The pamphlet, &#8220;First We Take Columbia,&#8221; was anonymously\u2063 authored and published in dissident magazine &#8220;Ill Will.&#8221; It sparks nationwide occupations, echoing events from 1968. The\u2064 document emphasizes disruption, spreading\u2062 occupations for impact, drawing inspiration from past movements for\u2063 change.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Pro-<a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/palestinians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Palestinian<\/a> protesters at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/columbia-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Columbia University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/yale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Yale University<\/a> are circulating a guidebook to activists across the country encouraging more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>occupations<\/a> and teaching them how to be successful.<\/p>\n<p>The pamphlet, titled \u201cFirst We Take Columbia: Lessons from the April 1968 Occupations Movement,\u201d was anonymously written by protesters at the Columbia and Yale encampments and <a href=\"https:\/\/illwill.com\/columbia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>published<\/a> in left-wing dissident magazine <em>Ill Will<\/em> on Saturday. It was distributed by hand at the Columbia encampment on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Since its distribution, occupations have popped up at a growing number of universities across the country, including most recently George Washington University in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Washington, D.C.\">Washington, D.C.<\/a> The pamphlet is available in English, French, Turkish, Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you seize a town, a campus, get hold of the power stations, the water, the transportation, forget to negotiate, forget how to negotiate, don\u2019t wait for De Gaulle or Kirk to abdicate, they won\u2019t, you are not \u2018demonstrating\u2019 you are fighting a war, fight to win, don\u2019t wait for Johnson or Humphrey or Rockefeller, to agree to your terms take what you need, \u2018it\u2019s free because it\u2019s yours,&#8217;\u201d the letter begins, quoting American poet Diane Di Prima\u2019s <em>Revolutionary Letter #15<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The pamphlet, which was shared by groups including Palestine Action U.S. and the national Students for Justice in Palestine organization, was also supported by the encampment organizing coalition Columbia University Apartheid Divest, which commented on social media in approval.<\/p>\n<p>Current occupiers are feeding off the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russian-propaganda-claims-no-fighting-in-kyiv-major-ukrainian-cities\/\" title=\"Russian Propaganda Claims No Fighting in Kyiv, Major Ukrainian Cities\">anti-war movement<\/a> of the 1960s and 1970s, when, in April 1968, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/04\/25\/remembering-columbia-1968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>hundreds of students at Columbia also took over part of campus<\/a>, Hamilton Hall, and held three senior university officials, administrators William Kahn and Dan Carlinsky, as well as Dean Henry S. Coleman, hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Those protests spread to more buildings and lasted over a week until the New York City Police Department arrested more than 700 protesters. At the time, 132 students, four faculty members, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-staggering-number-of-police-officers-were-shot-this-week\/\" title=\"A Staggering Number of Police Officers Were Shot This Week\">12 police officers<\/a> were injured.<\/p>\n<p>The historical comparison to 1968 is embedded into the ether of today\u2019s pro-Palestinian occupiers. On the first day of the occupation, Columbia\u2019s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, as well as Columbia University Apartheid Divest, posted a picture comparing themselves to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russia-warns-of-negative-legal-consequences-as-mass-anti-war-protests-break-out\/\" title=\"Russia Warns of 'Negative Legal Consequences' as Mass Anti-War Protests Break Out\">anti-war protesters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C53FygbOs7y\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>The pamphlet walks through 14 \u201clessons \u2026 that might be useful today, now that university occupations have re-emerged as a tactic within the movement to halt the genocide in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The document first encourages disruption, saying that is the reason occupations are effective. In 1968, the document continues, Columbia was shut down for more than a week, forcing the school administration to \u201cconcede to their demands, even after the movement faced repression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar to 1968, the activists writing for <em>Ill Will<\/em> said the \u201coccupation needs to spread in order to survive,\u201d encouraging students to take over more buildings \u201con campus, throughout the city, and across the country\u201d and for activists to \u201ctake the enemy by surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOccupations draw strength from the specter of a riot,\u201d the pamphlet reads, including by seeking support from locals unaffiliated with Columbia.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe April 1968 occupations took place in the immediate aftermath of the \u2018Holy Week\u2019 of riots in the surrounding neighborhood and cities across the country after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,\u201d the document reads. \u201cCampus administrators, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dcs-hotel-harrington-closes-for-january-6-pro-trump-march-after-pressure-over-proud-boys\/\" title=\"DC\u2019s Hotel Harrington Closes for January 6 Pro-Trump March After Pressure Over Proud Boys\">city officials<\/a>, and the police department worried that any attempt to suppress the occupations might lead to unrest in the surrounding neighborhood; Harlem might invade Columbia. An occupation today will be in a stronger position if it is similarly able to build and mobilize support from the surrounding neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Making the point further, \u201cOutside agitators need to be welcomed in,\u201d the document reads, adding, \u201cFive hundred people marched on the gate at 116th St and Broadway. The NYPD stood down out of fear that violence might otherwise erupt.
