizona Republic<\/a> reported that the names of defendants redacted from the document were believed to be \u201cTrump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman, former chief of staff Mark Meadows, lawyers Jenna Ellis and Christina Bobb, and Trump advisers Boris Epshteyn and Michael Roman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump himself is listed as \u201cUnindicted Coconspirator 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The indictment reads, in reference to Democrat Joe Biden\u2019s narrow win in the 2020 election, \u201cDefendants and unindicted coconspirators schemed to prevent the lawful transfer of the presidency to keep Unindicted Coconspirator 1 in office against the will of Arizona\u2019s voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the general election on November 3, 2020, Defendants raised false claims of widespread election fraud in Arizona to pressure election officials to change the outcome of a democratic election,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>Biden carried Arizona by just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/11\/03\/us\/elections\/results-arizona.html#:~:text=Joseph%20R.-,Biden%20Jr.,Race%20called%20by%20Edison%20Research.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10,457 votes<\/a>, his narrowest win in the nation. Trump had won the Grand Canyon State in 2016 over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/2016\/results\/arizona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">91,200<\/a> votes.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the alternate electors, the indictment alleges that they sought to deceive Arizonans by falsely claiming their \u201cvotes were contingent only on a legal challenge that would change the outcome of the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are these indictments politically motivated?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In reality, according to prosecutors, they wanted Vice President Mike Pence, in his role as president of the Senate during the Electoral College vote count on Jan. 6, 2021, to either declare that Trump won Arizona or send the issue of certification back to state Legislature for further review.<\/p>\n<p>Then-Gov. Doug Ducey and then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs \u2014 a Republican and a Democrat, respectively \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/azmirror.com\/2022\/12\/05\/hobbs-and-ducey-certified-arizonas-2022-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certified<\/a> Biden the winner in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In a video statement posted on Wednesday, Mayes said regarding the criminal cases, \u201cI understand for some of you today didn\u2019t come fast enough, and I know I\u2019ll be criticized by others for conducting this investigation at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as I have stated before and will say here again today, I will not allow American democracy to be undermined. It\u2019s too important,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re here because justice demands an answer to the efforts that the defendants and other unindicted co-conspirators allegedly took to undermine the will of Arizona\u2019s voters during the 2020 presidential election,\u201d Mayes said.<\/p>\n<p>She asserted that \u201cArizona\u2019s election was free and fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A state grand jury, made up of everyday, regular Arizonans, has handed down felony indictments in the ongoing investigation into the fake elector scheme in Arizona. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Nu8GcD4ZqJ\">pic.twitter.com\/Nu8GcD4ZqJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 AZ Attorney General Kris Mayes (@AZAGMayes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AZAGMayes\/status\/1783271748882039054?\">April 24, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>An April 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/az-ag-releases-report-finding-fraud-problems-handling-100k-mail-ballots-maricopa-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> released by then-Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, found that there were \u201cproblematic system-wide issues that relate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-ag-report-2020-election-fraud-in-maricopa-county-raises-questions-about-outcome\/\" title=\"Arizona AG Report: 2020 Election Fraud in Maricopa County \u201cRaises Questions\u201d About Outcome\u00a0\">early ballot handling<\/a> and verification\u201d in Maricopa County, which includes the Phoenix metro area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur review uncovered multiple violations of ballot transportation procedures,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-becomes-first-state-to-sue-biden-over-vaccine-mandates\/\" title=\"Arizona Becomes First State To Sue Biden Over Vaccine Mandates\">attorney general wrote<\/a>. \u201cSpecially, our investigation confirmed that out of 1,895 Early Voting Ballot Transportation Statements, 381 forms or 20 percent were missing required information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, it is possible that somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 ballots were transported without proper chain of custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brnovich also highlighted that Maricopa County had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/us-rep-enters-az-audit-fight-maricopa-county-demands-truth-mysteriously-archived-files\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not been forthcoming<\/a> in turning over all the materials related to the 2020 general election that the AG\u2019s Election Integrity Office had sought despite multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azag.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/press-releases\/2021\/letters\/210927_Letter_to_Maricopa_County_re_Litigation_Hold.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requests<\/a> beginning in September 2021 after the Arizona Senate concluded its audit.<\/p>\n<p>He said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azag.gov\/press-release\/attorney-general-mark-brnovich-requests-additional-information-2020-general-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> that month that the audit raised \u201csome serious questions regarding the 2020 election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In February 2023, shortly after she took office, Mayes accused Brnovich of suppressing internal findings of his department that investigators did not find that widespread fraud occurred in the 2020 election, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mark-brnovich-arizona-attorney-general-report-showing-no-fraud-withheld-kris-mayes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ten thousand plus hours spent diligently investigating every conspiracy theory under the sun distracted this office from its core mission of protecting the people of Arizona from real crime and fraud,\u201d Mayes said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azag.gov\/press-release\/arizona-attorney-generals-office-releases-documents-related-2020-election-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Brnovich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2023\/02\/22\/arizona-ag-kris-mayes-unveils-previously-unreleased-2020-election-investigation-documents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Arizona CBS affiliate KPHO-TV in response, \u201cWe did our due diligence to run all complaints to ground. Where we were able to debunk rumors and conspiracies, we did so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further highlighted that his office \u201cidentified problem areas that the state Legislature and Maricopa County officials should address,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>Former Maricopa County prosecutor Rachel Alexander wrote Wednesday in <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonasuntimes.com\/elections\/election-integrity\/arizona-a-g-kris-mayes-secures-indictments-of-alternate-electors-for-donald-trump-and-others-likely-soon-to-be-named-including-john-eastman-rudy-giuliani-with-trump-himself-an-unindicted-co-conspir\/ralexander\/2024\/04\/24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Arizona Sun Times<\/a> that alternate electors were chosen in the 1960 presidential election between Democrat John Kennedy and Republican Richard Nixon when there was a dispute over who won Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>Nixon was initially reported as the winner. Democrats chose a second slate of electors and challenged the election results. A recount was conducted, flipping the state to Kennedy.
