Selective breeding in IVF raises ethical concerns similar to historical eugenic principles.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2024\/02\/19\/alabama-supreme-court-rules-frozen-embryos-are-unborn-children\/\">The Alabama Supreme Court\u2019s recent and right decision<\/a> to deem embryos created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) as people sparked concern from fertility facilities regarding the future of IVF. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/03\/06\/1235907160\/alabama-lawmakers-pass-ivf-immunity-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This concern resulted<\/a> in Alabama rushing to pass legislation to preserve IVF, with a push from President Trump urging Alabama to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/23\/politics\/trump-alabama-ivf-ruling\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">act quickly to find an immediate solution<\/a>.\u201d This bill, signed by Republican Gov. Kay Ivey, grants immunity from legal consequences to those providing and receiving services if embryos are damaged or destroyed during the procedure. Despite this legislation, there are still fears surrounding the future of IVF.<\/p>\n<p>Since Alabama claimed that the accidental death of three couples\u2019 frozen embryos<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-00830-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> qualified under the Wrongful Death of a Minor Act, p<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-00830-1\">hysicians<\/a> have been \u201c\u2026worried that officials might cap the number of embryos that can be created in each treatment cycle, which often entails the fertilization of several eggs, [and that] lawmakers could also ban the freezing of backup embryos, which \u2026 would result in less efficient and more expensive treatments.\u201d There are also concerns about further limitations on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/byron-donalds-wants-gop-to-follow-trumps-lead-on-ivf-but-south-carolina-voters-arent-so-sure\/\" title=\"Byron Donalds urges GOP to emulate Trump on IVF, but SC voters skeptical\">embryonic research<\/a>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-66842113\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-73172795e5447fa5f9fca8202b840a20 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-73172795e5447fa5f9fca8202b840a20\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eliminating \u2018Defective\u2019 Children<\/h2>\n<p>What these concerns have in common is that this ruling forces society to rise above past eugenic practices that we are, apparently, not ready to abandon. If states further enforced restrictions on IVF, embryos would no longer be non-person, commodifiable objects society can do with as it pleases, as was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/european-history\/eugenics\">prevalent in Greek and Roman cultures<\/a> long before the term \u201ceugenics\u201d was invented and widely practiced across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>The IVF process often involves the <a href=\"https:\/\/fertility.womenandinfants.org\/treatment\/preimplantation-genetic-testing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preimplantation screening of blastocysts<\/a> (early embryos) to determine the likelihood of implantation success and test for genetic defects. Those considered \u201cnon-viable\u201d are discarded. This eugenic practice opens the door to the elimination of \u201cdefective\u201d children, as those utilizing preimplantation screenings with the hope of producing only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/walsh-kids-are-struggling-to-focus-during-online-school-now-theyre-being-diagnosed-with-adhd-this-is-cruel\/\" title=\"WALSH: Kids Are Struggling To Focus During Online School. Now They\u2019re Being Diagnosed With ADHD. This Is Cruel.\">perfectly healthy children<\/a> may be more inclined to choose selective reduction as well. <\/p>\n<p>Selective reduction (abortion) commences with the<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/tog.12690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> injection of potassium chloride<\/a> into the heart of the unlucky fetus, which stops the small heart from beating. In instances where babies share the same amniotic sac, more inhumane techniques are used such as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.4274\/jtgga.galenos.2018.2018.0052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bipolar cord coagulation and radiofrequency ablation<\/a>, which cut off umbilical cord supply, thus starving the baby of oxygen and nutrients. In ancient Rome, this dehumanization of children can be described by a quote from the philosopher <a href=\"https:\/\/praxeology.net\/seneca2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seneca in the first century CE<\/a>: \u201c\u2026unnatural progeny we destroy; we drown even children who at birth are weakly and abnormal.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1377679\/?page=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Similarly, in ancient Greece<\/a>, abortion was encouraged to limit the number of children in families, as was infanticide for babies born with deformities. The Spartan society highly valued marriages that would strengthen the genetic excellence of the population, and therefore partners were selected based <a href=\"https:\/\/wechronicle.com\/family\/exploring-marriage-customs-in-ancient-greek-sparta-military-influence-and-eugenics\/#:~:text=Eugenics%20was%20a%20controversial%20practice%20in%20ancient%20Greek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on traits such as physical fitness<\/a>. The government would even intervene and arrange marriages or force divorces if the couples were judged unfit for each other and thereby incapable of producing strong offspring.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8c4ed51c04e5af2501b2d685c89eac65 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8c4ed51c04e5af2501b2d685c89eac65\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Build-a-Child Mindset<\/h2>\n<p>How does the IVF process encourage this type of \u201cselective breeding\u201d? Well, besides selective reduction, reproductive technologies such as IVF often include gamete donation. With gamete donation, people can choose from a catalog of donors and pick certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattlespermbank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SSB-Donor-Catalog-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">physical and intellectual characteristics<\/a>. Gamete donors must meet certain requirements, such as certain physical and intellectual characteristics, a certain ethnicity, a certain height, \u201cgood genes,\u201d physical attractiveness, and good health to weed out any \u201cundesirable\u201d traits. <\/p>\n<p>The IVF process often involves the eugenic practice of creating designer babies based on intelligence, hair color, eye color, etc., through gamete donation. Dave Rubin <a href=\"https:\/\/salvomag.com\/article\/salvo64\/weird-gestations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compared<\/a> the process of picking an egg donor to being \u201clike Tinder,\u201d and went through the site searching for a physically healthy donor who didn\u2019t have major genetic issues and \u201csort of looked like the type of girl they might be with,\u201d showing the build-a-child manufacturing mindset involved in the gamete donor process that diminishes children to mere products.<\/p>\n<p>Further, since unique human beings come into existence upon fertilization, the sex of the persons fashioned through IVF can also be determined before implantation. This allows those pursuing the IVF process to choose the sex they want to be transferred and, therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnyfertility.com\/gender-selection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">choose which of their children gets to be transferred based on their sex<\/a>. What could better demonstrate that you consider all of your children potentially disposable than saying that one of them isn\u2019t the \u201cright\u201d sex?<\/p>\n<p>When IVF facilities can no longer create multiple embryonic persons with which to experiment and <a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.com\/ivf-harms-to-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">play trial and error through the transfer process<\/a>, or can no longer indefinitely freeze as human icicles, or donate to scientific research where they will be destroyed, they are forced to face the reality that embryos are persons.
