Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona voted in favor.<\/p>\n<p>In the vote against, 17 Democrats, 18 Republicans and independent Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-bernie-sanders-gets-yelling-match-fox-reporter-puts-hand-face-tense-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> of Vermont voted against the bill. Six senators didn\u2019t cast a vote.<\/p>\n<p>The bipartisan effort both for and against re-enacting the FISA section arises from the intense debate surrounding the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Section 702 allows American intelligence agencies to spy on foreign nationals, something that many politicians argue is essential for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/we-got-it-newsmax-reporter-emerald-robinson-national-security-source-confirms-a-piece-of-hardware-has-been-secured-in-germany\/\" title=\"We Got It! - Newsmax Reporter Emerald Robinson: National Security Source Confirms \"A Piece of Hardware Has Been Secured\" in Germany\">national security<\/a>. But it has also been used to target Americans. One notable instance, the Daily Caller reported, was during Donald Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign, when the FBI, acting on information from the now-discredited Steele Dossier, used it to get warrants to monitor communications by Trump\u2019s associates.<\/p>\n<p>As Utah Republican Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mitt-romney-roasted-calling-ukraine-aid-bill-important-vote-will-ever-take-us-senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mitt Romney<\/a> said in a statement explaining why he voted in support of the bill, he \u201cbelieve[s] we have a responsibility to use all lawful tools at our disposal to keep the American people safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My statement regarding the reauthorization of FISA Section 702: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3AxyLCRbOs\">pic.twitter.com\/3AxyLCRbOs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Mitt Romney (@SenatorRomney) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorRomney\/status\/1781544662693449936?\">April 20, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>  However, while Romney was quick to call it \u201clawful,\u201d there\u2019s much discussion about the legality of Section 702.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you believe Section 702 of FISA is unconstitutional?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While it centers around foreign nationals, FISA as a whole can apply to American citizens.<\/p>\n<p>As Texas Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-slashes-names-vp-shortlist-likes-ramaswamy-mccarthy-cruz-key-administration-roles-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ted Cruz<\/a> explained in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruz.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sen-cruz-statement-on-fisa-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, he \u201cvoted against this FISA reauthorization bill because it failed to include the most important requirement to protect Americans\u2019 civil rights: that law enforcement get a warrant before targeting a U.S. citizen.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I voted against this FISA reauthorization bill because it failed to include the most important requirement to protect Americans\u2019 civil rights: that law enforcement get a warrant before targeting a U.S. citizen. Read my full statement here: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b5QElt7b8H\">https:\/\/t.co\/b5QElt7b8H<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenTedCruz\/status\/1781538809038999943?\">April 20, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>An amendment was put forward in the Senate and voted on to require a warrant for American citizens under FISA, but ultimately failed in a 50-42 vote.<\/p>\n<p>A similar amendment was attempted in the House, also failing in a 212-212 tied vote.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s odd that the politicians \u2014 especially Republicans \u2014 fail to see how obviously FISA violates Americans\u2019 Fourth Amendment right to be protected against unreasonable searches and seizures.<\/p>\n<p>Bills like it continue to reduce and restrict the privacy and rights granted to Americans by the Constitution, all aided by uniparty politicians who work to empower the government beyond reason.<\/p>\n<p>While the passage of the bill is undoubtedly a defeat for the American people, there is something interesting to note as we witness both conservatives and progressives unite in voting against this bill.<\/p>\n<p>When both Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz agree on a bill \u2014 two people who are essentially on opposite sides of the American political spectrum \u2014 it goes to show there\u2019s always some common ground, even between those who seem so different.<\/p>\n<p>So while its passage is disappointing, the vote breakdown is an indicator that if more Democrats and Republicans worked together to actually fight for our rights, things could change.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
