Tolkien, the realm of \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d video games holds a special place in this writer\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d stories hold up in modern times for a reason: They\u2019re timeless tales of grappling with greed, and evil versus good that will resonate today, tomorrow and untold eons from now.<\/p>\n<p>And there are epic battles, to boot.<\/p>\n<p>All that means the franchise will be ripe for video game adaptations for as long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/woman-90-pets-almost-named-lord-rings-characters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as fans<\/a> of the franchise exist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLord of the Rings\u201d has certainly had hiccups (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tolkien-turning-grave-elon-musk-gives-brief-blistering-review-amazons-new-lord-rings-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some bad ones<\/a>), but the video games have largely been well-regarded.<\/p>\n<p>They have, however, generally been of a remarkably similar flavor: They\u2019re mostly third-person action games.<\/p>\n<p>In the early aughts, video game adaptations of \u201cThe Two Towers\u201d and \u201cThe Return of the King\u201d were beloved versions of the films\u2019 most action-packed moments.<\/p>\n<p>They were a staple of my childhood as a popular activity for me and my friends after basketball.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to my adulthood, and the 2014 release of \u201cMiddle-earth: Shadow of Mordor\u201d and its 2017 sequel, \u201cMiddle-earth: Shadow of War,\u201d evoked similar childhood sensations of waging digital war in Tolkien\u2019s carefully crafted universe.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Have you read both \u201cThe Lord of the Ring\u201d books and watched the movies?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Both of those games were great, but both were also third-person action games.<\/p>\n<p>Now, when the franchise has explored outside of that genre, the results have been far more mixed.<\/p>\n<p>The 2023 third-person stealth game \u201cThe Lord of the Rings: Gollum,\u201d for example, is terrible. But the awful nature of the game has nothing to do with its swapping out action for stealth. It\u2019s just a poorly made, rushed cash-in on a beloved IP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGollum\u201d is also the last major \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d video game to hit the market. It ultimately left such a bad taste in everyone\u2019s mouths that nobody was sure how \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d video games would continue.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that question was answered on Monday when the world got its first good glimpse of \u201cTales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Video Game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unwieldy title aside, the game is a stark departure from both \u201cGollum\u201d and the ghosts of \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d past for very apparent reasons.<\/p>\n<p>See if you can spot it yourself:<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tales of the Shire - Official Announcement Trailer - PEGI\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8VA0uGtHqQI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it looks like your player character in \u201cTales of the Shire\u201d will be swapping in the typical broadsword for a shovel and hoe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTales of the Shire\u201d will trade in epic battles for peaceful community-building, as your Hobbit character works to build out a local shire so it can become an official village in Hobbiton.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no existential evil to battle and no all-conquering ring to throw into a volcano here \u2014 at least based on the trailer.<\/p>\n<p>Just simple farming, bartering and building out your community a la \u201cThe Sims\u201d or \u201cAnimal Crossing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s certainly a risky choice for developer W\u0113t\u0101 Workshop and publisher Private Division, an offshoot of industry conglomerate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/video-game-titan-grows-even-larger-460-million-acquisition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Take-Two Interactive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Video Game\u201d is slated to come out later this year and will be available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.<\/p>\n<div id=\"author-info-44778\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<div>\n<p><label for=\"summary-tab-radio-44778\">Summary<\/label><label for=\"more-info-tab-radio-44778\">More<span> Biographical Information<\/span><\/label><label for=\"posts-tab-radio-44778\">Recent<span> Posts<\/span><\/label><label for=\"contact-tab-radio-44778\" onclick=\"if( typeof grecaptcha=='undefined' ) { let cap_s=document.createElement( 'script' ); cap_s.src='https:\/\/www.google.com\/recaptcha\/api.js?render=6LeJFcsUAAAAAPsIEqvB1EebWbZfqRUe6ebMpGy7'; document.body.appendChild( cap_s ); }\">Contact<\/label><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bryan Chai has written news and sports for The Western Journal for more than five years and has produced more than 1,300 stories.
