Explain what debanking is \u2014 financial institutions canceling a customer over his politics \u2014 and most will think you\u2019re paranoid.<\/p>\n<p>Yet from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/texas-spurs-copycats-as-states-punish-banks-that-snub-oil-and-gas-1.1728116\">oil and gas service firms in Texas<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/fox-news-politics\/republican-ags-demand-wells-fargo-answer-for-abruptly-closing-gun-dealers-account-other-woke-policies\">companies selling firearms<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/commentary\/canadas-plow-through-financial-freedom-stopped-convoy\">Freedom Convoy of Canadian truckers<\/a>, debanking is a real and growing problem. Especially as corporate leadership skews left and attempts to move their business beyond simply making a profit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1027337651\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-23c5ba6a35ab1a0a6b36969a03acfdf5 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-23c5ba6a35ab1a0a6b36969a03acfdf5\"><\/div>\n<p>Now John Eastman, one of the attorneys who worked with former President Donald Trump, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/04\/16\/john-eastman-donald-trump-attorney-debanked-bank-of-america-usaa\/\">debanked by both Bank of America and USAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That USAA debanking Eastman for his ties to the 2020 election contest comes as a surprise. USAA \u2014 now an insurance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/baseball-great-curt-schilling-says-aig-canceled-his-insurance-over-his-conservative-beliefs-same-company-that-got-a-182-billion-bailout-from-us-taxpayers\/\" title=\"Baseball Great Curt Schilling Says AIG Canceled His Insurance Over his Conservative Beliefs \u2014 Same Company that Got a 2 Billion Bailout from US Taxpayers\">financial services<\/a>, and banking powerhouse headquartered in San Antonio, Texas \u2014 got its start in 1922 as a mutual self-insurance company for Army officers. Its clientele is mostly service members, veterans, and their families, with membership limited to those who can show a military tie. That means that, per a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2019\/07\/10\/trump-draws-stronger-support-from-veterans-than-from-the-public-on-leadership-of-u-s-military\/\">Pew Research<\/a> poll, its customers are center-right, with 59 percent of veterans identifying as Republican versus only 39 percent of veterans who are Democrats. In other words, USAA\u2019s customers voted overwhelmingly for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, as USAA grew larger, some customers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/watchdog\/2019\/11\/29\/why-does-texas-based-usaa-have-an-f-rating-from-the-bbb-and-why-doesnt-the-company-seem-to-care\/\">complained<\/a> of a decline in quality as USAA increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.com\/2023\/11\/20\/class-action-suit-alleges-usaa-insurance-arbitrarily-reduced-denied-claims-through-third-partys-automated-system\/?darkschemeovr=1\">contracted out key services<\/a>, such as adjustment claims. USAA also drifted from its military heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Today, USAA is like that empty husk of a human worn like a skin suit by that giant extraterrestrial insect in \u201cMen in Black.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4d5589f7e9cf370dc37601edd6e208f0 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4d5589f7e9cf370dc37601edd6e208f0\"><\/div>\n<p>Of the 10 men and one woman listed on USAA\u2019s executive council, none mentions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/repulsive-illinois-nevertrumper-adam-kinzinger-continues-to-attack-president-trump-while-claiming-his-military-service-allows-him-to-act-as-insubordinate\/\" title=\"Repulsive Illinois #NeverTrumper Adam Kinzinger Continues to Attack President Trump While Claiming His Military Service Allows Him To Act as Insubordinate\">military service<\/a> on his or her LinkedIn profile. Given that about <a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table\/ACSST1Y2022.S2101?q=Veterans&#038;y=2022\">10 percent<\/a> of American men ages 35-64 are veterans, one would expect to see at least one veteran on the senior management team of a firm that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaa.com\/membership\/about\/?wa_ref=pub_global_membership\">claims<\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019re run by members, for members. And we\u2019re committed to serving the military and their families,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaa.com\/about\/?wa_ref=pub_footer_about\">USAA was founded on military values<\/a>.\u201d Instead, we see people who, unless their parents served in the U.S. military, do not personally qualify for USAA insurance due to a lack of a link to military service.<\/p>\n<p>This lack of direct knowledge of the military has clearly led to a disconnection from military culture, which, in America, leans decidedly to the right.<\/p>\n<p>This brings us back to the curious case of USAA debanking John Eastman without giving any reason.<\/p>\n<p>Curious about USAA and what might have led to its decision as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/silicon-valley-bank-shut-down-by-regulators-in-most-notable-failure-since-2008-crisis\/\" title=\"Silicon Valley Bank shut down by regulators in most notable failure since 2008 crisis\">federally insured bank<\/a> to debank an innocent American citizen, I consulted the 1792 Exchange\u2019s database on corporations. The 1792 Exchange has assessed nearly 3,000 firms, looking at policies and practices that might predict the likelihood that a company \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/1792exchange.com\/spotlight-reports\/corporate-bias-ratings\/\">will cancel a contract or client, or boycott, divest, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/snls-trump-de-banking-gaff-accidentally-elevates-hot-button-issue\/\" title=\"SNL's Trump 'De-Banking' blunder boosts controversial topic\">deny services based<\/a> on viewpoints or beliefs.