The US Navy&#8217;s transformation of oil rigs into mobile military bases, featuring missile\u200d defense capabilities surpassing \u200bdestroyer capacity, marks a \u2064strategic move to bolster\u200d defense in the Pacific. \u200bThe groundbreaking project, MODEP, created \u2062by Gibbs &#038; Cox, not\u200b only provides cost-effective solutions but also strategic benefits amidst escalating tensions with China.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>  <\/p>\n<h2>US Navy Converting Oil Rigs Into Active Missile Launch Stations with Five Times the Capacity of a Destroyer<\/h2>\n<p> <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/%20\"><span>Samuel Short<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   April 25, 2024 at 4:51pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>In the wake of Congress\u2019 newest $95 billion spending package for foreign aid, the U.S. Navy has chosen to employ new methods of countering China in the Pacific, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedefensepost.com\/2024\/04\/23\/us-navy-mobile-bases\/?expand_article=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Defense Post<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/democrats-make-unprecedented-move-save-mike-johnsons-foreign-aid-package-thwarting-conservative-objectors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spending package<\/a> includes $8.1 billion for Taiwan and nations in the Pacific, the Navy plans to convert surplus oil rigs into mobile military bases. These bases will serve as resupply depots for vessels and will also act as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/army-releases-woke-cartoon-recruitment-ad-after-woke-cia-ads-mocked\/\" title=\"Army Releases Woke Cartoon Recruitment Ad After Woke CIA Ads Mocked\">missile defense systems<\/a>, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>The project, known as the Mobile Defense\/Depot Platform or MODEP, was developed by naval architecture firm Gibbs &#038; Cox, which said these bases can carry 512 vertical launch system cells or 100 large missile launchers. That amounts to five times what a Navy destroyer can carry.<\/p>\n<p>The concept for MODEP was unveiled in early April at the Sea Air Space Expo in National Harbor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/maryland-vs-michigan-womens-basketball-game-turns-violent-punches-lead-ejections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hvXU7Ow9OwY?si=hDn47OUWjQPzCnUn\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>David Zook, solutions architect and combat systems department manager for Gibbs &#038; Cox, told Naval News, \u201cOur target here is to find a solution to help the challenging problem of having capacity issues in the Western Pacific. For not enough cells, not enough missiles, not enough of being able to keep those ships in the forward station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Navy official emphasized the benefits of MODEP, saying the system presents a \u201csubstantial reduction in risks and costs associated with land-based defense systems,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/military\/from-oil-rig-to-ocean-fortress-us-navy-to-repurpose-oil-rigs-for-mobile-defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interesting Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cost was certainly accounted for in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/worst-detail-navys-embarrassing-photo-not-backward-scope-horrible-shooting-stance-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Navy<\/a>\u2018s decision to go with the MODEP.<\/p>\n<p>The price tag is one-tenth that of creating a new missile defense system.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is it a good idea to convert oil rigs into military platforms?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While this is a recent development for the Navy, work has been done in years past to examine the supposed benefits of the system.<\/p>\n<p>A 2018 study identified potential vulnerabilities in these types of installations and found them ineffective, compared to traditional on-ground options.<\/p>\n<p>While MODEP is an innovative and novel concept, the underlying intent is still worrying.<\/p>\n<p>As previously mentioned, MODEP has been adopted with China in mind.<\/p>\n<p>During his recent trip to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-gun-control-activist-david-hogg-torched-ccp-survivor-go-china-see-gun-control-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> China<\/a>, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was told by Chinese Communist Party leader Chen Jining, \u201cWhether China and the U.S. choose cooperation or confrontation, it affects the wellbeing of both peoples, of nations and also the future of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chen made clear where this relationship could go, with war not being out of the question.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ef9d2f6f-3ef6-4249-af0c-649583e0ee43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Financial Times reported<\/a> Blinken was expected to tell the Chinese to stop supporting Russia\u2019s efforts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-top-democrat-chuck-schumer-cheers-mike-johnson-thanks-pushing-ukraine-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> or punitive measures will be taken.<\/p>\n<p>With Blinken\u2019s efforts in mind and the massive newly approved spending package, MODEP\u2019s introduction in the Pacific suggests the U.S. is planning for the worst.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
