Southwest \u200bAirlines, under CEO Bob \u200bJordan&#8217;s leadership, is reducing its staff by 2,000 employees\u200b and\u2064 discontinuing services at four airports\u200d following a \u200dsubstantial first-quarter loss.\u2062 Despite challenges, the\u2064 company is focusing on adaptation and growth, implementing job \u200ccuts and operational changes to mitigate\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texans-cant-lose-power-for-nonpayment-orders-utilities-commission\/\" title=\"Texans Can\u2019t Lose Power For Nonpayment, Orders Utilities Commission\">financial impacts<\/a> and ensure flight reliability.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/%20\"><span>Johnathan Jones<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   April 25, 2024 at 12:11pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Southwest Airlines announced Thursday it will reduce its workforce by 2,000 employees and cut service to four airports after posting a major loss to begin the year.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Bob Jordan said in an early morning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwestairlinesinvestorrelations.com\/news-and-events\/news-releases\/2024\/04-25-2024-114535295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> on the company\u2019s first-quarter results that it would adapt and seek growth to end the year and that the changes announced were necessary to achieve that goal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/faa-investigating-southwest-pilot-given-instructions-nearly-caused-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southwest<\/a> lost $231 million \u2014 or 39 cents per diluted share \u2014 from January to March, the release said. That is compared with a loss of $159 million \u2014 or 27 cents per share \u2014 loss for the same period in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it is disappointing to incur a first quarter loss, we exited the quarter with healthy profits and margins in the month of March,\u201d Jordan said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/southwest-airlines-unique-plus-size-passenger-policy-causing-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southwest<\/a> shares had <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/LUV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped<\/a> about 8 percent by early Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan said the company projects growth of 8 to 9 percent during the second quarter and 4 percent for the year.<\/p>\n<p>But to stop the hemorrhaging, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/missed-opportunity-jfk-author-reveals-chilling-incident-year-dallas-changed-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dallas<\/a>-based company said it will end its service at four airports.<\/p>\n<p>Two of them \u2014 George Bush Intercontinental in Houston and Cozumel International Airport in Mexico \u2014 are major hubs for tourists.<\/p>\n<p>The other two airports for which Southwest will cease operations are Bellingham International Airport in Washington state and Syracuse Hancock International Airport in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/off-duty-vermont-officer-shot-10-times-police-upstate-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the release, higher labor costs were largely responsible for a 5 percent quarterly increase in the airline\u2019s operating expenses per available seat mile, excluding fuel and oil expenses, special items and profit-sharing.<\/p>\n<p>In total, an estimated 2,000 Southwest jobs will be cut, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan blamed much of the losses on Boeing\u2019s ongoing production and safety issues, which have had the aircraft manufacturer under the microscope all year.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO said he expects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ignored-told-not-create-delays-frankly-shut-boeing-whistleblowers-shocking-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boeing\u2019s<\/a> issues to affect his company\u2019s growth throughout this year and into next year.<\/p>\n<p>The airline operates a fleet made up exclusively of Boing 737s, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/04\/25\/southwest-airlines-luv-earnings-q1-2024.html#:~:text=Southwest%20said%20it%20expects%20to,and%20Houston's%20George%20Bush%20Intercontinental.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Southwest had expected to receive 46 of the company\u2019s 737 Max 8 jets to bolster its fleet this year.<\/p>\n<p>It now plans to acquire only 20 of the jets.<\/p>\n<p>Without the replacements, the company said it would hold off on taking some of its older aircraft out of service.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday\u2019s earnings report, Jordan stated his commitment to ensuring Southwest remains a good investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAchieving our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/7-tips-to-boost-financial-wellness-no-matter-what-your-financial-situation\/\" title=\"7 Tips to Boost Financial Wellness, No Matter What Your Financial Situation\">financial goals<\/a> is an immediate imperative,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are reacting and replanning quickly to mitigate the operational and financial impacts while maintaining dependable and reliable flight schedules for our Customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>An Important Message from Our Staff:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>In just a few months, the world is going to change forever.
