audiences ever since 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/google-employees-demand-psychological-safety-after-layoffs\/\" title=\"Google Employees Demand \"Psychological Safety\" After Layoffs\">seemingly endless supply<\/a> of poorly-received big-budget blockbusters isn\u2019t helping any \u2014 the 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/9-box-office-duds-that-became-cult-classics\/\" title=\"9 Box Office Duds That Became Cult Classics\">box office<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/year-flopbuster-2023s-10-biggest-box-office-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suffered numerous financial failures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One growing trend utilized by an increasing number of theaters, however, seems to finally be getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-mayor-blasted-for-mindful-breathing-school-mandate-amid-low-academic-scores-absenteeism\/\" title=\"NYC Mayor Criticized for 'Mindful Breathing' School Rule Amid Poor Academic Performance, Absenteeism\">butts back<\/a> in seats: Re-releasing classic movies.<\/p>\n<p>Last week (from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/weekly\/2024W15\/?ref_=bo_wly_table_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 12 to April 18<\/a>), the eighth highest-grossing film in the U.S. was \u201cShrek 2,\u201d an animated feature that first debuted 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s re-release, which Universal Pictures greenlit in honor of the film\u2019s 20th anniversary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/shrek-2-re-release-embarrasses-disney-performs-better-new-animated-films\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raked in more at the box office<\/a> than several Disney films brought in in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps even more impressively, on Monday, another 2004 film, Sam Raimi\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man 2\u201d starring Tobey Maguire, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/date\/2024-04-22\/?ref_=bo_di_table_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/spider-man-no-way-home-reaches-top-10-all-time-highest-earning-films\/\" title=\"\u2018Spider-Man: No Way Home\u2019 Reaches Top 10 All Time Highest Earning Films\">highest-grossing movie<\/a><\/a> at the U.S. box office.<\/p>\n<p>A week prior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/date\/2024-04-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on April 15<\/a>, the re-release of the first Raimi-directed \u201cSpider-Man\u201d movie from 2002 managed to snag the third place box office spot.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/all-8-spider-man-movie-returning-to-theaters-starting-next-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IGN<\/a>, Sony Pictures is re-releasing each of the eight \u201cSpider-Man\u201d films in theaters over the course of eight weeks in an event that\u2019s being dubbed \u201cSpider-Mondays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This re-release trend isn\u2019t only happening in the U.S.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Would you go to the theater to watch a classic?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the U.K., the re-release of the 1989 dark comedy \u201cHeathers\u201d brought in \u00a3110,000 (roughly $137,000 in the U.S.) at the U.K. box office just four years ago, per Screen Daily.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, U.K. theaters have been pushing a growing number of re-releases.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Davis, the CEO of film distributor Park Circus the current theatrical state of affairs is \u201ca definite boom time\u201d for re-releasing popular classics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a company and a classics market, we think it\u2019s an all-time high,\u201d Davis told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/features\/why-its-boom-time-for-theatrical-re-releases-of-classic-films\/5190801.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Screen Daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David explained: \u201cThat\u2019s partly because during Covid, exhibitors \u2013 while they were still able to operate \u2013 had a dearth of product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThey experimented with classic products and, in almost all cases, it worked and they wanted to stick with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Davis, the re-release strategy doesn\u2019t just work for bringing in older audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Newer \u201cmodern\u201d audiences seem to be returning to the theater for classic films as well.<\/p>\n<p>This trend seems to be popping up a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mythical-modern-audience-2023-reports-streaming-gaming-comics-prove-modern-audience-doesnt-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cross all entertainment mediums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Streaming audiences are watching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fans-actively-rejecting-modern-tv-turning-classics-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">older shows more than newer ones<\/a> and gamers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/another-dying-industry-gamers-spent-60-2023-play-time-games-older-half-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">playing older games more than newer releases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most telling, in both cases \u2014 on a year-by-year basis \u2014 audiences seem to be consuming
