The incident sparked mixed reactions, with some perceiving it as a lighthearted moment \u200bwhile others viewed it as emblematic of entrenched misogyny within Christianity.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some people were outraged when at a Boston, Massachusetts, Episcopal church hosting an Easter vigil emceed by a drag queen, the Episcopal bishop of the church jokingly <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/25\/us-news\/boston-episcopal-bishop-alan-gates-rips-collar-off-female-cleric-during-easter-vigil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed the collar<\/a> of a female reverend who forgot where she was during the eucharistic prayer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bishop Alan M. Gates\u00a0removed the collar from the neck of Rev. Tamara Tucker, the priest for The Crossing, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrossingboston.org\/\">states<\/a> it is a ministry \u201cproviding a welcoming worship space for LGBTQIA+ folks\u201d at The Cathedral Church of St. Paul on March 30.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cVery simply, we\u2019re going to allow somebody to take their own piece of bread, the small piece of bread, and you will say to the person taking the bread,\u201d Tucker said, then paused before continuing, \u201cWait, what is it, I\u2019ve been gone for a while,\u201d as the congregation laughed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Body of Christ,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt\u2019s very simple, the Body of Christ, that\u2019s it, that\u2019s all you got to do. And then when they take the cup, you\u2019ll pass it to them the Love of Christ, or the Blood of Christ, whichever is more comfortable to you. Can we do that? If I can do that after three months, I think we can. We got this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At that point, Gates walked over and removed the white, plastic insert as the congregation laughed. Rita Powell, the chaplain for the\u00a0Harvard Episcopal Community, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/04\/24\/metro\/episcopal-bishop-apology-female-clergy-collar\/?event=event12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Boston Globe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI know Bishop Gates didn\u2019t think of it that way in his intention,\u201d Powell added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gates ultimately released an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diomass.org\/news\/diocesan-news\/statement-apology-bishop-gates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apology<\/a>, writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Dear colleagues and siblings in Christ,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>I write to share my remorse and deep apology for an action by which I have caused deep pain and hurt. \u2026 In an instant of altogether misguided mischief, I reached out and removed Rev. Tamra\u2019s clerical collar. It was a devastating and demeaning act, which I regret with all my heart.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Rev. Tamra Tucker is a valued colleague and fine priest whose leadership it has been my honor to affirm. It was not and would never be my intent to humiliate Rev. Tamra; however, that was precisely the impact of my action. Furthermore, that hurt has extended to The Crossing community, whose pastor I disrespected, as well as others who were present or have subsequently learned of this incident and its impact. By my action I misused my authority, failed to extend episcopal grace, and transgressed personal space and boundaries. I am deeply sorry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I extend my remorse and apology to the Rev. Tamra Tucker; to the Crossing community; to the Cathedral community; to other communities present; to ecumenical companions who had joined us at the Vigil; and to those in the wider church and community whom I have hurt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In our baptismal covenant we pledge to \u201crespect the dignity of every human being.\u201d I seek forgiveness for my failure to keep this pledge, and God\u2019s grace to renew that commitment.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a Boston, Massachusetts Episcopal church&#8217;s Easter vigil emceed by a drag queen, Bishop Alan M.
