Perry. Despite evidence of academic \u200bmisconduct, the university has not taken action. Academics express shock\u2062 at the\u2064 extent of plagiarism, questioning UCLA&#8217;s response. Concerns are\u2064 raised about the\u2062 integrity\u200c of academic institutions and\u2062 the response\u200b to such unethical behavior. The plagiarism scandal at the UCLA School \u200cof Medicine \u200cinvolves \u200cNatalie J. Perry, a DEI official. Despite clear evidence of academic misconduct, UCLA has not acted. Academics\u200d are alarmed by the widespread \u200dplagiarism and criticize UCLA&#8217;s lack of response. This raises concerns about academic integrity and the handling of unethical \u2063conduct within institutions.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academics whose work was stolen by a top diversity, equity, and inclusion official at the UCLA School of Medicine say the scale of plagiarism is both \u201cunheard of\u201d and \u201cunbelievable,\u201d raising questions about how the California university\u2019s failure to take action. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dei-official-at-ucla-school-of-medicine-massively-plagiarized-her-dissertation-on-dei\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">investigation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  by The Daily Wire and City Journal found that Natalie J. Perry, who leads a DEI program at the medical school and is tasked with shaping the school\u2019s \u201cculture,\u201d had stolen thousands of words without attribution for a doctoral thesis on the benefits of DEI. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On April 12, The Daily Wire and City Journal provided the UCLA School of Medicine with a 14-page document containing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dei-official-at-ucla-school-of-medicine-massively-plagiarized-her-dissertation-on-dei\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">overwhelming evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of academic malfeasance. The school has not responded and there is no indication that it has taken any action, with Perry still<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.ucla.edu\/people\/natalie-j-perry-phd\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">listed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  on its website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perry stole extensively from at least 10 different papers, at least four of whose authors she never even mentioned. The Daily Wire and City Journal shared passages she stole from each author with those victims, and asked what should be done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Angelo Kinicki, an Arizona State University business school professor from whom Perry stole 1,000 continuous words, said that the findings, and the subsequent reaction, raise concerns about the institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat\u2019s unheard of. It\u2019s unbelievable,\u201d he said after viewing evidence that pages 32 to 35 of Perry\u2019s dissertation are virtually identical to a paper by Kinicki and two other authors, Chad Hartnell and Amy Ou. \u201cWho would copy that many things, does this person have any original thoughts?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf she\u2019s supposed to be the carrier of the culture and she steals people\u2019s work, what does that tell you? What kind of culture are we creating here? And then for the institution to not want to respond? That\u2019s the wrong kind of culture,\u201d Kinicki said, adding that universities lose all value if their degrees and hiring processes do not amount to an assurance that the person is qualified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The University of Virginia, which granted Perry a doctorate in education based on the plagiarized dissertation and famously has a strict \u201chonor code\u201d shaped by the ideas of founder Thomas Jefferson, said it would investigate the claims after it was sent the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kentucky-police-officer-fired-for-giving-black-lives-matter-protest-leader-info-on-cops\/\" title=\"Kentucky Police Officer Fired For Giving Black Lives Matter Protest Leader Info On Cops\">information shared<\/a> with UCLA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are initiating an investigation according to our process,\u201d said university spokesman Brian Coy, who added that \u201cthe University does have the ability to revoke degrees in cases where plagiarism or other qualifying forms of misconduct are identified and proven.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though the university\u2019s Honor Committee said it is only able to accept reports on alleged violations within two years of when they occurred \u2014\u00a0Perry\u2019s paper was published in 2014 \u2014 Research Integrity Officer David J. Hudson said he would examine the claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen they hire this person, they\u2019re trusting the pedigree of UVA. UVA cheated them by not enforcing standards. And then students trust that the person is qualified because they\u2019re at UCLA, but they\u2019re cheating the students,\u201d Kinicki said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I was sitting on a tribunal I\u2019d say revoke her PhD,\u201d he said. \u201cIt degrades other degrees. If UCLA doesn\u2019t, that\u2019s an abdication of their responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perry also stole from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.msu.edu\/directory\/schmitt-neal.