Wade Is Overturned\">national abortion ban<\/a> and supports exceptions for rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at stake. The messaging has been exactly what top officials at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nrsc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>National Republican Senatorial Committee<\/a> have been encouraging Republican candidates to embrace for months. Now, many GOP candidates are backing away from their previously strict anti-abortion stances.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/25\/trump-abortion-polling-00154213?nname=playbook&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&#038;nrid=68612869-219e-4598-998c-18bb7c1f30b7&#038;nlid=630318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a> from <em>Politico<\/em>-Morning Consult<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/2978974\/trump-stakes-out-popular-position-republicans-try-navigate-abortion-politics-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> found<\/a> that three-fifths of Republicans support leaving abortion to the states, though the share jumped to three-fourths when told that it was Trump\u2019s stated position. The share of independents who support the position also jumped from 47% to 51% when told it was Trump\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p>The shift comes as Democrats have repeatedly won elections across the country by embracing their support for abortion rights in the months since the Supreme Court overturned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Arizona Republican Senate hopeful Kari Lake has reshaped her stance; she called abortion \u201cexecution\u201d during her failed 2022 gubernatorial run. After the Arizona Supreme Court upheld a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2959358\/arizona-supreme-court-upholds-civil-war-era-abortion-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>19th-century restriction on abortion<\/a>, Lake came out against the ruling, which Arizona lawmakers currently are working to repeal before enforcement of the near<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/all-lives-matter-arkansas-gov-signs-near-total-abortion-ban-that-supporters-hope-will-force-scotus-to-revisit-roe-v-wade\/\" title=\"\u2018All Lives Matter\u2019: Arkansas Gov. Signs Near-Total Abortion Ban That Supporters Hope Will Force SCOTUS To Revisit Roe v. Wade\">-total abortion ban<\/a> can begin. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at where the population is on this, a full ban on abortion is not where the people are,\u201d Lake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vPl_hyizHMU\">said<\/a> in a social media video that she posted, in which she\u2019s shown speaking over dramatic instrumentals and images of women and pregnancy tests. However, she had previously praised the law, known as ARS 13-3603.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m incredibly thrilled that we are going to have a great law that\u2019s already on the books,\u201d Lake <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/c02598432\/220624-conservative-circus\/s-T7nYXIPhaXt?si=183692ecb043435d9d8b9ceacc86479b&#038;utm_source=clipboard&#038;utm_medium=text&#038;utm_campaign=social_sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said on a conservative radio show in 2022.<\/a> \u201cI believe it\u2019s ARS 13-3603, so it will prohibit abortion in Arizona, except to save the life of a mother. And I think we\u2019re going to be paving the way and setting course for other states to follow.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cArizona\u2019s law currently allows abortions up to 15 weeks, and Kari does not support a federal ban on abortion. Abortion is, as the courts decided, an issue for states to decide, not the federal government,\u201d Lake\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/karilake.com\/issues\/abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>website<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKari has made her stance quite clear: She is pro-life but doesn\u2019t believe in a federal abortion ban. Her focus is saving babies and providing resources for women,\u201d a Lake campaign spokesman said in a statement provided to the <em>Washington Examiner.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>In Nevada, GOP Senate candidate Sam Brown\u2019s position has shifted since he first ran for a seat in the Texas legislature in 2014. He <a href=\"https:\/\/thenevadaindependent.com\/article\/gop-senate-candidate-sam-brown-once-supported-20-week-abortion-ban-is-now-less-specific\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>had opposed<\/a> exceptions for rape and incest in the past but has changed his views and is now embracing them. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S_w2utq3SI0&#038;t=3207s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>previously backed<\/a> a 20-week ban in Texas and now said he would not impose that in Nevada. <\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/sam-amy-brown-abortion-nevada-gop-republican-senate-race-rcna136826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>NBC News<\/a> in February, he and his wife revealed that she had an abortion before they met. In the same interview, Brown embraced Nevada\u2019s state law, which allows abortions up to 24 weeks, and he emphasized that states should be allowed to set their own standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmy and I have spoken extensively about this topic and believe, first and foremost, that mothers who are facing an unplanned pregnancy deserve the utmost compassion and understanding,\u201d Brown said in a statement provided to<em> <\/em>the <em>Washington Examiner. <\/em>\u201cI am pro-life, with the exception of rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Like President Trump, I believe the issue is now correctly left at the state level and applaud his leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who is running for reelection in Florida, had previously vowed to sign a six-week abortion ban into law as governor. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/maevemcoyle\/status\/1780390230333280696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>interview <\/a>with Spectrum News two weeks ago, Scott reaffirmed those previous statements. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I was the sitting governor, and the six-week abortion ban came in front of me, I would sign it. I\u2019ve always said I would sign it,\u201d he said in the interview. <\/p>\n<p>Now that Florida has allowed a six-week ban to take effect in May, Scott has said he believes there should be a 15-week limit after studying information from polls and focus groups. The Florida senator has recently endorsed Trump\u2019s stance, and agrees that the issue should be left to the states to decide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ought to be where the consensus is,\u201d Scott said,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2024\/apr\/24\/republicans-pivot-on-abortion-in-key-senate-races-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> speaking <\/a>to the <em>Washington Times.<\/em> \u201cIn my state, that consensus is 15 weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a former member of Congress, Mike Rogers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/politics\/2010\/10\/where_michigan_congress_hopefu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said <\/a>he only supported abortions \u201cto prevent the death of the mother.\u201d As a member of the House from 2001 to 2015, Rogers co-sponsored four different fetal personhood bills that would completely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-steve-daines-supreme-court-has-opportunity-to-defend-most-fundamental-right-the-right-to-life\/\" title=\"Sen. Steve Daines: \u2018Supreme Court Has Opportunity to Defend Most Fundamental Right\u2014the Right to Life\u2019\">ban abortion nationwide<\/a>: in 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2013.<\/p>\n<p>However, now as a candidate for Senate in Michigan, Rogers has shifted his stance after announcing his campaign for Senate.\u00a0He has pledged not to support federal laws that limit abortion if they do not align with Michigan\u2019s law, which currently allows the procedure up to 24 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In Pennsylvania, Dave McCormick had <a href=\"https:\/\/penncapital-star.com\/election-2024\/on-the-issues-casey-and-mccormick-call-each-others-abortion-views-extreme\/#:~:text=The%20moderator%20asked%20McCormick%20again,opinion%20draft%20overturning%20Roe%20v.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>previously<\/a> said he only supported limited exceptions for abortion and said in April 2022 that in \u201cvery rare instances there should be exceptions for the life of the mother.\u201d On his campaign website at the time, he wrote that he is \u201cstaunchly pro-life and believes that life begins at conception.\u201d However, his campaign has recently clarified his stance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDave recognizes that this is an incredibly polarizing issue and we need to seek policies that unify the country. Dave is pro-life, is opposed to a national abortion ban, and supports exceptions in the cases of rape, incest, and saving the life of the mother,\u201d a spokeswoman for McCormick\u2019s campaign said in a statement. \u201cIn Pennsylvania, the current law, supported by both Republicans and Democrats, means abortion is legal through 24 weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Wisconsin, Eric Hovde had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/04\/04\/eric-hovde-says-he-backs-a-right-to-make-a-choice-early-in-pregnancy\/73207427007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"previously said \">previously said <\/a>he was \u201ctotally opposed to abortion\u201d when he was running for Senate in the primary in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>After he announced his campaign for Senate in February,\u00a0Hovde had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/politifactwisconsin\/2024\/02\/21\/eric-hovde-says-voters-should-decide-abortion-supports-exceptions-politifact-wisconsin\/72691409007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"an updated stance\">an updated stance<\/a> on abortion which included exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother and that abortion policy should be left to state voters.  <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has made it clear they will continue to target Senate Republican hopefuls over this issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn record and on video, Republican Senate candidates have already made it clear they oppose women\u2019s right to make their own healthcare decisions and stand in lockstep with their party\u2019s agenda to ban abortion nationwide and without exceptions,\u201d said DSCC spokesman Tommy Garcia in a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner. <\/em>\u201cVoters will hold GOP Senate candidates accountable for their well-documented records.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In vital 2024 battleground states, select Senate GOP candidates are adjusting their views on abortion to counter Democrats&#8217; past gains and echo ex-President Trump&#8217;s messaging.
