How much time does it buy? To what degree will it assist Ukraine in keeping Russia at bay? <\/p>\n<p>Marc Santora, a New York Times reporter based in Kyiv, did a decent job admitting this little problem on Wednesday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/24\/podcasts\/the-daily\/is-60-billion-enough-to-save-ukraine.html\">episode<\/a> of \u201cThe Daily\u201d podcast: \u201cWhat this package doesn\u2019t do,\u201d he said, \u201cis tell us the path forward for how Ukraine can achieve what they really want, their ultimate goal, which is driving the Russians from their land and securing the kind of victory that is both lasting and just in their minds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of just a few weeks ago, the U.S. had dedicated nearly $115 billion to Ukraine. Now, following Speaker Mike Johnson\u2019s little chat with Biden White House officials (plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2024\/04\/23\/mike-johnson-ukraine-shift-00153825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a traitorous nudge<\/a> from Donald Trump), that number has ballooned to around $175 billion \u2014\u00a0and counting! That\u2019s nothing to say of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2023\/03\/23\/updated-ukraine-recovery-and-reconstruction-needs-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/buttigieg-infrastructure-bill-wont-wrap-by-memorial-day\/\" title=\"Buttigieg: Infrastructure Bill Won't Wrap by Memorial Day\">half-trillion dollars<\/a><\/a> it\u2019s currently estimated to rebuild the country once this is all over, a number that just as surely climbs by the second.<\/p>\n<p>To make things a little more interesting, Ukraine is quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ukraine-faces-an-acute-manpower-shortage-with-young-men-dodging-the-draft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">running out of men<\/a> to fight its war. President Volodymyr Zelensky lowered the forced military service age from 27 to 25. More than half a million fighting-age men have fled the country since the start of the conflict, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/ukrainian\/articles\/cd1px4z922wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> the BBC. That\u2019s the same number of troops who are actively engaged in battle. In other words, Ukraine\u2019s native armed force is half of what it should be. Meanwhile, Russia\u2019s force is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russia-increases-maximum-size-armed-forces-by-170000-servicemen-2023-12-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than double<\/a> the size of Ukraine\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Someone should ask the Washington Post\u2019s Marc Thiessen, a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eScarry\/status\/1781013872121376784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hype-man<\/a> for all the riches that Ukraine\u2019s war is bringing to U.S. defense contractors, what good $60 billion in equipment and ammunition is if there aren\u2019t any men to use it. (Then again, I guess the obvious answer is \u201call the riches that Ukraine\u2019s war is bringing to U.S. defense contractors.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Predictable as ever, the stage is already being set for yet another round of Ukraine funding. \u201cDespite the time and political capital spent on the $60 billion aid for Ukraine,\u201d read a report in Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/24\/biden-ukraine-russia-war-aid-00154143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this week<\/a>, \u201csome Biden administration officials are skeptical it\u2019s enough for Ukraine to win its two<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-already-struggling-on-international-stage-as-expert-warns-he-may-be-making-middle-east-war-worse\/\" title=\"Biden Already Struggling On International Stage As Expert Warns He May Be Making Middle East War Worse\">-year war<\/a> with Russia.\u201d The Washington Post\u2019s Josh Rogin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/04\/25\/moldova-russian-politics-ukraine-invasion-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> Thursday that \u201cwithout more Western help\u201d for Ukraine \u2014 yes, <em>more <\/em>than what was just done \u2014 the country of Moldova is also under threat of a Russian takeover. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/24\/world\/europe\/ukraine-aid-senate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> in the New York Times said \u201cUkrainian officials seem skeptical that enough weapons will be delivered quickly or consistently over the coming months to keep up the momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a safe $60 billion bet that this won\u2019t be the last time that Washington, Republicans, and Democrats both, will dip into American taxpayer pockets on behalf of Ukraine.