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Neal Schmitt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a professor of organizational psychology at Michigan State University who is an expert on \u201cpersonnel and selection and academic admissions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt appears to be plagiarism to me,\u201d he told The Daily Wire after reviewing a side-by-side of his paper and hers, though not the other examples. \u201cIf it is plagiarism, I do not believe the person should continue to hold an administrative role at UCLA.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of the academics she stole from were left-wing ideologues writing about race, and have declined to publicly call out Perry, raising questions about whether it is acceptable in their field. Kinicki, the organizational culture expert, said that speaks volumes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf those people who are victims won\u2019t speak up or say something, they\u2019re contributing to it, they\u2019re condoning it,\u201d Kinicki said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perry stole four paragraphs from racial scholar Rub\u00e9n Martinez, for example, but Martinez declined to comment on the findings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBest approach is to bring it to the attention of her supervisor (is it a Dean?), and that person can then contact us,\u201d Martinez said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His co-author on the paper, Adalberto Aguirre Jr., is the editor of the journal Radical Pedagogy and a professor at the University of California Riverside. Aguirre Jr. said he would respond in the next few days, but failed to follow through. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among the other victims who have stayed silent is <a href=\"https:\/\/seis.ucla.edu\/faculty-and-research\/faculty-directory\/sylvia-hurtado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sylvia Hurtado<\/a>, a professor at Perry\u2019s own institution of UCLA. Just like Perry, her credentials are nominally in the field of education, but in reality, she writes about race.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barron Sawyer, who manages UCLA\u2019s Alumni Association, said he wrote to Perry asking for an explanation, but received no response. He told The Daily Wire that the failure of other academics to speak up is \u201cdisheartening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs the founder of a UCLA alumni network and a proud alumnus, I find the lack of action disheartening, especially as it involves a faculty member, Professor Sylvia Hurtado, who is herself a victim,\u201d Sawyer said. \u201cI urge the university to take immediate, transparent steps to investigate and address these claims to restore and uphold the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stefanik-accuses-judge-in-trump-civil-fraud-case-of-weaponized-lawfare-in-ethics-complaint\/\" title=\"Stefanik claims judge in Trump fraud case used 'weaponized lawfare' in ethics complaint.\">high ethical standards expected<\/a> at UCLA.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aside from Perry\u2019s plagiarism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/who-is-bill-ackman-the-hedge-fund-billionaire-who-has-mit-and-business-insider-in-his-sights\/\" title=\"Bill Ackman: The billionaire hedge fund titan targeting MIT and Business Insider\">high-profile academics<\/a> have raised concerns about the competence of the people behind UCLA\u2019s DEI programs, which have dangerously veered the school away from scientific rigor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the school required all first<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/low-risk-medical-school-students-are-being-forced-to-get-the-covid-booster\/\" title=\"Medical school students must receive the Covid booster, despite being at low risk.\">-year medical students<\/a> to read an essay that stated concern about obesity is \u201cviolence on\u2026 Black, disabled, trans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pedagogical-malpractice-inside-ucla-medical-schools-mandatory-health-equity-class\/\" title=\"Exploring UCLA Medical School's Required 'Health Equity' Course\">poor fat people<\/a>,\u201d Jeffrey Flier, the former dean of Harvard Medical School, said that the course was promoting \u201cdangerous misinformation\u201d and that the medical school had substituted \u201cMarxist ideology\u201d for medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flier<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/pedagogical-malpractice-inside-ucla-medical-schools-mandatory-health-equity-class\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  that anyone involved in approving the course was unqualified for medicine, and that the school\u2019s dean, Steven Dubinett, should \u201cchange its leadership\u201d to remove anyone who supported it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sawyer, of the alumni association, added that the administration should remember its commitment to the principles espoused by legendary basketball coach John Wooden: \u201c\u2018Be more concerned with your character than your reputation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Theft of academic work by a UCLA official shocks experts.
