Why final?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d director insists artists fade with age, and he doesn\u2019t want to leave behind an imperfect film legacy. It explains why Tarantino just scrapped what would have been his final feature, \u201cThe Movie Critic,\u201d and hustled back to the proverbial drawing board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s got to be just right, he argues. Except age isn\u2019t always indicative of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/triangle-of-sadness-drowns-in-a-sea-of-socialist-wishcasting\/\" title=\"\u201cTriangle of Sadness\u201d Drowns in a Sea of Socialist Wishcasting\">creative decline<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clint Eastwood is still going strong at 93, and while 2021\u2019s \u201cCry Macho\u201d proved anemic, he spent the last decade delivering bravura work like \u201cAmerican Sniper,\u201d \u201cSully,\u201d \u201cRichard Jewell\u201d and, to a lesser extent, \u201cThe Mule.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not shabby for an 80-something auteur who came of age as an action hero more than 50 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_728991\" style=\"width: 874px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-728991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Winkelmeyer\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin Scorsese, 81, just scooped up countless nominations for last year\u2019s \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon,\u201d including an Oscar nod for Best Picture. His work remains vital and captivating, hardly the results you\u2019d expect given Tarantino\u2019s age framing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Critics and audiences alike marveled over 2015\u2019s \u201cMad Max: Fury Road,\u201d directed by the ageless George Miller. The director, now 79, uncorked that sizzling action film on the cusp of his 70th birthday. Some regard the \u201cMad Max\u201d reboot as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmarkcinemas.com\/movie-news\/mad-max-fury-road-tops-empires-100-greatest-movies-of-the-century-poll#:~:text=News%20%7C%20Landmark%20Cinemas-,Mad%20Max%3A%20Fury%20Road%20tops%20Empire's%20100%20Greatest%20Movies%20of,Movies%20of%20the%20Century'%20poll.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">one of the best films of the 21st century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ridley Scott, 86, isn\u2019t slowing down either, witness his upcoming summer sequel \u201cGladiator 2.\u201d Results vary with recent Scott fare, but his 2015 film \u201cThe Martian\u201d remains a career highlight. He was in his mid-70s during the film\u2019s production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other aging auteurs are taking risks that would scary any film school student silly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Francis Ford Coppola returns from semi-retirement with \u201cMegalopolis,\u201d one of the most intriguing projects from any filmmaker in recent memory. The epic, a dream project for the 85-year-old director, has been described as \u201cbats***\u201d among other dubious phrases from early screenings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its commercial prospects are dim and the \u201cGodfather\u201d legend has yet to secure a distributor for the film. It could be the biggest swing of his or any legend\u2019s career.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_728993\" style=\"width: 874px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-728993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ANGELA WEISS\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meanwhile, Kevin Costner is pushing all his chips in for \u201cHorizon,\u201d a planned four-part western not based on any existing material or IP. The first two installments hit theaters later this year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 69-year-old has enjoyed an up-and-down career, most notably the latter with \u201cWaterworld.\u201d He still thinks he\u2019s got something vital left to say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tarantino\u2019s fears of age, though, aren\u2019t without merit. Coppola hasn\u2019t made a movie of consequence for three decades \u2013 1992\u2019s \u201cBram Stoker\u2019s Dracula\u201d is the last film that dented the zeitgeist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">George Lucas, 79, never recaptured the magic of his 1977 space epic \u201cStar Wars,\u201d a dramatic departure from his celebrated 1973 film \u201cAmerican Graffiti.\u201d He directed the saga\u2019s three prequels \u2013 all considered inferior to the original trilogy \u2013 and never followed through on plans to make smaller, more personal films.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He had enough money to fund them himself. Perhaps he had nothing left to say, cinematically speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The great Brian De Palma\u2019s decline also coincided with Father Time. For De Palma, 83, you have to go all the way back to 1996\u2019s \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d to recall a project with significant appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His last directorial effort, 2019\u2019s \u201cDomino,\u201d earned less than $1 million while generating brutal reviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It still might be better for Tarantino to break his pledge. Few will hold it against him, and chances are following the wonderful \u201cOnce Upon a Time \u2026 in Hollywood\u201d his creative tank isn\u2019t empty yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He could follow the unofficial Hughes Rule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Director John Hughes gave us some of the best movies of the \u201880s, including \u201cFerris Bueller\u2019s Day Off,\u201d \u201cThe Breakfast Club\u201d and \u201cPlanes, Trains and Automobiles.\u201d His knack for nailing the teen zeitgeist was unrivaled, but his workload diminished dramatically as he got older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By the time he died in 2009 at the age of 59, he hadn\u2019t directed a film since 1991\u2019s \u201cCurly Sue,\u201d one of his lesser efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hughes never announced his retirement, and he certainly could have leveraged his name to keep directing with inferior results. Instead, he either lost his passion or realized he no longer had the spark of his younger self.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He never opined on his quasi-retirement. He just \u2026 stopped.