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d46ee5efe6db6e55246f763a83f977aa fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d46ee5efe6db6e55246f763a83f977aa\"><\/div>\n<p>I thought of the 1792 Exchange because, just a few weeks earlier, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaspolicy.com\/multimedia\/article\/energy-politics-economics-how-the-war-over-esg-investing-will-impact-2024-beyond\">moderated a panel on ESG<\/a> (environmental, social, and corporate governance) investing featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/1792exchange.com\/about\/#leadership\">Daniel Cameron<\/a>, the former attorney general of Kentucky who serves as 1792\u2019s CEO, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where things get interesting. Of 22 banks and insurance companies headquartered in Texas and <a href=\"https:\/\/1792exchange.com\/spotlight-reports\/corporate-bias-ratings\/?rel-ind=50\">rated<\/a> by the 1792 Exchange, 19 are assessed as having a lower risk of canceling a contract or client due to viewpoint discrimination. One firm was rated as having medium risk. And USAA was one of only two firms that were assessed as a high risk.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, in California, 1792 Exchange rated 20 firms in the same banking and insurance space, with 10 companies rated as having lower risk, four at medium risk, and six as having high risk. So half of the firms domiciled in California present a degree of risk due to viewpoint discrimination compared to only 13 percent in Texas. Of course, this makes sense when you compare California\u2019s hyper-left political environment to that of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>When I asked Cameron about these numbers, he said, \u201cThese numbers aren\u2019t surprising given the leftward tilt of corporate boardrooms. The cancellation of conservatives is just the tip of the iceberg. All Americans should be concerned about it, and the reality is that this type of activism is infecting the financial decisions at banks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 1792 Exchange recently updated its summary analysis for USAA, now noting:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>In 2023, USAA debanked former Trump attorney John Eastman, citing its right to close an account \u201cfor any reason without advance notice.\u201d Eastman asked about the closures, however, the bank stated that it was their policy not to disclose any further information. USAA scored a 100 on the 2023 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a political stakeholder group. \u2026 The company provides a benefits package for employees which covers transgender medical procedures for covered employees and dependents, including children. It also uses sex and gender ideology criteria in employee recruitment, vendor selection, marketing, and philanthropic support. USAA forces employees to undergo multiple ideological trainings and uses its reputation, corporate funds, and political influence to support controversial sex and gender ideologies, organizations, and legislation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Regarding USAA\u2019s rating, Cameron also added, \u201cAs you can see, USAA\u2019s rating shows how deeply political activism has seeped into the culture of the insurance company. There are few parts of its business not embracing left-wing ideology. I suspect that most of USAA\u2019s members would find alarming its alignment with a progressive agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, one might argue that USAA is following President Joe Biden\u2019s Defense Department <a href=\"https:\/\/imprimis.hillsdale.edu\/the-rise-of-wokeness-in-the-military\/\">practice<\/a> with its mandatory Maoist struggle sessions, gender ideology, and pronoun police. Perhaps the same climate of cultural Marxism is responsible for USAA\u2019s rapid customer service degradation.<\/p>\n<p>I contacted USAA for comment Friday afternoon, but by Monday evening, they had not responded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Glenn_Hegar\/status\/1782416977329352826\"><\/a>USAA isn\u2019t foolish, though; it makes sure the home front is adequately provisioned insofar as its political giving is concerned. Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/donor-lookup\/results?name=usaa&#038;cycle=2024&#038;state=&#038;zip=&#038;employ=&#038;occupation=&#038;jurisdiction=&#038;cand=&#038;type=\">OpenSecrets.org<\/a>, it gives handsomely to Republicans in Texas, its home state. So far in the 2024 election cycle, USAA has donated $121,500 to Texas Republicans and $36,000 to Texas Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>For the rest of the nation, the divide is even: $118,750 for Republicans and $118,650 for Democrats. In the prior political cycle, USAA similarly gave far more to Republicans than Democrats in Texas, but in the other 49 states, their giving tilted to Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Such a divergence between corporate policy and giving can be expected, however, as the people deciding whom to give money to are mostly influenced by which lawmakers are able to help or hurt a firm\u2019s particular corporate interests.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, it\u2019s remarkable that one of the many Texas Republicans USAA contributed to was quick to denounce USAA\u2019s Eastman debanking. Glenn Hegar, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, posted on X that \u201cUSAA members deserve better from a company that once embraced its members as heroes but now apparently views them as extremists.
