Democrats have also put forth legislation to\u200d enhance\u200b crime prevention, allowing easier police arrests and defining serial \u2063theft offenses.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>California<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/(opens%20in%20a%20new%20tab)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats<\/a> have introduced a slate of bills targeting shoplifting and drug-dealing to put on the ballot in November, hoping to address concerns surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/559058\/proposition-47-at-a-glance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Proposition 47<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A coalition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/retail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>retailers<\/a> has garnered enough signatures to bring before voters the choice to amend Proposition 47, which downgraded some crimes such as drug possession and thefts to misdemeanors from felonies back in 2014. <\/p>\n<p>In an effort to avoid revisiting Proposition 47, California Democrats have introduced other legislation showing their interest in curbing crime. Democratic Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas introduced legislation making it easier for police to make certain arrests and establish a \u201cserial\u201d theft offense, and Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire, also a Democrat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-again-introduce-legislation-for-universal-background-checks-on-gun-purchases-say-they-have-opportunity-to-act\/\" title=\"Democrats Again Introduce Legislation For Universal Background Checks On Gun Purchases, Say They Have \u2018Opportunity to Act\u2019\">introduced similar legislation<\/a>. Neither has expressed support for Proposition 47. <\/p>\n<p>Both San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/obamas-longest-serving-cabinet-member-confirmed-to-bidens-cabinet\/\" title=\"Obama\u2019s Longest-Serving Cabinet Member Confirmed To Biden\u2019s Cabinet\">introduced bills<\/a> may be able to help move efforts away from putting Proposition 47 on the ballot. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the legislature can come together on a meaningful bill and get it on the governor\u2019s desk sooner rather than later, that also could serve to give them some leverage,\u201d Dyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/california-playbook\/2024\/04\/25\/tough-on-crime-rethink-00154265?nname=california-playbook&#038;nid=00000150-384f-da43-aff2-bf7fd35a0000&#038;nrid=b184d69e-b2a2-4eb9-933e-7e669f36c25d&#038;nlid=641189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> <em>Politico<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Gloria said he will have to\u00a0\u201cwait and see\u201d if any of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-is-torch-and-pitchfork-mentality-run-amuck-guest-on-malzbergs-eat-the-press-discusses-the-cancel-culture-in-the-us-today\/\" title=\"\u201cThis is Torch and Pitchfork Mentality Run Amuck\u201d \u2013 Guest on Malzberg\u2019s \u201cEat the Press\u201d Discusses the Cancel Culture in the US Today\">proposed legislation<\/a> is sufficient and actually gets signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) before shifting support away from Proposition 47. Gloria emphasized they shouldn\u2019t have to wait until November to see policy changes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think every single one of us wants to see change on this issue,\u201d Gloria told <em>Politico<\/em>. \u201cAnd what I heard [this week] is a recognition from both houses and the executive branch that change has to come.
