Companies fear overbidding on\u200d A-list talent, signaling\u2063 a cautious\u200d and financially tight environment\u2063 in Hollywood.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/entertainment\/\">  Entertainment <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/%20\"><span>Bryan Chai<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   April 25, 2024 at 1:03pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that Hollywood is in rough shape.<\/p>\n<p>Just look at the bloodbath that was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/year-flopbuster-2023s-10-biggest-box-office-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 box office<\/a>, and that becomes painfully clear for anyone who can do basic math.<\/p>\n<p>But even the mathematically challenged can understand this: People are demonstrably preferring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/audiences-crave-older-movies-theatrical-re-release-trend-gains-steam-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">older<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/another-dying-industry-gamers-spent-60-2023-play-time-games-older-half-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> to modern offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all that, there was some mild hope that the crippling worker strikes that rocked the industry in 2023 would ultimately pave the way for a resurgence in Hollywood. A starving industry that was dormant for about six months would surely be champing at the bit to get back to work, right?<\/p>\n<p>According to a blistering report from <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/04\/hollywood-contraction-star-tv-packages-1235880727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadline<\/a>, that hasn\u2019t been the case\u2026 at all.<\/p>\n<p>Despite that half-year inactivity, Deadline is reporting that demand for \u201cstar packages\u201d is uncomfortably subdued.<\/p>\n<p>(A \u201cpackage\u201d in Hollywood is typically a project started by an agency, that employs actors, directors and writers that the agency represents. A \u201cstar package\u201d is the same idea, except that there\u2019s an A-list actor attached to the project.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney is so tight everywhere,\u201d one agent told Deadline, describing the grim environment.<\/p>\n<p>That same agent added: \u201cThese are huge investments, massive packages, and a lot of them are not necessarily the best return on investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you still go the theater often?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Agencies are reportedly keeping track of these wayward and unwanted packages, and per Deadline, that figure now \u201cexceeds 20.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outlet also added that these unclaimed packages \u201cincluded Oscar and Emmy winners and nominees in front or behind the camera, stars of blockbuster movies and iconic TV series and, in a couple of instances, famous IP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of A-list talent left dangling in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been such a head-scratcher,\u201d a different and perhaps more perplexed agent told Deadline of the current landscape.<\/p>\n<p>One potential issue with those star packages is that the A-list talent comes with A-list pricing and bidding.<\/p>\n<p>A different representative told Deadline that \u201cthere is fear\u201d among executives about overbidding and spending unnecessary money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t want to be the first one to jump in and spend if they don\u2019t need to,\u201d that rep said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPackages used to come through, and it used to be Netflix will buy it or now it\u2019s Apple will buy it,\u201d one buyer told Deadline. \u201cBut we\u2019re seeing things go out that don\u2019t get any buyers, which is unusual.
